Choey23 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Whats up guys, I know this forum probably gets this a lot, but there are so many lines and different types that it just confuses the hell out of me, i recently ordered a Abu Garcia Orra SX bait caster reel/rod combo, the reel gear ration is 6:4:1 and the rod line lb test recommended is 8-15lb, its a 6.6 Medium action rod. I will be doing mostly bass fishing witht his rod, as well as the occasional pike fishing, but mostly bass. I like to fish a lot of spinnerbaits, but want to dig into the whole carolina and texas rig scene. So my question is what would be the best overall line for a general setup that i have, in other words the best overall line that can be applied to numerous applications, as well as cast efficiently with a bait caster, all reply's are more than appreciated, thanks for the help guys Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 My suggestion would be that if you are new or newer to baitcasting to use a good mono or copoly line. If you are newer to bait casting equipment mono or copoly will offer a couple of benefits, it's limp and easy to cast, and it cost far less than a quality braid or fluoro line. While you are getting use to using a baitcast combo it is certain that you will experience backlashes, you will feel far less frustrated cutting an inexpensive mono from your spool than your would a high dollar fluoro. As an additional benefit, once you feel you have mastered the new setup, you already have your backing spooled on the reel. Looking at the info you provided about your rod, I would look at something like a 12lb Suffix mono. Good luck. Quote
Choey23 Posted February 19, 2012 Author Posted February 19, 2012 thanks a lot aavery2, however, i am not that new to bait casting, i used one all last summer, and used regular line to a green power braided line, however, i never put to much thought into line selection which was probably a bad idea, after reading through the forums and understanding how important line selection is, i want to select the correct line, i fished a lot last summer, basically everyday, and have become efficient with the technique( after backlashes and bird nests)which everyone has been through, would you recommend a different line if i know how to use my bait caster or still the same setup? thanks again for your help Quote
Brand0n Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 ive got two rods rigged with 20lb p-line floroclear and love it. its for my jig rods but same goes for texas rigs. this line casts so easy and its easy to manage with line conditioner but my rods recommend up to 20lb line Quote
The Next KVD Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I would go with 15lb P-line 100% Flourocarbon. I suggest this because 1. your already know how to cast with a baitcaster 2. this line is very abrasion resistant which if your going up against the occasional pike is important 3. it casts like a dream compared to all the other flourocarbons 4. its invisible which can be an advantage in clear water situations 5. it lasts a long time if taken care of properly and 6. the 15lb test will do spinnerbaiting, carolina rigging texas rigging and alot more just don't use this line for topwater. A few helpful hints on using this line: 1. Fill the reel up 1/2 way with some cheap mono (anything will do but choose something around 4-6lb test. Cover that line up with electrical tape and fill the rest of the spool with the flourocarbon. Basically your increasing the spool diameter thus needing less line required to fill the spool. You will almost never get to the line at the bottom of the spool the old fashion way and why pay for expensive line thats not going to even think about hitting the water. I can usually spool 3 reels on one spool of line so it makes it more affordable. Finally get a bottle of KVD line and lure condionoer and spray it on the line atleast the night before you go fishing with the fresh line. Than spray lightly before you make your first cast and apply again when your done for the day. Quote

This gets into bait specific lines though, I used it to form a matrix with my various baitcasting rods and reels, in order to most efficiently fish all the baits I have, which is a pretty extensive collection. I ended up with 6 or 7 primary rigs, and a few duplicates for hunting, that is I may have 2 or 3 rigs for baitcasting so I can try more than one lure without having to change out baits. The less time you waste on unproductive water, the more fish you'll catch, or so say many experts. Before you leave an area you should try top, middle and bottom, lures, better still if you can try several of each type, and do so in as short a span of time as possible. In the end, I used only braid and flurocarbon lines. YMMV Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 I'm old school and I do well. I use Berkley Trilene 8# XT on my spinning set up for tubes, light jigs and shaky head fishing. On my casting reels I use 12# Silver thread AN40 for crankbaits and jerkbaits, and for jigs and spinnerbaits in and around weeds and light cover I use 12# Cajun Clear Lightning and in heavy cover jig fishing and frog fishing I use 30# Power Pro braid. Simple and it works, I tried flourcarbons on spinning and hated it and it was ok on casting gear but I don't trust the knot strength. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 thanks a lot aavery2, however, i am not that new to bait casting, i used one all last summer, and used regular line to a green power braided line, however, i never put to much thought into line selection which was probably a bad idea, after reading through the forums and understanding how important line selection is, i want to select the correct line, i fished a lot last summer, basically everyday, and have become efficient with the technique( after backlashes and bird nests)which everyone has been through, would you recommend a different line if i know how to use my bait caster or still the same setup? thanks again for your help Sorry about that, it was an assumption on my part and you know what they say about assuming things. With your level of experience there are many good lines available, that will not break the bank. A good quality Fluorocarbon line may be the best choice for the techniques you mentioned. I would suggest looking at Seaguar InvisX in 15lb test, or if you really want to splurge Tatsu would be an awesome line. While I like InvisX for its manageability and knot strength, it does seem to have a little more stretch than some other lines. Get as many opinions as you can, and make an educated decision. Good luck. Quote
Choey23 Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 wow thanks guys all of your reply's so far are awesome and very helpful, thank you very much, if anyone else has any other opinions feel free to comment, thanks again Quote
volchuck Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I second RW on the Yo-zuri 12# hybrid. Loaded it on a 6.4.1 and fished it over the weekend, had 100% trilene 15# on another. Both are good, I thought the yozuri 12 had a little better feel & castability, the 100% trilene I could pull a tank out of the weeds, got hung up a couple times and had to clip the line at the rod it was so strong and flexible. The yozuri seemed a great balance of feel and still very strong. I also loaded P-line floro clear on a finesse rig and really like it as well. Yozuri and the P-Line are my favorites Quote
McAlpine Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 10lb Flouro. Whatever brand you want. Quote
Choey23 Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 thanks for the replies fellas, I'm probably going to go with the 15# P-Line, seems the best for an overall use application because i only have 2 bait casting rods, and i wanna do most of the fishing on my new one that i just purchased, and just delicate my other rod for one or 2 things, anyone have any ideas on how i could set this up??
