heavyduty Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Lots of folks promoting cavitrons. Would like to get into more buzzbait fishing this year. What blade color-skirt color pairings do you recommend? I'm sure your choice depends on water clarity, time of day, etc. Let me know your experiences. Thanks, HD Quote
POPRG Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Love the buzzbait! The cavitrons are very well made, comes to plane quickly, and can be reeled in slowly..which is how i fish them most if the time. Great for flanking the edges of weedbeds/timber lay-downs @ dusk to dawn. i use a red blade/black skirt 3/8th ouncer most of the time. Ooh man,why did you have to go and mention buzzbaits, its only january!!!! Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 1, 2012 Super User Posted February 1, 2012 One of the few buzzbaits I can actually catch fish on...LOL I like the white/chartrese gold blade 1/8oz is an awesome smallmouth bait....smallmouths annilate that thing. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 1, 2012 Global Moderator Posted February 1, 2012 3/8 oz black skirt, blade color hasn't really mattered much for me but I usually go with red or black. Quote
Megastink Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Black on cloudy days, white on clear days. Balde color is an afterthought for me. They hone in on the VIBRATION. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Its very simple: Black skirt/Red blades - 3/8 oz. - Low light conditions White skirt/Gold blades - 3/8 oz. All other times This is what I have found to work, so I have no need to change it up! Quote

endless Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I like gold blade White/Chartreuse skirt. Also you might want to try this with the Cavitron or other buzzbaits. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 1, 2012 Super User Posted February 1, 2012 I think I have two of every color combination and size, but I have never fished anything but 3/8 oz black on black. As a matter of fact, I only fish the first Cavitron I got and it's REALLY beat up! The MegaStrike Cavitron is special to me, very special. 1 Quote
heavyduty Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Thanks guys for all of the replies. Will definitely add a couple to the boat! Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 2, 2012 Super User Posted February 2, 2012 Always use a trailer hook on your buzzbait. As said above, white on clear days; black in early AM and late PM and on overcast days; white/chart anytime. X2 on the blade color. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I agree with most others on the black/white colors. Blade color doesn't matter to me. I have had more sucess cranking them just fast enough to stay on the surface with the rod held high, which is the advantage of a Cavatron. They stay on the surface at slower speeds than most buzzbaits. Others will recommend burning it but slower has worked more often for me....................Al Quote
MrSwimJig Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Any color as long as its black on black. 3/8oz Quote
POPRG Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Always wondered why cavitrons don't come in a silver/nickle prop?? Seems to be the most popular blade color available? Not that it really matters,i think the solid construction and performance you get out of them is the key features of a good bait. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 3, 2012 Super User Posted February 3, 2012 I think I have two of every color combination and size, but I have never fished anything but 3/8 oz black on black. As a matter of fact, I only fish the first Cavitron I got and it's REALLY beat up! The MegaStrike Cavitron is special to me, very special. You can catch an unreal number of fish on these and the more bent up and beat they get the better they work...so it seems. I got a black and red blade that i got way back when they first came out. been darn near straightened out many times since i use braid, and its still humming. Quote
BassinSoldier Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Black skirt/Red blades - 3/8 oz. - Low light conditions White skirt/Gold blades - 3/8 oz. All other times x3!! And like a couple others have mentioned, my black with red blade is about 2 years old and has caught more fish than I can count, and I've had to rebend/retune it a few times but it seems to catch even MORE the older it gets. Best buzzbait ever made IMO. When ya get a new one, crimp that rivet and make sure you hold it out the window of yer truck on the way to the lake. Get that blade squealin! Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted February 3, 2012 Super User Posted February 3, 2012 The MegaStrike Cavitron is special to me, very special. Sounds like there could be a good story there, are you willing to share it with us? Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted February 6, 2012 Super User Posted February 6, 2012 Buzzbaits work best for me before sunup or after sundown, or during cloudy weather. Never completely rule one out though for covering lots of shallow water, even during mid day. But 85% of my buzzbait fish come during typical topwater conditions. My favorite cavitron is the 1/4 ounce with a gold blade and a black skirt. Just a slow, steady retrieve and 12 pound mono on a fast ratio baitcaster. Quote
heavyduty Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 I ordered the 3/8 red blade/black skirt and the 3/8 gold blade/white skirt from Megastrike. Should be here by end of the week! Quote
