FishWitWiz Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Goodbye and Thank You to my fellow Memphis Pond Hoppers! After a 12+ year adventure of moving all over the country, my wife and I have decided to finally head home. We'll be here in TN a few more weeks but I wanted to give a sincere thank you to Roadwarrior, 00 mod and MFBAB as many of your posts on here were my primary education for bass fishing. I'd never caught a bass or even thought about going bass fishing until moving to Tennessee and once I got into it, it was truly an addiction. I looked at my fishing journal and last year I went fishing a grand total of 110 times! I may sneak out to hit a pond or two before the move, but pretty soon the rods will get packed away. I wish you all of the best and I look forward to checking in here to see all of the pics. Jimmy 2 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted March 30, 2016 Super User Posted March 30, 2016 Grove has been tough lately with the high murky water. The rain today and tomorrow will not help! Quote
UFpwrLifter Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Has anyone tried the rockyford pond at the end of whitten rd? The water was very cloudy and I've seen tons of turtle in there and what looked like a very large goldfish (koi??). Does that pond hold large mouth bass? Quote

Someone posted that there was a fish kill there not long ago, I think he said he lived near that pond. Maybe they will chime in about the bass fishing there. I've been seeing those Koi all over the place in the ponds this spring, I think they must be stocking them to control grass. Quote

I haven't fooled with it much lately because it was so muddy the last time I checked it, but the fish should have adjusted to it by now. They've still gotta eat and they will still spawn soon. If you put your time in over there for the next couple of months, it'll happen Quote

MFBAB Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I've mentioned record keeping before, I thought it might help some people to see how I keep my fishing log, what to keep track of, etc. These are screenshots from an Excel Spreadsheet. I have it color coded so I can spot things at a glance. It looks like a lot, but it only takes a few minutes to fill in the boxes and make a few comments after you fish, and the ability to look at all of your trips on one screen like this (as opposed to a notebook or something) is amazing, the trends just jump out at you-both the good and the bad stuff you're doing. I left off the pond names and one or two details, but y'all should get the idea Hope this helps! These pics would all be in a long row from left to right on my spreadsheet screen....not stacked like this. Oh, and don't judge me for all of those yellow "zeros", I've had some tough trips at some ponds, but like I said, if you look at the dates, a lot of those are clustered on one day with a good catch at one of the stops-I only average about 1 hour per place. I'm still fishing a lot of "new to me" water, and that comes with some shut-outs, especially in the early season. 1 Quote
UFpwrLifter Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Thanks for sharing. And they say you can only catch fish at sunrise and sunset! I'm going to start sleeping in and fishing midday ? Quote
EllisJuan Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Thanks MFBAB. I got skunked the last two days at Halle...Maybe I will give a rage craw a throw tomorrow. I did OK there with a trap last week, this week I have been catching nothing but slime. I have not been to Grove yet. Where can you park to fish there? What road is it on? Quote
FishWitWiz Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 MFBAB, after reviewing your table, this meme came to mind... 1 Quote

UFpwrLifter Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Anyone been out of glenn springs lately? I am headed there tomorrow and renting one of their boats. Thanks for any tips/reports. Quote
EllisJuan Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Tough going today. I spend about an hour at City Hall and an hour at Grove (my first time there)...skunked at both. I could see bait fish being chased a lot at Grove, but it was just out of reach from the bank. I am about to sell my GTO and start boat shopping. Are there good lakes in the region if I had a something like a 19' tracker? Quote

Are there good lakes in the region if I had a something like a 19' tracker? I spent 5hrs at Glenn springs (7-12pm). North of the store is clear water and south is cloudy. Rented one of their little Jon boats with a 5hp and thought I'd be severely undergunned, but soon realize it's not safe to go much faster than a fast idle as there are hundreds of stumps in the water. Threw a variety of baits, mostly at banks and some around timbers. It was tough without a trolling motor and an indecisive wind. Only caught 1, but it's my first bass in Tennessee and I couldn't be happier! By 10am the lake was too small for the amount of boats out there. Plan to spend some time pond hopping at the local joints in the future weekends. 1 Quote

Are there good lakes in the region if I had a something like a 19' tracker? Absolutely! Pickwick is 2 hours East. Some of the best crappie fishing in the country is right down I-55-Butla, Sardis, Enid, Grenada. Glenn Springs TWRA lake is N of Memphis in Drummonds, about an hour. Poplar Tree at Shelby Forest State Park, Herb Parsons TWRA lake about 30 minutes east. A good way to familiarize yourself with some of the local lakes would be to subscribe to the Mid South Hunting and Fishing News. They have monthly fishing reports for most of the area lakes so you would have a good starter list to work with. The reports in this magazine are not kept as current as they used to be, they tend to repeat a lot of them these days (by repeat, I mean they will republish the same reports for some lakes every year, they will be seasonally correct for the month published, it just might be from a couple of years back) but the information is still pretty useful if you are unfamiliar with the area. I highly recommend it as a starting point. Quote
Mr. Ranger Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 This thread needed a "BUMP". Bait question: Anybody use any frogs at a pond in the area? I'm always tempted to buy some lunker hunters just to make my tackle box look more complete, but I'm not sure where in town I would use them. Quote

Great action on those things. Only complaint is some of them have weak leg joints and will get pulled out after a long battle(s). I have several and has only happened to one of the combat frogs, so don't know if that was just a lemon. LOVE frog fishing. Quote
