I like the biggest fathead or ruby red minnows I can find, usually 2.5-3.5 inches long unless I'm tipping a jig with them, then I'll go smaller.

I'm not sure what kind of minnows I'm buying. What kind are typically sold at boat shops here in SC?

Thanks!

I get them medium, especially during the spawn and spring....you will run out of a dozen in less than an hour when you're on them.

Not sure what kind they'll have but shiners are more flat with big, shiny scales. Fatheads are more cylinder shaped and look like a small creek chub. Rosy reds are the same size and shape as fatheads, just pink. I don't like shiners because they don't seem to live as long on the hook and the don't struggle as hard as fatheads.

Small or medium is what I have always used. We generally just ask for "crappy minnors" and the local store will give you the smallest. If they run out of small then you get a medium.

Smaller is better for numbers but you will get everything from 'gills up. A little larger minnow will help eliminate smaller fish.

Medium for bigger results.

Agreed. I can go thru a donzen of small minnows under an hour, and catch all kinds of stuff. Once you step up to medium, then the quality went up.

I'm not sure what the price is in SC but hey if only a couple of bucks why just not go with both? At least nothing hitting the mediums you have the smalls to fall back on or with multiple rods just toss them both out?

My fishing partner is a light tackle guide on the Potomac river. During the spawn from March to April, he guides for crappie. Four plus inch shiners. Average fish 12-15". Go big. (at least during the spawn)
