Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 9, 2012 Super User Posted February 9, 2012 http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-120208-chicago-city-sticker-controversy-video,0,2616961.premiumvideo I mean really people, come on. I fail to see the problem with the design. If you look hard enough at most anything you can find fault with it. I guess its symbology in itself that's the problem. Don't use a star in any design. 5points represent one gang, 6points represents another. Oh, and dont use hands either. No matter how they are drawn, I'm sure there is a gang somewhere in the city that throws there set up with that particular gesture. In no way do those hands even resemble pitchforks. People absolutely sicken me. Hold up! The new design has people dressed entirely in red, blue, and black. That represents 3 gangs that I know for a fact reside in that city. I would say make them black and gray, but I'm sure that's a gangs colors also. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 9, 2012 Super User Posted February 9, 2012 Welcome to Chicago The heart and the baby blue colors are in question also, the position of the hands. The kicker, from what I understand is the teenage designers FB page with him in full gang colors(so I hear) The street gang the video is referring to has a wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia....Latin_Disciples If you read the "Identifiers" you can see why there is concern. Here is the sticker design http://www.chicagotr...0,5432577.story Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 9, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 9, 2012 I just don't see a horned heart. Maybe an antlered heart at the most. Didn't know anything about him being all "G'd" out on Facebook. I would like to see the pictures of that. Still I just think it is coincidence and nothing more. I could be wrong though. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 To answer your query in a word: YES! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 At face value I see nothing wrong with the flag. Not being a Chicago resident and being unaware of what is really going on there, plus not knowing the background of the artist, reduces my credibility to zero. What I think doesn't matter, IMO this is a Metro Chicago issue and for those residents to deal with. 1 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 I guess what makes this controversy is the kid goes to a troubled youth school. If the kid didn't impose what's questioned that just shows how much faith we have on counciling youth to better themselves BUT like what's already been said, don't know anything else about him besides him getting rescued by firefighters over a candlefire at the age of four. Super User retiredbosn Posted February 11, 2012 Super User Posted February 11, 2012 As an ex-federal agent, I can attest that there are so many handsigns and color variations related to gang symbols that it is difficult to design something that could not be gang related. There are literally thousands of gangs across the country and in the prison system, each has their own colors and hand symbols. It was a full time job just trying to keep up with all of it. As soon as we would get a new handbook on they symbols and colors, it was outdated. IMO just another knee jerk reaction that may or may not have a basis in truth. So the student is in a troubled youth program at school. Could be that he is honestly trying to make a change in his life, but those surrounding him can't see it and automatically assume the worse. From what I see there it isn't gang related just a bunch of crap. Quote
GLADES Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 The design is just a product of his imagination which has been programmed by his living environment. If there are gang signs there, it probably was not deliberate. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 13, 2012 Super User Posted February 13, 2012 Latest news. After they said the "troubled" kids design couldn't be used, they offered it to the runner up, a teenage girl. As of this mornings news, she has withdrawn her picture because she and her family are being harassed. The city will now hire someone to design a sticker. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 13, 2012 Author Super User Posted February 13, 2012 And thusly the plot thickens....... Quote
