I have a 97 Jetta and for some reason, everytime I try and start the car, the alarm sounds. I have unhooked the negative battery cable in hopes of resetting the alarm, which does not fix it.

I have shut all doors and tried starting it, but no luck.....alarm sounds and I have to stick the key in the trunk to turn it off.

I don't understand why it's going off. I can open the doors fine and get in to the trunk, but as soon as i try and start it.....the alarm sounds

What is causing this?

Try looking to see if there is a fuse for it and pull it out. I'm not to good on this subject every cars different and electrical can get tricky especially on them German cars to over engineered but there may be a fuse if so take it out and u should be fine

I checked the fuse box and according to the cover, fuse 13 is labeled "horn" so i tried to pull that one. uh, that didn't do a thing. the service manual says that 11 and 13 would take care of it....pulled both of them but still no luck.

not sure what else to do

Could be a bunch of things really.

Your battery may need to be replaced or something is wrong with the wiring.

Can't really say which unless the car is in front of me.

Go to Autozone or a place like it and have them test the voltage of your battery.

It should be around 12.6 with the car off and somewhere around 14 with the car on.

If it has good voltage, then the problem is with the wiring for the alarm or even a door sensor.

If it was me, I would just disconnect the thing entirely and not worry about it.

I also have a 97 jetta. Are you saying that the alarm goes off without setting it? It sounds as if you set the alarm from the passenger side and then opened the door from the drivers side, thus, never disengaging the alarm. More details will help us diagnose your issue I think. if you have a scan tool you may be able to diagnose it quicker by running a system check.

Sfritr - We recently bought the car so we are not the owners since day 1. We never received a key remote so the only way for us to turn the alarm off is by placing the key in the trunk lock. that turns it off for the time being. Then we are able to open the doors as we wish, but once we put the key in the ignition and try to start it, the alarm sounds. then back to the trunk lock i go, to turn it off.

Is this how most Jettas are? Just odd.

Was thinking about disconnecting the alarm and bypassing it all together. unless i can get this resolved without taking it in to the VW dealer.

My 97 was purchased about a year ago. I bought it as a beater to drive back and forth to work (35mpg). I do not have a key fob either. However, my alarm works by putting the key in the door and turning it clockwise and hold until the car doors lock and the alarm beeps once. Then your doors are locked. In order to unlock from the outside you place the key in the door (front doors only) and turn the key counter clockwise and hold until the locks unlock. You can also lock/unlock from the button on the dash next to the rear defrost. It should be the far right button on the middle dash under the radio.

If you lock the car and try to turn the car on the alarm will sound. Also, if you have the car locked and try to open the trunk it will sound the alarm. Hope this helps.

Join VWVortex forum, it helped tremedously when I owned a Jetta VW, after 4 years it was a love hate relationship, best day I had was selling that fun to drive bucket of bolts.

My kid was a die hard VW guy (active on Vortex) and I recall he had that problem with one of his Jetta's. I sent him your question and will post his response when I get it.
