OK, so recently, my old greenie, Curado 201b5 started making that awful buzzing/grinding noise when cast big cranks. Opened the side plate checked my brake pins to make sure they were secure (not the brakes, but the pins). Low and behold, the housing holding one pins in is cracked, and the pin was coming out. Caused scoring on the brake case, and Shimano has discontinued the spool assembly. Is anyone willing to sell me a spool assembly for a 201b that's in good shape?

Thanks!

I tried Shimano, and they're the ones that told me they didn't carry the discontinued parts. They referred me to Nutters in Georgia, but they're phones seem to be down. Thanks for the idea though! I was surprised myself that they couldn't help.

Here's a question. Seems like I read that spool BNT1507 is interchangeable with BNT 1531, except that 1531 has a bushing instead of bearing. I would have thought that the bearing would perform better regarding casting, but I'm not a ***, so not sure about that. Anyway, kind of surprised at the cost of those spools! Then again, I've seen fly reel spools that cost > $100!

If you think these spools are expensive then you must never have seen a JDM spool.

Had the same thing happen to my 200B and just pulled the one pin out, wasn't using but 3 brakes anyway,as for the scoring of the brake case, shouldn't hurt a thing cause as you know, the brakes are plastic. It worked for me !

All of the BNT1507 spools are interchangable into right or left hand retrieve B series reels.

The thing you have to be careful about is, is wether or not the reel had a gray bushing or a stainless steel bearing behind the spool engagement pin. Shimano made both in the same B series reels.

Reels with a gray bushing will have a receiver slot for the bushing that is not as deep as with a stainless steel bearing.

I thought you could just swaap the bearing for the bushing, correct? Meaning, if you started with a bearing reel and replaced the spool with a bushing reel, then you want to swap that bushing out and keep the bearing. Or am I wrong? I seem to recall that corecting an issue I had.

Great info, and thanks again! My only concern with pulling the pin out all together is that it may "imbalance" the spool. Sounds like it should work for close in and moderate work, but that reel is my big bomber for deep cranks, so hoping to max out my casting distance at times. I might just experiment to see how it works.

Yes as long as the reel was a bearing supported reel. The bearing will not fit a B series reel with a gray bushing receiver.

BC,

My only concern with pulling the pin out all together is that it may "imbalance" the spool.

There is a fix that I have used since the reels came out in the early 90's.

I use a T-pin bent at the tip (basically my bearing puller). I lift and remove the chrome ring that backs the pins in the hub. I then reinsert the lose pin/s back into their holes. Now I take some super glue gel, place one drop on each pin then replace the ring and press it flush into the hub. I do this by turning the hub with the ring over and press it in. This fix works evry time and is long lasting.....
