bassinKS Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 what reel ratio do you prefer for your jig reel and why? and what is your jig setup? rod? reel? looking at a revo sx and cant decide on 6:4:1 or 7:1:1 for my jig rod Quote
Super User deep Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 Powell Max 753 FB jig rod (TW special), Citica 201D (7.1:1), 55 lb Daiwa Samurai for jigs bigger than 3/8 oz. Quote
John G Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 1/2oz and up I use a Loomis MBR 844 IMX with a Shimano Calais 100A....5.8:1 3/8oz and below I use a Loomis BCR803 GLX with a Shimano Curado 50E.....6.4:1 Quote
Red Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I use a Lamiglas Excel 7116C with a Revo SX-L for flippin jigs and a Lamiglas Excel 735C with a Revo S-L for football jigs. As for the ratio, the S is normal 6.4:1 I think and the SX is a 7. As far as I am concerned I do not notice a bit of difference regarding the ratios. Same goes for throwing Spinnerbaits with a Revo S-L or my Quantum Burner. I pay zero attention to ratios on my reels. Quote

Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 Zillion TDZLN100SHA (7:1 ratio) on Zillion 7' MH rod w/ 15 lb Trilene 100% fluoro I had zero confidence in jigs until I started throwing them on this rig. I always hear that a few Loomis models are the "standard" for jig fishing, and while I've never tried them, they must be phenomenal if they're better than the Zillion rod. I absolutely love this combo! Quote
drew4779 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 7' MH Fenwick HMG with a Shimano Chronarch E7. I went with the E7 because its easier to slow down your retrieve than speed it up when the situation calls for it. Quote
scrutch Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 RW is that going from flipping to swim jigs (top to bottom)? Is that what you use them for almost exclusively? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 A little faster reel is nice for taking up line when the fish swims right at you with the jig. Either way you won't go horribly wrong. FWIW, I'd scew the budget toward the rod for "feel" techniques like jigs and plastics. Pick up the highest quality 7' MH/F rod your budget can tolerate. 1 Quote

Fat-G Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I'd have to get a custom done if I wanted to get something that I considered perfect, especially since it would be longer than 8'. Any high speed reel will work, I have an E7 that works well. As for the line, I'd probably want at a minimum 25# flouro. Quote
