I'm telling you guys, if you can make it to one of the local TWRA lakes their on fire! Just got back from Graham Lake in Jackson, TN. Caught 20 bass and 2 of them were just over 5 pounds. Took my father in law who has never fished and he had the time of his life.

You must know something I don't know !!! I live about 2 to 3 miles from Glen Springs. I think I have found every tree top and every fence post in the lake in every cove. I've thrown everything I have except a frog. The best I've done there is two small bass and a bucket load of bream. I know there's fish in it because my Humming Bird says so. I just can't get a bite.

Throw the frog. Up against the banks and in the holes of the moss, algae, grass, and whatever it is. I was just up there Thursday. We caught 10bass in the short time we were there. Was also using a blue&silver spinnerbait.

I'm ready to get back to Graham and Gibson.

I get my best results at Glenn Springs using either a Yum Dinger(Senko worm)or a Zoom Rainbow shad Super Fluke. The Super Fluke was killing them this weekend. Sometimes you can wacky rig your senko and that works too. Good luck I'm sure it will pick up!

Never been there. Did you take a boat, rent a boat or beat the bank?

I have a boat, its about 500 acres so would be hard to fish effectively from the bank. its full of standing timber and stumps. Lots of cover to target.

Dan,

I will give you a couple tips about fishing Glenn Springs. Throughout the summer, when the grass mats on top, it is time for 2 presentations: Hollow body frogs/mice & punching.

Troll from mat to mat listening for the bluegill feeding (crackle & pop sound). When you come on one of those, toss your frog next to any timber you see in the mat and also look for irregular lines in the mat (where 2 different grasses meet). I get many strikes in these areas. I will also punch these mats. Again, looking for timber in the mat, irregular grass lines, & holes in the mat. I promise you will increase you numbers by doing this alone.

Once I am done with the frogs & punching, I head to the creek channels & drop-offs. Everyone I see out there beats the bank. You can catch some by doing this, but you will be MUCH more consistent if you use your sonar to find the drop-offs & creek channels.

If you are standing on the pier looking across the lake, there is a big main lake point directly across from you. That cove is a spawning cove & has a creek running from the back of it to the main lake. Depending on what stage the bass are in ( pre, spawn, or post) depends where on that creek they are. The hotter the weather, the closer to the main lake they will be. Where the creek meets the main lake, there is a huge pile of submerged timber. There are almost always bass stacked in & around that timber (it sits on the edge of a drop-off to deep water). Work the cove well & you will find fish.

Looking from the pier again, There is one other main lake point to the left of the one I just discussed. That point runs about 30-40 yards underwater. It runs to about 15-20 fow (depending on the lake level). at the 10-12 ft mark, there is a stump field. I catch many bass on jerkbaits & crankbaits in that stump field. Crash you cranks into the stumps & you will get bit. That stump field sits right on the edge of...you guessed it...a drop-off. In between those 2 points, there is a small bluff wall that drops from 5-8 fow to 15-18 fow. There is a grass bed on top of the wall. There are many bass that feed on top of the wall early & late day then drop to the bottom of it midday. Jerkbaits & jigs have been the bet for me in this section. See the point I am getting at? Find the drop-offs...find the bass.

Along with these areas, there are a few humps just south of the dam that hold fish in the summer. They sit in 20-25 fow & rise to 10-15 ft. Use you sonar to find the drop-offs Then work them good & I bet you will start catching more bass. I always hear people say they never catch anything out there, but I always catch good fish out there & I'm definitely no pro!

I live 10 min from there & fished it often until I jacked my arm up. I should be able to fish again by mid June. If you like, we can meet out there then & fish together once I heal from my surgery. I hope this helps you some! Good luck!

Good tips for Glenn springs, its defiantly about finding the points and drop offs there.

Thought I'd share a little redneck invention I came up with.

Basically, I was sick of the standard "selfie" bass pics and decided to come up with a quick, easy, cheap and functional way to get a better pic when fishing the ponds alone.

This was yesterday without the camera holder:

Very simple, and it fits in my fanny pack.

I was able to use it today with an iphone without ever having to let go of the fish during setup, which I like A LOT!!  The fish was out of the water for maybe a minute total and released in good shape.

Basically, you just take it out, set it on the ground, take your iphone and set it on a 10 second timer, lay the phone in the holder with the screen facing away from you, and get ready for the pic.

Easy as pie and you get a good high resolution pic instead of the poor quality selfie pics .  Also, these are dirt cheap to make, you can make a few and leave one in the boat and anywhere else you might need it.  And it floats :)

Hope someone can use this!!

Also, these came on buzzbaits, the top one was at Grove park (both pics) and I lost one a couple of pounds bigger that morning.  The bait on the pic is a Cavitron, but the larger one hit a SK Tri Wing.

The other one was in another Shelby County pond in an undisclosed location :)  That was a fun catch because I was standing on a bulkhead about 4' above the water, so I had to dead-lift that 5.5 lbr up to me on 17 lb Excel :):)  That was on a cavitron also, and it held up to the punishment pretty well.

BTW, that was an excellent post re: Glenn Springs by gr8outdoors, he gave a lot of good advice there!!

MFBAB - what time of day were they hitting the buzzbait at Grove?

Posted

I was there around sunrise on Wednesday.  I only had 4 bites in an hour or so, but I never seem to get a lot of bites at Grove the few times I've fished there.

#1 I missed

#2 was a 7 lbr that got off at the bank, it jumped 4-5 x during the fight, just a tough one to get in on the bank.

#3 was a 1 lbr

#4 was the one in the pic, spawned out female about 5 lbs, probably would've been 6 a couple of weeks ago :)

Nice going! That's a pretty good return for your time spent at Grove.

I fished Grove for 2 hrs this morning at daybreak throwing a buzzbait and Spook. Didn't get even a sniff from anything but a turtle! And so it goes at Grove.

Grove is the definition of frustration for me. You know there are great fish in there because of this site, but there are so many days that it does not deliver even one fish. Grove is well stocked with disappointment!

I totally agree with you on Grove, I have fished there several times and only caught one fish ever. But, the one I caught was a giant. Its just enough to keep me coming back LOL!

I have a question about the Collierville Civic Center Pond. I just started fishing there this spring and have been several times. It seems like I always catch fish but their basically the same size. I was wondering are there any underwater structure areas (Drops, ditches, etc.) that I can key in on? Just trying to key in on some larger fish if possible. Thanks for any advice anyone can spare.

Ha, Grove is one of those ponds that you never get many bites on (my experience)....But the quality is there.  I've honestly had an equal  or greater number of 5+ bites there to dinks.  I never remember getting more than 2-5 bites on a given trip, but half of those are studs.  I just don't get to fish it much because of distance.

I usually only fish for about an hour or 2 tops at a pond that size, it helps to keep the concentration level up for me.

One tip on Grove, and ponds in general, I think it's important to be quiet and sneaky there, those fish see a lot of baits.  You will see those v-wakes shooting out from the bank in front of you a lot over there if you're not a little stealthy.

As far as Halle (C-ville civic), the best thing I've found to focus on there is the edge of the grass, it drops off at that point.  The trouble is that you can't really parallel it from the bank because of the angle.  That edge is too far off the bank to get a parallel retrieve so you have to fish it perpendicular and get something to hang on that edge as long as you can.  Dropshpot, crig, trig, weightless fluke or senko, just try to deadstick a plastic bait on that edge. I try to get a bait on the grass edge around points, indentions, any irregularities.  That lake would fish a lot easier from a boat though, imo.

Again, that's another one I don't fish a lot because of the distance and also because there are a lot of ponds I like to bank fish on better.

Thanks for the advice, that's kinda what I have been doing using flukes. I have never fished a drop shot rig so think I'm going to practice it out there this summer.  Thanks again for you help!

A pond hoppers worst nightmare :):) :)

This is at Chickasaw Gardens in Memphis, the pond is a Memphis Park, not a private SD pond, but still no fishing allowed :Idontknow:

Also, has anybody fished the lake behind Kroger on Whitten Rd? Was wondering if it was worth my time to go there.

I fished it this morning, only 2 bites (and missed 2) but one was about 5 lbs, spawned out female.

The fish looks horrible in the pic, but it was just in muddy water and a little bleached out.  Otherwise, pretty healthy fish.

That's great news for me! I live really close to that pond so It will be easy for me to fish there when I only have a little time to go. Didn't think there were any bass there. Have you fished the pond on Altruria inside the little park? Is it worth my time to give it a try?

No, I haven't tried the one on Altruria.  This was actually my first time fishing the pond behind Kroger as well.

It was a little odd, I fished for about an hour and caught only 2, but the funny thing was that they were on back to back casts and pretty soon after I arrived.

I thought I was getting ready to put the hurt on them pretty good for a minute there:)
