pwall90 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 i was wondering since there are a few gun nuts on here could you tell me for target shooting only do you think reloads are ok? i was thinking about picking up a few bags of them at my local gun show next week i know most of the people that run the booths and reload the ammo so there good people. but what would be the pros and cons and its going to be shot through a springfield armory xd45 4in Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 I shoot handloads 100% of the time out of my 4'' XD45 I will only load (230gr) FMJ. I don't like to touch the lead if I don't have to. Unique or Universal are decent powders for 45 ACP, I'd be curious what powder they use? Maybe we need FMJ Sinkers to fish with? 1 Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 I suppose I should really address the second part of you post Pros= Price & if you reload specifically for your gun you can develope a far more accurate round than can be store bought. Cons= A 45 ACP CASE IS VERY LARGE IN COMPARISON TO THE VOLUME OF POWDER IT NEEDS MAKING IT EASY TO DOUBLE CHARGE!!! This means you can easily add the powder to the case twice by accident. A lot of rounds like say a 223 will not hold 2 loads and sometimes need the powder to be compressed by seating the bullet to get enough powder in the case but the 45 can actually get a double charge and not look over full. pwall90 Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 ok thanks and as for price a firend of mine and his dad go to the gun show every year and he buy a bag of 500 once fired for about 20 dollars , wich im hoping they still are at the same price but you know how things go. but thanks for you help iv been reading everywhere that there not worth the money because of the possibility of to much poder in some and not enough in the other. to me there is a slim chance with even new ammo it could happen but hopefully wont. ctf58 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I've shot 1000's of rounds of 9mm "gun show ammo" through my S&W 5904 and never had a problem plinking. I've reloaded .44mag for my ruger carbine for better accuracy. I also reload my own 30-06 and it is way better accuracy than any factory load. Only problem I've ever had was reloaded 12 gauge shells. I've had several with no powder in them. they go pop and then you have shot all in the inter-workings of your gun. Check "Cheaper than Dirt.com" sometimes they have deals worth looking at in cheap ammo for plinking. Quote
pwall90 Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 i actually have shopped from cheaper than dirt and the selection they have combined with midway usa is amazing Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 2, 2012 Super User Posted March 2, 2012 My reloads are good for anything from targets to ccw carry. Now as far as shelf life i'm shooting my 45acp ammo i reloaded back in 1977 today and it all goes bang too. I have military surplus ammo from 1937 that all goes bang too. I keep all my ammo in 50cal ammo sealed cans so there dry. I keep my primers in 50cal ammo cans too. I reload all my ammo besides buying new ammo when its on sale and clearance too. Back when the 45acp fmj ammo was $6.72 a box of 50rds i stocked up on it. Today the same ammo is $20 a box of 50rds. Quote
pwall90 Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 i know its rediculous how the prices keep changing im waiting for them to go up again . what i cant understand is a lot of places that sell reloaded ammo online are wanting same price as for new ammo Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 7, 2012 Super User Posted March 7, 2012 BTW; My reloads are exactly the ballastics i'm going by when i load them. The new ammo isn't loaded to the specs the manutacturer is saying most of the time. Unless its advertised as being hotter ammo. But each round i reload is exactly the same too. I reload a lot of the leadcast bullets now too. I purchase all my lead bullets from www.snscasting.com he is affordable and has fast shipping too. For plinking and target shooting the leadcast is hard to beat its more affordable. You can also purchase used brass to reload and pick up a LEE Pro 1000 progressive press and put out the 45acp like popcorn fully assembled ready to shoot. Its the cheapest way i can reload. Quote
