jmed999 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I'm looking for a rod and reel for an Alabama rig. Any suggestions on how to get both for less than $100? Thanks! Quote

lowtones Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I'm curious what you ended up with. I have a Fenwick 8'6" rod that I used from shore with a bait casting reel for salmon up in Alaska. I'm not a tournament fisherman so I don't have to comply with an 8' rod max. The rod is more than capable but my bass reel is not. I assume you're casting, not trolling the AL rig. Braided line is a must. Let me know what worked for you. Quote
aumdb487 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I threw mine all weekend on a 7' Heavy and Revo. I would just go to your favorite fishing place and look around to see what you can find. the rod doesn't need to be anything special but it should be able to handle something that will end up being around 2 ounces. jmed999 Posted February 14, 2012 Author Posted February 14, 2012 Still looking. I think pretty much any 7 foot heavy rod would work. I'm even thinking about the extra heavy rods. I'll be using 65# braid. Would any baitcasting reel work? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 As long as the rod can handle the total bait weight, and I'm sure one of those Wal -Mart Catfish setups would work great for trolling.... Trolling indeed. Unless you have some relevant advice, this isn't the place for a debate - there are other threads in play for that. This is a simple question with simple opinions for answers. BTW, the rig is cast and retrieved, like any other moving bait, not trolled. jmed, as long as the bait falls in the rod's ratings, and heavy/fast action rod should do the trick. I use a 7-9 H/F swimbait rod. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I use 200 E7 and 8' Heavy Swimbait rod w/ 65# braid. I tried an E5, but when fishing shallower, i had a hard time keeping the baits where I needed them. Its much easier to reel slower than it is faster when trying to keep that much weight off the bottom. Quote
zip pow Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Just be sure what ever reel you get has s high poundage drag besides that whatever you like Quote
BigBrotherThunda Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 You could get a 7ft heavy action berkley lightning rod, and pair it with an abu round reel (not a C series though for this $$$) and probably come in under 100, and have a functional setup to handle the weight of the rig and plenty of line/spool space. 1 Quote

Chad L Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Like others have stated 7-7'6 heavy action with a used Abugarcia 6500 c3, should easily be able to find throughout all the classifieds. Quote
Diggy Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I tried fishing one with the m/h setup in my avatar on 65# braid...it was far from graceful....the yum rig will sit in my bag for a while Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I'll second the ABU Ambassadeuer and a swimbait rod rated for the total you want to throw. As stated any heavy rod will work but a swimbait rod will have a better tip for casting than a pool cue flipping rod. Quote
jmed999 Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 By swimbait rod do you guys mean a crank bait rod? I dont know what a swim bait rod is. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 16, 2012 Super User Posted February 16, 2012 By swimbait rod do you guys mean a crank bait rod? I dont know what a swim bait rod is. There are rods specifically made for throwing big swimbaits not cranking rods though Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 16, 2012 Super User Posted February 16, 2012 My "small" swimbait rod is a SC 4C79HF, a 7-9 heavy power, fast action rod. It's got a fast tip, and it's heavy, but it's not a moderate action stick like my flippin stick. The top 3rd has some flex to it, and it really doesn't feel like a heavy until there's a fish on. When you get into the bottom half the rod, it moves big fish fast, but it's got to be bent to do it. My flipping stick only bends under great stress. Quote
