Polarkraft05 Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I just bought a shimano sahara 2500 plan on putting either 6 or 8 pound yo zuri hybrid ultra soft on it. I will be using this rod for all around fishing, texas/ carolina rig, jogs, spinner baits, some cranks. basically everything you could throw at a bass this rod will be used for exclusively at-least until i get practice in with my bait caster. I would like to keep the price around 50 dollars, used or new doesnt matter as long as there is a steady supply of used ones available on ebay. I realize this is pretty cheap, but im a college student, and i have no need for a 200 dollar rod I dont have anywhere close to look at all the rods, and im not all that picky, just want something of quality. and i know the guys on here will have some good recomendations. I was thinking a med fast or extra fast, (i have never really paid much attention to the length of rods) Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 31, 2012 Super User Posted January 31, 2012 You need a $200 rod, you just don't know it yet. LOL. You missed TW's Fenwick Daiwa V.I.P. closeout sale. the 7'4" would have been a great match. A $125 rod for $50. Only one they had left last time I looked was the 6' ultralight. I'm going to have to see what gets recommended. I need a spinning rod for my Daiwa SS-II 2500C. I'm thinking of getting a Fenwick Elite. I think they are around $80 on Amazon. These rods have been getting excellent reviews. Regular price is $129. I'd say your best bet for a quality rod at that price is to watch the Flea Market here and sell/trade forums on other sites. A Falcon Original or HD would be a good rod. I have no experience with the Kistler Carbon Steel, but it should be another on your list from reviews I've seen. Good luck. EDIT: I'm sure someone will also recommend the Berkley Lightning as another option. I've got a casting model that I practiced with in my backyard, but haven't used. It was purchased with my oldest grandson in mind. Now if I can only get him interested to try fishing again. Quote
BasskingKeith Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Walmart has some decent cheap rods too. Bass pro shops' Graphite series rods aren't bad, they're less than 50 bucks.. You just gotta look around, eventually you'll find something good for $50 bucks or less. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 31, 2012 Super User Posted January 31, 2012 Medium Heavy rod with fast tip. Look around for one at Peckers' BPS, Cabelas or Gander Mountain. Sales coming up in February and March so I suggest waiting for the sale to get your rod. Good luck. Quote
Falkus Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I agree...Wait for the Bass Pro Slaes which tend to be good, I always get my rods from BPS (Carbon-lite or Johnny Morris Elite Series) but I have been going to ***.com lately for it since they carry others that BPS dont have. For example, Powell ML Endurance spinning rod for my Shaky Head Setup. Quote
Missouribassman95 Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Berkley Shock Lightning Rod (49.99-54.00). Great all around rod! Or a Shimano Voltaeus. Quote
Super User Marty Posted February 1, 2012 Super User Posted February 1, 2012 Obviously you first have to decide on the general properties of the rod you want. For a general-purpose rod I'd recommend about a 6'6", medium power and fast action. You may think a $50 rod is pretty cheap, but that doesn't mean it won't do the job for you. I've used $40-50 rods my whole life and they do what I want them to do and they can serve you well too. Quote

Grrrr. :D Just kidding. My previous outfits probably didn't cost more than that.......for rod AND reel. I was too uncouth to know I wasn't suppose to be having fun with such lowly representives of the fishing world. There is truth in the statement that "Ignorance is bliss." :D I know of at least one person who wouldn't fish with the rods I currently have because they wouldn't be worth considering as far as he is concerned. EDIT: However, it gives me satisfaction just knowing my rods and reels are better than anything I ever fished with before. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 1, 2012 Super User Posted February 1, 2012 You bought a nice reel for bass. I agree with Marty except my preference would be 7', but that boils down to individual choice. I have no budget limitations for my gear, I use a $54 rod for most of my bass fishing and I'm real happy with it,. I've used more expensive rods and really didn't see the advantage for me. Good advice to shop a sale, bring your reel and see what feels best and what your eye likes, confidence in your purchase may be more important that the rod itself. Don't get hung up brand, many good choices out there. I returned a $150 rod for that $54, it was a good move too. Quote
tugsandpulls Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 bring your reel in and try it on a few rods see what feels best thats the rod you want Quote
Triton Man Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I have a gander mountain guide series rod ~$60, that is a 6'6" med. fast two-peice that I use a ton. I keep it in my car for when I drive by somewhere but also use it in my boat. Its only because I've bought more expensive rods that I've started to see its not quite as sensitive as them, but still no complaints. If you don't want to spend very much I think its a good one. Online the shipping can be free but some rods are 5 bucks extra, a two peice shouldn't be though. They were having a 30% off sale on their tournament rod, so you could get that one for less than the guide series. Quote
zip pow Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I went to a trade day last week and picked up a lews 300 spinning reel and a skeet Reese micro guide spinning worm rod for a 100$ just keep looking you'll find one Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 1, 2012 Super User Posted February 1, 2012 I have a Berkley Lightning Shock Rod (7' M) as a back up stick and anyone that fishes it loves it. It has a soft enough tip for cranks and has enough backbone to do what you want. Tough rod to beat at your price point. As Tugs said, it may be a good idea to put your reel model on a couple sticks to see how it feels in your hand. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 The new Shimano Sellus is in that price rage of $49-59 Quote
