I'm having trouble removing the side plate bearing in my Daiwa HSTA. I've tried using the spool to try and pry it out while rocking it side to side but no luck. It seems to be in there pretty snug. What do you guys use to remove it?

Loosen the thumb screw on the crank side completely.

Turn the palm side plate down (CCW on a righty, CW on a lefty).

And it should pop off.

Press the thumb bar to release the spool.

Those bearing packs can be a PIA to get out.

I use a bearing puller that I make.

Take a T-pin bend the point about an 1/16" or so into an L shape.

Place the bent tip through the bearing center under the bearing and lift, you will propbably have to do this in a differant spot as you lift around under the bearing. Try it, this has worked for me for 27 yrs. of servicing reels/bearings..

Geez, didn't quite read the post right, LOL. What RM said. They get sticky, and can take a few minutes.

You can also break a q-tip in half and use the hard end to pry it out.

I have had to put a bath towel folded in two on a flat, firm surface and lightly bang the cover upside down till the bearing gets loose. Make sure your not doing it too hard, and make sure your banging it flat so you don't damage the inside of the side cover.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm trying the t pin trick but its still giving me a hard time. Arrgggh!

Probably some rust gathered around the the bearings recess, try adding a drop or two of oil just around the edge of the recess and outer edge of the bearing. It might help in the losening of the pack in the recess... We have the ability to submerge the parts in our cleaner tank, and, it will loosen the bearing packs for removal.

Try Q-tip trick

remove just a little of the cotton at time, insert and make sure it snug fit. If too tight keep remove the cotton until you can insert the whole q-tip.

P.S. That q tip that fit in bearing hole is good to clean inside pinion shaft as well.
