I am working too much at the Pyramid!

My local fishing has been weak this spring with very few fish and no monsters.

I am going to Grove this morning and will post a report later today.

Went to Herb Parsons this past Sunday, had alot of bites, but only brought in a small cat fish and small bass, also hooked a turtle. On the way home we spotted and went under the Houston-Levee bridge at Wolf River and hooked into a pretty big catfish but it got away. Hopefully my luck will get better soon

What were you using for the catfish?

Chicken concoction my fiance' mixes up, and some worms. I was also using some spinner bait and other kinds of bait

RW - don't work too hard. I haven't been down there yet but want to stop by and meet you sometime. You've done so much for so many folks. If you look up my Bass Pro purchases, there is a heck of a lot of money that could be directly tied to your posts. Literally, YOU got me into bass fishing. Thanks for all you do.

Speaking of Road Warrior, I got the privilege to meet Kent today out at Grove. He is a really good guy! I agree, he has done a lot to help people on this site and I want to thank him for all he has done. Looking forward RW to going fishing with you at Graham in the near future.

If anyone hasn't been to the pyramid yet, you need to check it out, It is pretty mind-blowing.

I haven't run into Kent there yet but the store is incredible, I've been in 6-7 other bps stores and none compare.

It is an instant hit on the tourist attraction list, everyone we've taken there so far

has loved it!

Just found this group a few days ago and thought I'd say hello.  Retired from the Army and originally from Maine so it is going to be a new concept to be able to fish pretty much year round.  Have been out a few times in the last couple of week.  Hit Patriot Lake on Shelby Farms, Neshoba a couple of times and Appling Lake a few times (it's close to home) and caught 0, 2 and 2.  Actually caught a 1.5lb smallmouth on a jointed shad-rap at Appling this morning.  Hope everyone has a great holiday.

Wt,

We've got close to 100% largemouth in the ponds here. There are a few spotted bass/ Kentuckies in some of the river systems, like the wolf.

No smallies here though, you will find them in the tn river and to the west in Arkansas as well.

Nice profile pic!!

Trying to find Grove.  Noticed that Roadwarrior said it was near Houston Middle School so I looked on Google earth, found the school but no Grove Lake, did find Grove Park Clubhouse, but no lake there either.  Looked up Grove Park in Germantown and got 1610 Hardy Oaks Drive, put that into Google Earth and ended up at Municipal Park behind the Germantown City Hall and Library, but this is not even close to Houston Middle School.  There is a lake NW of Houston Middle School, but using Google Earth I really can't see any access without going through someone's backyard.  Any help would be appreciated.

The pond you see to the NW of the school is Grove. If you are on Wolf River and turn north onto Johnson Road, take the first left onto Groveway. Follow that road (it changes names) around the bend and keep going. There if you look closely on Google maps, near the NE corner of the pond there is an access road with an established parking lot. Be mindful there are lots of kids in the neighborhood so always be a good ambassador.

I fished the pond behind Houston High School for the first time this weekend. I ended up catching a few small ones. Just curious if anybody has ever caught a nice one over there? Also, fished Appling last week and saw a guy catch a pretty nice one. He asked me what I thought it weighed so we weighed it on my scale. It was an even 4lbs. What urked me was the guy then put it on the stringer. He said he was going to put it back after he was done. Believe it or not the guy actually put it back about an hour an a half later. The problem though was He stressed the fish so much that it belly roled and flopped for a long time before I lost sight of it. I hope she made it, I just don't understand if he wasn't planning on keeping it why didn't he just take a pic and throw it back?? weird.

I have some buddies who are in a softball league that plays at Houston HS and they have fished there a ton before games. The only thing they have caught is little stuff.

Your story about Appling is very strange, but mostly sad. We all need to be that much more of conservationists and sportsmen to make up for that kind of stuff.

I prescribe saying 10 of these:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.

....and then go cleanly catch and release as many fish as you can until you feel you've offset this egregious violation :)

Seriously though, I agree that this is poor handling of the fish, but you will only stress yourself out worrying about things you can't control.  If there was no law broken, you really just have to let it go.

The time spent worrying about this would be much better spent fishing, IMO :)

And believe me, I fully understand that it doesn't feel fair for one guys actions to potentially have a negative effect on your fishing experience (by maybe killing that fish), while your actions don't have a neg effect on theirs; but whether you are right or wrong, you will encounter situations like this one in areas of life, and that is probably why the little prayer I quoted above was written in the first place - maybe someone was jacking up the guys fishing hole when he wrote it :):)

Good fishing!!

I just read an article online (TWRA website) that said that Herb Parsons was the newest TWRA lake chosen to be stocked with Florida Strain Largemouth. That's great news for us Memphis guys. I'm not sure how well they have managed the bass population there so this is encouraging. It will take a while but that could be a great lake in the future!!

Ha, I laughed out loud when I read that about carp.

I've had a few times recently where I accidentally threw my buzzer or whatever I was using right on their head this year, in the dark....It sounds like someone threw a bowling ball in the lake when they take off!!

That sound will let you know you're alive, for sure!!

As far as finding the carp, just start going to ponds and walk the banks with polarized glasses, they are not hard to spot.  Ponds with grass and silted ponds usually seem to hold a lot of them.

Herb Parsons has carp too, I caught a 40 lbr once there on a redeye shad, in the mouth.

I fished a pond recently that had a fish kill (or I should say I had planned to fish it). There were 4 or 5 40-60lb carp floating, probably 30 buzzards hanging around, and a lot of nice bass carcasses on the bank, it was a very sad sight.

Catfish are just about everywhere, I think I've heard mention of one being caught at Grove on a Senko :)

If you're not worried about size, Glenn and Herb Parsons stock a ton of cats and people seem to catch them off of the bank pretty easily.

I caught a cat on my buzzer the other night at a private pond too, that was a first.

Good Luck!

MFBAB,

trust me I have been looking without any luck!  I was wondering if anyone has seen any at our local ponds/lakes recently.  It would save me a lot of footwork seeing as though bank sighting can be hit or miss depending on the time.

I can tell you for sure, almost every golf course pond EVER has grass carp in it :)  Getting permission is the hard part on that one.  I've played most of the courses here and carp are ubiquitous wherever water is found on a golf course.

I'm pretty sure I saw some at the Bartlett ponds located behind the shopping center at N/E corner of Stage & Whitten also.

There is an old pay lake near Shelby Forest called Lyles Lake, if you google the Shelby Forest General Store they can probably give you contact info for it,  it is located just N of the store but not affiliated with it.  That pond used to LOADED w big carp, and some nice bass too.  I haven't fished there in 15 years, so not current info :)

They have boats available and the flats in the back of the pond are silted in and were always full of carp.

Orgill Park might be a good place to look, but I can't say there are carp in it for sure.  This is a large public pond adjacent to a public golf course with heavily silted creek arms.  I think it might be a slam dunk for carp.

Generally, I would look for ponds w grass, because carp may be stocked to control it.

Also, look for silted ponds, because if they are there they will be easier to locate in shallow water.

If you like catching all UGLY fish :laugh5: , spend some time on the TN river, it is loaded w drum and they will hit anything a bass will, but shiners are preferred.

Oh, I almosat forgot:

If you have an aluminum boat, run it around on the Mississippi River or anything connected to it, the Asian Carp will be jumping in the boat before long - wear a helmet.

Good Luck!!

Hey guys, new to the Memphis area and also to bass resource. I read thru a lot of the past posts on this topic, I hit the pond by chick fila last night off Germantown parkway. Had a couple good bites but couldn't bring any in. What's some recomendations on ponds and what they are liking to hit on now a days? Thanks

Soft plastics, especially rigged on a shakey head.

Try the GYCB Kut Tail (green pumpkin/ red flakes)

 on a 3/8 oz MegaStrike ShakE2. I'm also having

some luck with the Rage Tail 10" Thumper.

My 10-yr old son wants to go slam some bream. I'm familair with most of the local public bass holes, but are any of them hotspots for hungry panfish?

Heads Up:

There's a big sale on Rage stuff at the Sycamore View BPS right now.

There is a bin right before you get to the rod and reel counter at the end of the main aisle, $2.79 a pack for

Lobsters,

Thumpers,

Anacondas,

Grubs,

and maybe a couple of other types - this is Friday afternoon, so they will go fast :)

Again, it's not all types and not all colors, but the price is more than a 50% mark down on what's there.

Maybe Kent will see this and let us know if the sale is also at the Pyramid.

Good luck this w/end, I plan on fishing both mornings, I'll probably hit Grove 1 of those days so say hi if you see me!

I'll be the guy sweating profusely and wearing a camo fanny pack!

Fished Glenn Springs this morning and had a pretty good day. 15 total, biggest was 3.4 and a couple of 2lbers. I have fished this lake a lot more this summer and really like it. I have caught a lot of 3 and 4 lb fish out of there this year. I just cant seem to snag a big'un!! With that said, my fishing days will slow down a lot because this teacher has to go back to work :(   It has been a good summer and I got to do what I love the most "FISH"!!  LOL, Will have to do most of my fishing on the weekends now.
