james 14 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I've used them a few times with moderate results but I want to gain a little more confidence in it. The problem I have is the bait usually just sits on the bottom behind the weight. It doesn't seem to matter how long of a leader I use or how I work it unless I really pop it up off the bottom. So my question is: Is this the way the bait is supposed to work? I guess I could use a floating worm but everything I read about this technique rarely says anything about the need for it. 1 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted February 8, 2012 Super User Posted February 8, 2012 Well, if you fish from the back of the boat, you can probably outfish the front seat "trolling" a C-rig with a Rage Tail Eeliminator! Quote
Fishing-Vol Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 What line are you using for a leader? Floro sinks, mono floats. Quote
zip pow Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I c-rig a floating jerk bait on deep river ledges something you mite should try Quote
msolorio Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 always use a mono leader. your bait wont exactly be floating up a foot off the bottom but itll definantly ride up a bit and have a different action of course than say a t-rig. i won a tourney that last 2 hours on a c-rig on rocky points while everyone else was drop shotting. its a great way to get finicky fish and catch a limit. zip, i never thought about runnin a jerk bait on the end of a c rig, ill have to give that a shot. james 14 Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 What line are you using for a leader? Floro sinks, mono floats. And there's the problem. I'll start using mono and see how the action changes. I had, actually, thought about using a jerkbait but didn't consider using a hard jerkbait. Quote
lmoore Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 What line are you using for a leader? Floro sinks, mono floats. Not quite true. Mono also sinks. It's significantly less dense than flouro (I think the sink rate of similiar diameter flouro is like 5x), so it will definitely help getting your bait off the bottom, but braid is the only line that actually floats. I wasn't aware of that property of braid until just recently, but for a true "floating" property, briad i the only line that offers that. Quote
zip pow Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Now that y'all are interested in the c-rig jerkbait i'll tell y'all the rest of this top secret idea i've been using instead of a egg sinker I use a 3/4 oz football jig I slide it up the line then add my bead and swivel. Leader and the jerkbait Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 9, 2012 Super User Posted February 9, 2012 Nice! I've heard that one but still ain't done it! Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 9, 2012 Super User Posted February 9, 2012 Quick sidenote: A bait that conatins salt will also ride the bottom more... Quote

Leader and the jerkbait A Strike King jig with the horizontal line tie works the best for a Carolina rig weight. Also break off the lip of a jerkbait so it won't dive when you pull it (less hangups). Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 9, 2012 Super User Posted February 9, 2012 I've had days using a C-rig were a worm that floats really worked well and I've also had times that if the bait was getting to the bottom it wouldn't get bit so you can try both and see what works. Really though it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference most of the time as the weight being dragged across the bottom is what gets the attention of the fish and then they see the bait lagging behind and eventually bite it. A senko on a C-rig is a perfect exampple, even though they sink, they are very effective on a C-rig and even a sinking bait like the senko will come off the bottom a little bit depending on how far you drag the bait at one time. Super User eyedabassman Posted February 10, 2012 Super User Posted February 10, 2012 I have tryed this many times and it works great. I use a C D 7( floater ), and try a tube bait with a ear plug or strafoam and it will make the tube float. Quote
bwell Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Maybe try something like this Got the video from Bird Dog. Quote
