jmed999 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Do y'all buy small, medium or large minnows for crappie? Thanks guys! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 1, 2012 Global Moderator Posted February 1, 2012 I like the biggest fathead or ruby red minnows I can find, usually 2.5-3.5 inches long unless I'm tipping a jig with them, then I'll go smaller. Quote
jmed999 Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 I'm not sure what kind of minnows I'm buying. What kind are typically sold at boat shops here in SC? Thanks! Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I get them medium, especially during the spawn and spring....you will run out of a dozen in less than an hour when you're on them. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 2, 2012 Global Moderator Posted February 2, 2012 Not sure what kind they'll have but shiners are more flat with big, shiny scales. Fatheads are more cylinder shaped and look like a small creek chub. Rosy reds are the same size and shape as fatheads, just pink. I don't like shiners because they don't seem to live as long on the hook and the don't struggle as hard as fatheads. Quote
jmed999 Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 I think I have shiners. So what size should I use if they are shiners? Quote
Ern Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Small or medium is what I have always used. We generally just ask for "crappy minnors" and the local store will give you the smallest. If they run out of small then you get a medium. Smaller is better for numbers but you will get everything from 'gills up. A little larger minnow will help eliminate smaller fish. Quote
JigMe Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Medium for bigger results. Agreed. I can go thru a donzen of small minnows under an hour, and catch all kinds of stuff. Once you step up to medium, then the quality went up. Quote
endless Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I'm not sure what the price is in SC but hey if only a couple of bucks why just not go with both? At least nothing hitting the mediums you have the smalls to fall back on or with multiple rods just toss them both out? Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 In the history of fishing, has anybody ever reached into a bucket of minnows and tried to grab the smallest one? Go big. 1 Quote
dave Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 My fishing partner is a light tackle guide on the Potomac river. During the spawn from March to April, he guides for crappie. Four plus inch shiners. Average fish 12-15". Go big. (at least during the spawn) Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Thanks for agreeing Gents...it's def. true...Go Big or Go Home Quote
