This is directly from Shimano's website....

"In terms of the amount of line retrieved per crank, the Chronarch E7 reels pull in 30-inches, the E6 reels pull in 27-inches, while the E5 reels are capable of 23-inches.

After running some tests you actually have to crank the handle over twice to reach these specs with every model.

Are Asian inches larger than US inches!

Did you measure with the spool full of line or empty?.........................Al

I was just re-spooling all my reels and it didn't seem like I was getting 30 inches on the E7. So, on the next E7 I measured out 30 inches of taut Dragon Call, one crank brought in about 15 inches, 2 cranks brought in the full 30. I repeated with filling bare spools with Super Slick 8 and got about the same results give or take a few inches with the E6's and E5, needing two revolutions of the reel handle to get the specs they claim.

IPT is simply circumference of line on spool(Pi*2*Radius or Diameter*3.14~) times gear ratio. so (gear ratio)X(Diameter)X(3.14~)= IPT. Most companies probably measure IPT when the line is inline with the top of the spool. IPT is different on each turn of the handle during the cast, as the spool diameter is smaller at the start of the cast and increases as line is taken in.

I have also noticed that IPT actual is less then advertised, which is most likely because i don't quite fill the spool all the way up.

Out of curiosity I just tried it on a Curado E7 and it came out to 30" on a full spool.

It's always done on full spool. IPT is worthless as a measurement on a low or empty spool, one of the primary reasons you should keep a spool as full as possible is that is when the reel is performing at its most efficient.

pretty much every reel i have ever checked was about an inch less than what the mfgs advertise. i couldn't tell you exactly how much less than full i keep my spools but i'm sure someone really good at math can!

A turn in IPT is 360* turn of the handle crank. Sounds like the OP is making 1/2 cranks resulting 1/2 IPT.

If your spools are filled to 95% capacity, you should not expect have attain manufacturer's specs. If the IPT is 30" at full spool, you ought to expect an IPT of about 28.5". Ha! just ribbin' you. :eyebrows: But do make that video. I think it would be cool to see.

On a side note, I tested this on my curado bsf, 101d and 201DHSV a while back and the IPTs for all were spot on.

x2 on the above - Just measured one of my reels a couple days ago for another reason and it was right on...but I'm a spool overfiller. Over or underfilling basically acts as a way to change relative gear ratio.
