bama_bassin Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Ok guys, I am obviously behing the crowd here. I need some advice on what size mustad KVD trebles to put on these lures. I have heard many people comment that these hooks are much better than the stock hooks. I just need to know what sizes to buy. thanks for your help in advance. J Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I personally wouldn't change the stock hooks unless they need it. Those baits come with quality hooks as far as I'm concerned. I also like that the sizes are already upsized from the factory too. Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Also should state that I haven't used these yet. I'm just basing this off the hooks on the ones I just picked up last week. They look nice and strong-upsized, and sticky sharp Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 20, 2012 Super User Posted February 20, 2012 Check out the Home Page. That's me in the upper right with a nice green fish caught on the 3.5 (purple back/yellow belly). Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 20, 2012 Super User Posted February 20, 2012 Right from the horses mouth ~ A-Jay VanDam: I prefer to use the 7-foot Quantum Tour KVD rod with the 1.5 and the 2.5. This rod gives me a lot of control, and it’s extremely accurate. It’s short enough that if I’m casting up close, I can make a really-accurate cast with it. Yet the rod is long enough that if I want to make a really-long cast, I can, and it has enough power that I can hoist a big bass out of really-thick cover with it. When I’m fishing the 1.5 and the 2.5, I use the Quantum Tour KVD 5.3:1 gear-ratio reel. This reel has a slightly-larger spool than most reels, and it’s not a slow reel or a super-fast reel. This reel gives me really-good control. I’ll use the extra-strong Mustad KVD Elite Series Triple Grip Treble hooks. I put No. 2 hooks on the 1.5. But I’ll use a No. 1 or a No. 1/0 treble hook on the 2.5, because these treble hooks are extra-short shanked, so they don’t get hung-up, and they’re really strong and sharp. Even when you’re grinding gravel or rocks with these ultra-point treble hooks, the hooks don’t get dull. I tie a Palomar knot, because it’s quick and easy and gives me almost 100% strength with the Bass Pro Shops XPS Fluorocarbon line. Quote

bama_bassin Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Another question. I have a revo winch and I plan on pairing it with the quantum tour kvd or the Powell square bill rod. My question is, what do I need to do to set up the winch to cast those little cranks and not backlash 50% of the time? Seems like every other cast right now I am pulling out a small backlash. Thanks 1 Quote
Professional Overrun Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 This 2.5 just caught my pb of 5lbs last evening! I think these are owner trebles i put on this one, they are atleast a size larger than stock, but are short enough to not tangle. Sorry i dont remember the exact size, but they grip like crazy, the thing about these cranks is that you can step up in hook size like kvd does and not ruin the action of the bait because its such a wide wobble to begin with. I hope the picture works, sorry if it doesnt come through, tried posting it from my droid :/ Quote
Chattahoochee Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 i believe stock hooks on strike king cranks are VMC. Might not be the case with the 1.5 and 2.5's though. Quote

Thanks These general comments apply to any baitcasting set-up and tuning them for frst-time use. 1) Set the brake to zero (if applicable) 2) Adjust spool tension so the lure falls slowly on free-spool. 3) Increae brake to 50% (if applicable) 4) Adjust on the water to maximize distance and minimize backlash. Thanks Check your centrifugal brakes. If they are all pressed in, move one set (Opposites) out. Play with the spool tension knob. That should take care of it. Sorry, I mis-hit the don't like key. My error. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Stock hooks on mine seem very solid. Dunno who makes them, but mine held up the entire year, still feel strong and sharp as heck. Quote
Pharticus Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 My first one lasted 1 cast. Hooked into a tiger muskie that snapped my line and swam away from the side of the boat. Hooks seemed A-OK to me! Quote
