Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 13, 2012 Super User Posted February 13, 2012 I'm 6' and weigh an even 220. I go to the gym 5 days a week so I've built up some muscle. Now it's time to lean out. I'm going to start juicing (as in vegetables and fruits, not roids) which should help me get down to a lean 190. That is my goal to be at for the summer time. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted February 13, 2012 Super User Posted February 13, 2012 Even healthy food is unhealthy if you eat too much of it. Formula is simple, eat less calories and burn some more. The diet and workout industry takes in billions of dollars per year, they all say pretty much the same thing, eat less food, control the foods that produce fat and get off your butt........It isn't easy, but it's that simple. I say that all the time...Yet, people still spend billions on certain food that helps you lose weight, etc. Cycling does wonder for the soul. And your weight!! For me, fishing is fun, but I don't find it as a great stress reliever as it once was. Cycling and backpacking makes me feel better and keeps me healthy. (until I crash my bike.) Cycling, backpacking, and fishing. What a life. For bonus point, do some backpacking in the Smoky Mountain while carrying a fly rod for backcountry trout fishing. They see no pressure (unless you count the bears) and the hardcore fishermen are not always willing walk that far or do that kind of walk. The hardest hiking for backcountry trout fishing will be the Linville Gorge in Western North Carolina. It's not for the faint of heart, but the Linville river is worth all the work hiking up and down the mountain to get to it. Edit; I forgot to add this link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linville_Gorge_Wilderness Read the Hunting/Fishing section. My hiking partner carried his rod with him when I visited this place in November. He caught one. I've been looking for some rod/reel combo to carry backpacking. Quote
tholmes Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I'm joining the party. 190 was my weight when I got married 8 years ago. Now I'm an even 230 and my wife don't cook, lol. I went from a fit, college athlete to a lazy, obese pile of dog do-do. I hate my appearance and I hate myself for allowing me to become the way I am. My wife bought me the P90X workout system over 6 months ago and I haven't even opened the box. My wife started the gym and thought she was going to die after her 1st cardio workout. She now goes 5 days a week and loves it. While typing this, I ate my last peanut-butter and jelly sandwich and drank my last soda. As of right now, February 11, 2012 at 9:41 pm, this will be my last post as an obese pile of dog do-do. I'm taking my life back and puting a new rod and reel into the hands of a kid. Peace, Obese pile of dog do-do Good on ya! I wish you all the best. I'm in the midst of that process now. I've gone from 270 a year ago to 230 now. I've kinda hit a plateau during the winter since I'm not as active, but I'm looking to lose another 30 lbs. or so this spring and summer. Tom Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 Thanks Eric. My son will be 4 next month and I'll be 45 in August and retire in 4 years. I have got to drop some weight and get back in to somewhat decent shape. I haven't had any soda or ceffeine today and now have a major headache from the the withdrawl. Sodas pack on a ton of weight and I drink about 3 cans a day plus 16oz of sweet tea. I also LOVE ice cream. A 1/2 gallon lasts me 2 sittings. I actually eat pretty good/healthy meals, but I also eat a sht load of junk like ice cream, M&M's, PnutButter and jelly, and chips.. My plan is to lay off the ice cream, soda, tea and chips for 30-45 days and see if I can drop a few pounds. Once I drop a few pounds then I'll start with lite exercising. I'm the same way. I eat what's generally considered a well balanced and healthy meal. I just get nailed by the junk food. I haven't really put on much weight in the last few years, I haven't lost any either though. With the physical work I do at the office, I get in plenty of exercise. I just need to eliminate some of the bad junk I'm putting in. I'm horrible whenever I get home and plant myself to watch a little tv. Simple fact is, I'm a big dude with a big frame. I'm never going to be 150 pounds. My (lofty) goal is to drop 30 pounds by my birthday in August. I know what I need to do, I just need to do it. Thankfully I learned how to really take care of myself when I was a gym rat in the Army. I just got very lazy after I got out of the service. I'm hoping to retire early in another 7 to 10 years and would like to be in good physical condition to really enjoy it. Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 Shoot I'm building up for hard times. Figure I can go a month without food. I was 185 lbs and 6ft 2 for years. Then after they cut on my back I dropped down to 6ft 1" and up to 220. After way to many years of not being able to walk to help burn off the food. I jumped to 260. Right now down to 252 and still working on it. Last trip to my heart doctor, His words were if you don't get down under 200 lbs your not going to live many more years... So I have way to much to live for, Like seeing the grand kids growing up. Plus way to many days on the water left. Pete I've had four spine surgeries and I can attest that loosing the weight will help with any residual pain you may have. I know that when I got up around 240 my back hurt all the time, so I dropped back down to 220 been down to 195 a couple of times but can't stay there, anyway loosing the weight helped my pain and mobility. I can't exercise much, can't walk that far, but my at rest heart rate is still around 70 which isn't bad for a pack a day smoker, blood pressure is great, and cholestorol is low. There are more factors than the abitrary BMI chart. The BMI is a bunch of crap, unless you want to be on the verge of starvation, I think my BMI weight is around 175, I haven't weighed that much since high school, I would have to loose muscle mass to get that low. The scale is outdated and unrealistic, when I was in the service they wanted to put my supervisor on the "fat boy program" he was 75lbs overweight, what they didn't know was that he was a body builder (former Maryland champ) had a 52 inch chest and massive arms, he was about 5' 7" after his fat boy program review, the doc decided that his weight was fine, lol. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 Well, I have a little different take on it. I think my weight is fine, I just need to be 3" or 4" taller! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 14, 2012 Super User Posted February 14, 2012 That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Hey Man, stop getting on the scale while holding those mutant bass ! A-Jay Quote
scrutch Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes. From "Cheers"... Everyone in bar (as Norm walks in): "Norm!" Sam Malone: "What cha up to Norm?" Norm (walking quickly to his barstool): "My ideal weight if I were nine feet tall!" Quote

Part of my issues is, 7 stents and a bad back plus cancer. So been rode hard and put up wet. Last Round of Med-Dose pack or Steoilds put 20 lbs on me in 2 weeks. I hate these things but they do get me back to moving. I had been down foro 5 months. Even to the point I did not driver for 3 months. Just not getting back to where I can walk again 4 times per day. Meds for my heart also add weight. So I'm fighting a battle that is hard to beat. But I will get below 200 again or die fat. Pete Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted February 16, 2012 Super User Posted February 16, 2012 Hang in there Pete, I couldn't imagine how impossibly hard it must be right now. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted February 17, 2012 Super User Posted February 17, 2012 Yes, I do weigh more than I should, but nothing unhealthy. I'm 5'11", 215, and have a big build to start with, coupled with a small stomach and my butt ( you may call it, a "Donk") However, From Now until June I steadily lose weight, and by the end of that time I will be around 205. Keeping in mind, I have conditioning and practice for lacrosse 5 days a week for 3 hours. Then until that time again I slowly gain weight. This season i'm really trying to get rid of some of this flubber, instead of getting stronger like I have for the last two years. More cardio, (Which I must say I hate, my mile time is terrible at about 9 minutes.) is on the way for me. That also means I have to diet, which is hard being a kid, because Taco Bell is my noms, and Chipotle is my more expensive noms. But hopefully at the end of this season I can get down to about 200. I figure that is my ideal weight. What I look like right now for perspective is, you can see my 6 pack, its just got some fat on it so its not very defined. However, it's clearly there. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 17, 2012 Super User Posted February 17, 2012 BC... sounds like you've got a good plan. I also have 6 pack abs, but for some reason you cannot see them through my "flubber." Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 17, 2012 Super User Posted February 17, 2012 As much of a problem as excess weight is where the fat is loacated on your body. People that put too much fat on around their heart, increase their risk. Fat deposits from the waist down are less of a problem. Quote
