tugsandpulls Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 out of these 3 which one do you shop at most and think has the best prices? Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 BPS for selection Cabelas for covience, it's 10 minutes from the house Dicks only if someone here says there's a good sale Quote
Brian Needham Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 hate to list something not listed..........tackelwarehouse. I go to bass pro shop, look come home and order. Though I do spend more than my share at BPS. and I am waiting a dicks sale notification from here on the boards.....that said, I never been to my local dicks. Quote
jkarol24 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Dicks for sales and quick runs BPS on RARE occasions for crazy sales (about an hour from my house) Not a Cabelas in sight My favorite is Gander Mtn for selection Online can be great as well, I buy most of my rods online especially after a new model comes out and the old models go on sale Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Cabelas is my first choice and 10 min from my house. Bps for the XPS lures Dicks when I'm in the area Quote
KCL655321 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Cabela's is my first choice, as I've found great deals in their bargain cave & really like their name brand stuff. BPS is alright for sales & has great selection, but if it's not onsale, it's usually priced on the high side outside of a few of their house branded stuff. Dicks & Gander I'll stop in when I'm around them, which isn't very often. Not too impressed with either, but they're not too bad either. I do really like the fact you can order online from Gander & get free shipping, which is more than I can say for the ridiculous shipping prices from Cabela's & BPS. Scheel's is probably where I go to the most, since it's the only sporting goods store that has any sort of decent selection around me, since Dunham's is worthless for fishing stuff. TW is my favorite for ordering online, along with Amazon, which has either ridiculously high pricing or ridiculously low pricing, no in between. Needless to say, I don't buy high. Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 of those listed, ive spent more at BPS. i stop at the one in Richmond, VA on my way to NC and theres one even closer to my house in Maryland. Never been to a Cabelas, and havent been to a Dicks Sporting Goods in a few years and never bought anything fishing related there. i really like going to Gander Mountain though. They dont have the selection of lures BPS does, but they do have a much better inventory of hooks and sinkers. BPS terminal tackle selection is severely lacking. I stopped by the Richmond BPS a couple weeks ago on a trip back from NC and i couldnt even find rage craws either, i looked down every plastics aisle 3 times. either im blind or they didnt have any, ive bought them there before. I like the Baltimore store much better in some aspects... Quote
d3bf48 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I only go to dicks for sales. I stop in Cabelas and BPS a lot but usually only buy something if it's on sale. Usually shop around online for better deals Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 Down in S FLA its all about BPS. Selection, selection, selection. Dicks has nothing in comparison. We dont have Cabelas. Also, I have a BPS Visa card that allows me major points on purchases, so far in the past year Ive got around $200 in points. Quote
msolorio Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 probably dicks only because bps is a lil over 100 miles away and there is no cabelas anywhere around me. other than that im usually at the local tackle shop, valley rod and gun and once in awhile fishermans warehouse. also order stuff online from tw. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 Well, the two DSG's by me have terrible selections, The Cabelas (,>50mi) has more stocked goods than my closest BPS (>120mi) so I'm going with Cabelas. It's a a shame, I've been to the BPS in harrisburg 3 times and they still don't carry a decent selection of St Croix rods. The Cabelas closer to me has a bigger rod selection them too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 As said above, Pecker's when they have sales as their selection is limited. Cabela's via catalog as we do not have one around Richmond, Virginia. Selection is acceptable.. Bass Pro Shops for the fun of shopping and their selection is acceptable. Gander Mountain for some good prices but extremely limited selection. Green Top for excellent selections but a little on the pricy side. Specialty manufacturers, like the ones on this Forum, are the best even if their prices are higher than the run of the mill manufactuers. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 TW>>>>> Fisherman's Warehouse > BPS (closer but most things not on sale more expensive than anywhere else) > Cabelas (only up for 1-2 trips/year to Reno) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dick's (Modesto store pretty much worthless for fishing gear) Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Bps is an hour away although I've been there I wasn't to impressed. Couldnt tell ya how for cabelas is Don't think I have one within 3 hrs. Dicks and sportsmanship warehouse were my only options until............ Drum roll please ..........ACADEMY!!! Came to town....now about 90% of my fishing stuff is bought there... Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 Dicks has the best prices, and there is usually something on sale. Their best bargains are two packs of Yamamoto products for ten dollars. BPS is around eight bucks for a single pack. Dicks regular price is about six-fifty. They have reasonably good selection of fishing products. Nowhere near as much as BPS, but sufficient for plastics, jigs, hard baits and spinnerbaits. Their line selection isn't bad either. No Cabelas or Gander Mountain stores anywhere near our vicinity. Quote
tholmes Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Out here on the desolate plains of central Kansas, Dick's and Gander Mountain are 130 miles away, Cabela's and BPS are 250 miles, so I don't make it to any of them very often. I buy a lot of stuff on-line from Barlow's, Jann's and Cabela;s, the rest comes from Wal-Mart. Tom Quote
JigMe Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I will buy most of my bass gears on tackle warehouse, except for Zoom which I can get from wal-mart for 99 cents during sales. For my trout fishing or Pan fish gears, I prefer wal-mart or BPS (BPS runs some crazy sales from time to time). Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 Like THolmes, I'm no where close to any major outlet. BPS is the closest and that is a three hour drive. Most of my stuff is purchased online. BPS for bass fishing, Cabelas for walleye gear, and several other site sponsors for their specialties. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 I support local Mom and Pop stores as much as possible. My favorites are R&L Tackle, South of Covington, GA and the other is Aberdeen Bait and Tackle in Aberdeen, NC. I pick up some odds and ends at Academy Sports because it is so close but they don't carry my favorite things. I have four BPSs that I could go to but they are all at least 2 1/2 hours away. They are about to build another one in GA but it's still 2 hours away. I've got a Dicks close but it's on the wrong side of town and the prices aren't worth the trip. Quote
crankbait2009 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I am very close to BPS and Dicks but I love BPS, so that would be my first choice. Cabelas I just get there catalogs to browse through. (not one close enough). Dicks, I go there if I HAVE to or if they are having those 50% off sales on fishing lures. BPS all the way. Quote
Gangley Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 If I have to pick one of those three, it would be Gander because its closest. However, all three are WAY over priced and I refuse to pay extra $$$ at any of them considering I have 2 Academy's within 5 minutes of me that are cheaper in every department. I just cant justify spending an extra $1.50 per bag of plastics, especially when I'm usually buying atleast 10 bags of plastics to go along with a bunch of other things. The only thing the big three are better at is having a larger selection of the more expensive lures such as the Lucky Crafts, Spro's, etc. If I need some of those, then I have no other choice and thats fine. If what I need is something I can find elsewhere though, you better believe I'm gonna go elsewhere because there is a 99 percent chance that its cheaper elsewhere. Quote
Shad_Master Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 There are Cabellas and BPS stores about equal distance from me, but I will go to Cabellas only if I have to. Why? Because I have gotten such bad information from them on more than one occasion - example: I was looking for Power Worms one day when the Fishing Manager told me, "Oh, Berkely has stopped making Power Baits - they are only making GULP! now". There is a Dick's even closer to me, but they have such a limited selection of fishing stuff, it isn't worth the effort. Quote
Jim_M Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 BPS Sportsman's Warehouse Cabela's Liar's Korner The Hook Up * Wally Worlds Dick's (they're here but I don't care for them) * might be the best...ever. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 Unfortunately, we don't have any "Mom & Pop" places around here anymore. They've all gone to make room for the bigger box stores. Of the three retailers listed in the original post, I would go to Cabela's first as it is not that far away from me (about 45 min.) and the selection is excellent. Dick's is only about 20 min. from me and has some great buys - occasionally! And it's convenient if I need something fast. BPS is almost 2 hrs. from me and their shipping cost is way too high; although I like their tackle selection better. Quote
