MFBAB Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Had a fun morning today. I saw the first Hummingbird of the year (for me), saw a red Fox, and did something I've never done before...caught a crappie on a Buzzbait I've caught a lot of them on spinnerbaits and even once flipping a jig, but not ever on topwater. Also caught one pretty nice bass and a few dinks.  Is anyone else fishing??    1 Quote

FishWitWiz Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Fished Kroger on Monday afternoon and Daycare last night. No hits at Kroger, surprised about the snake comment, seems park-like. Getting small ones at Daycare. Heard that the bucket & icebox crowd has been there recently. Made friends with a cottonmouth and a bunch of big watersnakes at Daycare. Quote
MFBAB Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 I agree on Kroger, it seems to be well maintained other than some litter, but the grass is cut. I didn't see one there, but that's my only experience.  Ranger, welcome to the party! I fished Rockyford this morning. Quote

Mr. Ranger Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 Headed to Grove to try a new color- anyone had any luck with Pearl or White crankbait? Trying out a new (to me) Curado on a crankin stick as well. I'll post if I catch anything. Quote
MFBAB Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Anything white or bone can be good, especially for the ponds with shad like most of the ones adjacent to the Wolf - this includes Grove.  Bream colored stuff is good too right now, they are up bedding on this full moon cycle  Do you guys see many people keeping bass out of the ponds? Just curious, I haven't run into too many folks keeping fish, but I have hit a few ponds that were dink city, which to me is a big sign that they need to start coming out. One thing I will say, if you fish a lake like that, it is probably a good big bream pond! There's one near me (sorry, lake x) that I can go to and literally catch 15-20 bass in an hour-not kidding, but I've never seen a fish over 1.5 lbs come out of it-and it is loaded with stud bream. I catch and release on ponds other than private ones under a management program, but there are definitely times when keeping a few unders can be good for a pond.  This is an excerpt from a pond management article on the MDWFP website:  Small Bass Issues Currently, the most common problem Fisheries Biologists encounter in Mississippi farm ponds is an abundance of small bass from 8-14 inches. A few large bass are usually present and the bream are hand-size -- really nice. Catch rates of small bass are high and body condition is usually poor. They appear skinny and have shallow or inverted bellies. They may have large heads and small bodies. If you are a bream angler this is the idea situation to have. If you want larger bass, you have a problem. The problem is there are too many bass for the amount of food present, so they all grow very slowly and die after 6-7 years before reaching a good weight. If you don't harvest the bass in a pond after they are 2 years old it is almost certain to become bass-crowded with slow growth rates. FishWitWiz Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Daycare probably has the highest number of people taking fish home. Since it is so close to the road, the bucket brigade shows up in force. I don't know if the fish there have been tested lately but I'm willing to bet that they are unsafe for consumption due to all of the runoff and nearby sewage. I have seen people take fish from Mulch pond, but only catfish. Quote
Mr. Ranger Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Morning- sadly I did not get out to Grove yesterday as expected.  Just curious though, where is 'daycare'? Quote

Didn't get any attention to a buzzbait or worm.  If any of you guys get 'em figured out over there, let me know!  I haven't had much success there this Spring. Quote

Full Article: http://www.mdwfp.com/fishing-boating/pond-assistance/small-bass-issues.aspx I once long time ago fished a pond in Eads Tn that was so over stocked you could catch a Bass with every cast. He wanted me to take as many as I could. So I kept some for my kids and Grand Mother . Just left the rest on the bank. The fish had good length to them but no girth. I never saw my son have that much fun before. It wore him out and he fell asleep on the way home.. That's the first time anyone had fish there in ten years. What a day !!! Quote
Mr. Ranger Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Best I've done at Grove is with a pumpkin rage tail on a football head, black and blue skirt - but that was in cold water. I just have not been out there much since the weather has warmed up. That's why I was hoping to get out and try the white crankbait. I will take the advice on a BlueGill crankbait and give it a try as well. JDJ Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 My best day at Grove occurred last Summer fishing a black Senko. Â I was lucky to find a pocket of hefty, hungry bass ... but you just never know over there. Â I'm tempted to try a bit of finesse that the fish maybe don't see much. Â Ned rig anyone? Quote
MFBAB Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I fished johnson Rd Park this morning for about an hour and a half, caught 9 or 10, the biggest went about 3.5. All on an eggbeater  Saw another Red Fox today too, they are everywhere right now apparently!  One other thing, I found a nice looking Livingston Lures Popper today while fishing. Has anyone tried these baits? I haven't tied it on yet but it looks like they got the lip right on it, no need for a file  Apparently it is supposed to walk a little too, I guess we'll see.     I haven't fished the Daycare pond, that one is pretty overgrown, right? It's been a while since I've driven by there, I didn't realize that was the one you guys were calling daycare pond until now   Quote
MFBAB Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Ned rig anyone?  I caught an 8.5 out of there on a plain craw splitshot rig a couple of years ago (March 2012, I think), that was actually the last time I'd fished there prior to a couple of weeks ago when I posted a pic here. That was a prespawn female, and as usual for Grove, it was one of just a very few bites that day.  I don't see why a Ned Rig wouldn't work. That is a numbers bait IMO, but you can get a nice surprise sometimes on little baits  Quote

MFBAB Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I think there is a Johnson Park in C-Ville and one in G-Town, I was at the one in G-Town near Johnson Rd @ Poplar. There are 2 ponds there and both seemed to fish equally.  I haven't fished the one in C-Ville before. Quote

Also has anyone had any luck at herb parsons or glenn springs as of late off shore? Glenn Springs is tough tough to fish offshore. I've tried it and you have to fight through some heavy brush just to get to the shore. The grass makes it a challenge too. Nearly every retrieve comes back with the grass. I'm in the same situation as you- looking for any advice on how to fish Glenn Springs from the shore. The rocky dam had some promise, but I do not think I had the right bait. I was throwing crawdad crankbait in January, with zero luck. Quote

MFBAB Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Yep, Glenn Springs is going to be tough bank fishing due to the grass. Your best bet is going to be topwater at dawn and dusk if you're talking fishing the bank there during summer.  Herb Parsons has a trail around the lake and no grass in it so you can get more access, just fish it like you would a normal pond. Don't forget about the riprap there either, there are fish on it year round. Just bring a lot of jigs because you need to get down in the rocks to get them most of the time, and the rocks like to eat jigs  Topwater at dawn and dusk is a good option there too along the rip-rap, but you're a prisoner to the gate there as you are at Glenn   Hatchie has some ponds, you can get a map and free permit at the ranger station. I used to hunt there but never have fished it, you can try to ask someone at the office for info I guess.  Orgill park has a good sized lake/pond with easy bank access except around the golf course parts, and I've caught some good ones there up to 5-6 lbs in years past and heard of 8-10's but never seen one there. I would fish it more if it was closer   Poplar Tree at Shelby Forest has trail access to most of it as well and no grass to worry about. It too is gated and limited hours to fish.  Another option not talked about a lot is Shelby Farms, there are at least 6-7 decent sized ponds with bass there, you just have to hike a little to fish most of them. There is a snot grass issue with most of those too, you just need to fish the right baits to deal with it, it is good for bass but harder for fishermen. Think Flukes, Floating Worms, Frogs, etc..  Also, the park hours are a hindrance here during summer - sunrise to sunset.  IMO, most of the bigger TWRA lakes on this list are better fished from a boat, I think you get more bang for your buck on the bank fishing the smaller ponds. Hope that helps you.  Also, if you're willing to drive 2 hours, Pickwick around the tailrace can be a great place to bank fish for many species. Quote
