Scope Suggestions Please

I was just given a Remington Model '88 .308 cal for my birthday. My dad and my brother both shoot them. I used the '88 for the last two years as well and decided I liked it. I am looking to buy a scope for it but I'm unsure of what I want. I hunt the woods of central PA and North Central WV too. I also hunt with some friends where I can easily see deer over 400+ yards. Any suggestions on what scope to put on my '88. I don't have a ton of money to go spending on a scope. Thanks for your suggestions in advance!

I love that gun. It's the first gun I ever hunted with. I hope you get as much use out of yours as I did my fathers. The best rifle scopes that I've found that won't break the bank are Nikko Sterling scopes. Mine is solid and the optics are better than any high end scope I've ever used. I'll check them out for sure. Thanks. The gun shoots really well. We make our own reloads so I'm used to having less than a half inch at 100 yds. Just need a scope that can help me make it happen.

For a good cheep scope I'd look at BSA or NC Star.

3x9 or 4x12 should work well but I don't advise anyone to shoot much beyond 200yds. It just gets too iffy beyond that.

Bushnell banner dusk/dawn. Awesome value, can be found for 80 bucks. It gathers light AMAZINGLY. You can count the points on deer 300+ yards out that you can barely tell are there with your eyes. I cant say enough good things about these scopes. It unseated a $500 leupold on my model 700.

Thanks fellas. I will be looking at all those suggestions. I was at the Eastern Outdoor Sportsman Show in Harrisburg last weekend and picked up some info on different scopes. Hawke had some interesting scopes, but I don't know much about them. I appreciate all the help on this. Thank you

Do you mean a Winchester Model 88? Those are some great rifles! If you're still looking for a scope, I suggest looking at Weaver scopes. I've had a Weaver K series on my .270 WIN for a dozen years, and I love it!

In my experience hunting in the woods of central PA a 3-9 power is fine in the woods. This still gives you enough mag. if you hunt the edge of a farm field, but I can't remember the last time I shoot a deer at more than maybe 75 yds here. Check out Bushnell and Simmons for decent economical scopes

Yes sorry it is a winchester. My previous PA woods rifle was a remington .30-30. I guess I have it still on my mind. I was looking at bushnell scopes, and that is what is on my fathers. I hunt in WV too on farms and I generally don't get shots under 150 yards. This past year the closest shot I could have taken was 207 yds and the farthest being around 415yds. I just kinda want a scope that can give me a good site picture out that far.

Ditto on the bushnell banner scopes. They do offer a bushnell banner with the BDC (bullet drop compisation). You can adjust it out to 500yds with no error. I have two older bushnell scopes with this feature that i purchased back in '94. One is on my rem 700 in 338win mag. and its holding up to this day its still like new. I like having the BDC feature just incase i see that trophy of a lifetime at a farther distance i can still make that shot accurately. The banner scope still comes with the BDC at an affordable price. I'd like to get one for my sons 30-06 too. I do find my bushnell scopes to be clearer in low light conditions too. I still can see what i'm shooting long after the sun goes down. Bill

I really like the Redfield Revolution scopes. Hard to beat for the money, imo. And they come with Leupold's lifetime warranty.

I would suggest a Luepold VX3 3-9 power scope. Cheap scopes are just that cheap. The clarity of the glass and lack of any form of distortion, the ability to stay zeroed and warranty make them worth the money. I have used Tasco, Simmons, BSA, Bushnell and Nikon and I don’t think they compare. I am currently replacing all my scopes with Leupolds including the one on my crossbow.

Just to let you guys know, those that are interested. I ended up getting a bushnell banner. It seems like a pretty stout scope and I pretty much stole it for the price of $45. It was used twice by a guy who wanted a "bigger name" scope, a Luepold I believe that was something in the $600-700 range. I was all too happy to take that off his hands for that price. I'll let you know how it shoots on top of my .308 model '88.
