Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 Daiwa SS-II 2500C spinning reel. Figured to spool it with 8 lb. mono altho 6lb. is also a possibility. Most ML rods have a lower limit of 1/8 ounce. I am looking at the ML rods with a 1/16 oz. lower rating. I want the rod to be an all-around rod for its power rating. I think I would prefer a longer rod to help balance the weight of this reel. However, that severly limits my choices. I've decided I'm not going to let a few inches stop me from consumating a good deal. LOL. I haven't researched every rod out there, but this is what I've come up with so far. The following rods fill the bill, but are more than I want to spend. Price listed is the best I could find without too much digging. Haven't found any used rods in these models. Powell Endurance 6'10" Light......$170 Daiwa Light & Tough TL-721-2FS.....$148 Crucial CRSD72MLA.....$160 Compre CPS70ML2C....$110...More than I want to spend.....but...... There is a used Crucial CRS70ML for $100 TYD. This very well may be the best value I've found. I did find a new Pinnacle Perfecta DHC5-701SPML for $125.94 with free shipping. Definitely stretching my budget, but I'm tempted after reading RoadWarrior's comments on their new rods and reels. :) Another possibility is a Kistler Magnesium series MGDSFWML69S that would run $102.99 shipped. However it is listed as a Drop Shot rod that also works well for Shaky Head Worming, Dart Heading and Spot Remover. I've never fished any of these techquenics. Yup, need to broaden my horizons. LOL. Would this rod also work for lures such as very small crankbaits, Roostertails and Beetlespins? The Elite Tech Smallmouth ESMS69ML-F would be on my short list if it weren't the only rod on Amazon in this series that is currently selling for its regular price. If I were to spend that much $$$, then the Perfecta would be my first choice. Now if I decide a 1/8 oz. lower limit is fine, then a whole lot more rods become options. I can get a new ET Smallmouth ESMS69M-XF for $80.89 shipped. Am I unnecessarily limiting my choices by going with the 1/16 oz. lower limit instead of 1/8 oz.? Is that extra 1/16 oz. even important enough to worry about in everyday fishing? I do have a couple ultralight rods, but haven't used them since switching to baitcasting gear a couple years ago. Been letting my grandsons use them. They are quite outdated, and if I decided the ML rod was too heavy, I'd want to buy a better rod. Apologize for the exceedingly long post, but I don't know when to stop. Or how to say all I want to say with far less words. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 I did find a new Pinnacle Perfecta DHC5-701SPML for $125.94 with free shipping. Definitely stretching my budget, but I'm tempted after reading RoadWarrior's comments on their new rods and reels. :) I just purchased this rod and paried it with a shimano stradic ci4 2500 and it is probably my new favorite spinning setup. Even more so than my st croix legend elite. I am pretty sure you found the same deal I did on boatersworld. I would HIGHLY suggst it. BW was out of the rod so it took a little longer than expected to get it, but I was VERY happy with the purchase! Jeff Quote

I haven't tried shaky heading with it, but I don't think I'd like it for that because I prefer an XF action for shaky heads. Infamous Fisher is trying to sell a couple of them in the Flea Market forum. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/97520-kistler-spinning-rods-for-sale-price-lowerednew-pics-added/ Quote
infamous fisher Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Thanks for the free marketing there bird dog, I have just sold one of the ML and have MH and ML left. I can't go as low as 102.99 for one due to the price of shipping, but can do definitely sell the MH and the ML for $200 if you are interested new2BC4bass. It will give you another reason to add a new reel . The MH can be great for throwing weightless tubes and worms. Let me know if interested and good luck on your search. Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 19, 2012 Super User Posted February 19, 2012 Lamiglas Excel 703 or 702 would be great for what you are doing. I have the 703 and it says that it's 1/4-1/2 but I have thrown 1/12oz spinners on it with no trouble at all. I DS and shaky with mine on 6 and 8lb YZ Hybrid. At BTD they are $88 shipped right now. There are no standards in rod ratings, only suggested weight ranges. Don't fret over a 1/16-oz. Buy a ML rated down to 1/8-oz. and you'll be fine. I've got 5 such outfits now that I use and all of them are pretty cross functional when it comes to light tackle applications. Action (fast, x-fast, mod.) will be more important. -T9 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 21, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks, guys. Intruder I sent a reply. I had already asked Infamous for specs on his ML rods. I don't need a MH. Accidentally bought one last year. I try to use baitcasters in that range unless fishing from shore...which I didn't do last year. Bird dog, glad to hear these lures work great on such a rod. 00 mod, yup, that is where I found it. Webertime, where did you find those prices on Excels? I didn't see them at that price on BTD. Their starting price is $109..99. Team9, I am going to assume a fast action will be the most all-around, but I never thought of such things before 02/09. My understanding is that a Moderate action will throw a light lure further than a Fast action. I guess the best action is going to be a compromise between loading (for casting), working a lure, hook setting, etc. I've done considerable thinking since posting. I've come to realize this particular rod will see more action than my other 2 spinning outfits because of its lure range. I try to stay with BC gear whenever possible. Therefore I am going to increase my budget a bit. The Perecta and Crucial (provided still available) have become my top 2 choices with a couple others not far behind. Sure wish it were possible to try out the rods first, but...as usual...I will have to buy sight unseen (and untried). Quote

Hi's Tacklebox has them for $99.95 shipped. If you live in the Northeast you are more than welcome to check mine out. PM me if you want to know where EliteTech Smallmouth and Abu Garcia Villians are DIRT cheap right now. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 23, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 23, 2012 Well, made a choice tonight. Couldn't pass up a $180 rod for $102. Yup, webertime, went with the Villain ML. Thanks for the info. Apprecate all the replies from everyone. Hopefully this rod will also handle ligher lures as well as the Excel does. Quote
