Chris Wilson Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 What points, on say a chronarch and revo sx, get oiled often? And how often do they get oiled? What warrants a full strip down and cleaning? I used my quantum for 9 years on and off before I stripped it and cleaned it. But having two new expensive reels (to me anyways) I'd like to take care of em. Quote
craww Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Assuming your just reffering to the parts of a reel that do get oil, and not grease... Just adding oil can have a negative effect on performance. You need to clean the part, be it a bearing, worm gear whatever then lube. With that said, I always thought the "lube port" in BPS reels was kinda dumb. The spool bearings get the most attention on my reels, probably every 8-10 trips or so. I don't use much oil on them. Your chronarch will have them in each side cover. The revo will have an additonal bearing on the spoolshaft, behind a pin. You can oil or grease the worm gear. Grease will be longer lasting, but it can trap dirt particles and cause premature wear (in theory, ive never personally seen it). Quote
Chad L Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 craww covered most of it, but also on the Abu reels they are non-disengaging levelwind meaning the levelwind moves when casting, reeling, drag is going out ect. Stick with just oil as to not cause the reel to slow down too much. But I am also with craww, if it needs lube/oil it is due for a complete cleaning and it isn't that hard to do if you pay attention and keep a schematic close by. I completely flush bearings and remove all old grease and overhaul drags ect. Then add 1 drop of oil to each bearing and reassemble. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 A reel should be deep cleaned and lubed annually, semi-annually if heavily used or in harsh conditions. In between cleanings the bearings and level wind worm gear can get a drop of light oil as needed. How often really depends on use. If fishing the same reel hard all day, every 3-4 trips, for casual use once or twice between cleanings may be fine. The Revo line uses a disengaging levelwind, it is the Ambassadeuer round reels that don't. Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 16, 2012 Super User Posted February 16, 2012 If this helps, I tend to put a drop of oil that is supplied with the reels on the spool bearings right from the start. I think they are a little dry for me. For oiling points, the spool bearing take most of the beating, so always keep them in the back of your mind as that spool is turning at very high RPMs on every cast you make. I always carry a cleaning kit or at least some reel oil with me no matter what. Breaking the reel down and cleaning, I do once a yyear. I mark for January to be the month that they are all cleaned out. I soak my bearings in Acetone to get all the old lube and oils out. Non chlorinated brake cleaner to spray out the spool bearing that is retained by the pin. The rest of the reel parts use a degreaser and a toothbrush to clean, and then grease and oil where manufacturer suggests. Keep the schematics by you, also a little plano box to put parts in so you dont lose them. I know people say dont over do the oil, but I put my bearings in one of the box compartments and put 1 drp on each side of the bearing and let them sit while I clean the rest of the reel, and then 1 drop after I reinstall, never had a problem. Be very neat and organized and thorough in the process, and you should be ok. PS Ardent makes a nice little kit. Quote
Chris Wilson Posted February 17, 2012 Author Posted February 17, 2012 Yeah I've heard and seen that too much oil can be a bad thing. I was just wondering if there are any areas I have to keep close attention to more often than others Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 17, 2012 Super User Posted February 17, 2012 Spool bearings. Quote
