I’m trying to reorganize my crankbaits in new boxes as I just picked up a lot of new Rapalas at Dicks on sale. How do you store them, by depth or size? One box for shallows, one for mid depth, and one for deep? What works best for you, I’ve got about 200 so I really need to store them right. Thanks,

Size is always my first then depth and swim pattern.

My way of doing it is broken down into time of year, winter, spring, summer and fall, the ones that work well in fall and winter, I buy 2 of so I will have one for each season as it crosses over, same for the other ones.

200 wow you have a lot of sorting to do lol.

Depth. Size is something I figure out after I learn what depth they are at.

I'm not sure what you mean. By size, I meant mass. You don't have to fish it to figure that out. I have three different rods I use for crankbaits, each for a different weight. By splitting them size, I have one box and one rod ready.

Maybe you meant something else? If so, my mistake...

I go about it differently, most typically because I have a box dedicated to each brand size. For instance, I have a boxes for my Norman Deep Little N's. Then I have Boxes for my DD14's, then DD22's. Same thing in Strike King, 3XD, 5XD, 6XD, and so on. That's storage. For boat boxes I split them to 2 Strike King boxes, a Lucky Craft box, Rapala, and so on. They're organized by size within boxes.

I do a little of both I guess. I have my shallow, medium, deep runners, lipless, but I also have a box of baits that are too small to fish on casting gear that are all different depths, just small or light.

By depth and then by color.

I have all of the Sexy Shad cranks in one box and all KVD llpless in another box.

Jerkbaits have their own boxes as do the Rapalas in sizes 5 and 7.

Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits have their own boxes along with my buzzbaits.

Topwaters go together in one box.

Jigs by size and color with pigs in another box.

Ugly Ducklings have their own box, too.

Clarification

Size can be interpreted multiple ways so to clarify what I should have clarified in the first reply, by size I mean physical size (displaced volume) with included characteristics(style), excluding mass.

Since my skills are lacking in the cranking world, I keep enough cranks to fill 3 plano boxes and try to keep it organized as simply as I can for me: Shallow, Medium, and Deep divers. Once I figure out what depth they are at, I know which box to use and I will then decide on size/style of crank (large flat sided such as a Little John DD, small fat body like a Fat Rap, long slender minnow) to use which is where I normally go WAY wrong, haha.

Shortened up: Since depth is my main concern when cranking, I organize my tackle according to depth and will choose size/action second. I know there are large and small size variants of each action, such as small rattle traps and large rattle traps, and I am by no means a cranking guru and will never pretend to be, but that is how I organize my crankbaits.

Holy crap y'all have alot of cranks!! I have one standard size plano box for squarebills, jerkbaits, and traps, then another for my mid to deep cranks. I like to keep several baits in the size and color that work for me, so I don't have alot of different cranks, just multiples of a few.

Might be the best picture ever, there. One problem, though, you're missing Wagin Hasu!

By type then size...usually plano deep 3700 size boxes. Square bills get a box, lip less cranks in another, medium divers , deep divers, jerkbaits, top waters........etc. You probably get the picture.

Separate boxes, shallow, med, deep, jerkbaits, rattlebaits.

The only time this is a problem is if I fish a tournament in someone elses boat. Then I load boxes just for that event. I also load/unload some boxes for different times of year. Jerkbaits early spring/fall, deep crankbaits hot months, etc

This post has made me think about what I carry. I carry probably 150 different crankbaits and have at least that many in the garage but truely only use a dozen or so, normally. I should probably rethink my own storage.............Al

I store them in boxes by brand and model. Norman DD22's another box for Spro DD, another for Bandit 200's, etc.

Before I actually go out for a tournament I usually raid a couple of these boxes, taking usually 2 of each of my preferred colors each of different brands that I will be using--- 2 sexy spros dd, 2 rootbeer dd22's, 2 etc. etc. etc... I just arrange these in boxes of depth.

So when I'm fishing in a tournament, I usually have a box of several brands for top, shallow, mid, deep, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, terminal, several totes of plastics and jigs.

That keeps my boat lighter, easier to find things, and I still have plenty of choices.

I guess I'm in the same circle as Red, just a few that I know really work in one Plano box. I'm slowly rebuilding my collection. D vorced, D card, D boated, and D tackled. Oh well, back to Wal Mart.. hahaha

What goes in the boat depends on time of year. I use an old Plano Magnum (double-sided) to carry my hard baits.(it will hold about 80) I also use a tool tote that i use on the deck that holds about a dozen hardbaits,spinrb8s, etc. that i plan on using. Probabally 75% stays at home....

I've got my fat free shad tied on and my DD 22 in the box with the lipless cranks.
