You might want to check out some youtube videos ...there are some excellent ones out there

Just put some keywords like "baitcast skipping"

With braid, and a MH spinning rod, I just don't see the point of all the headaches.

No need to turn this into a spinning reel vs baitcaster discussion again ;)

OP, look up skipping docks with the g-man on youtube. 2 part video that's pretty good. Biggest key to it is practice.

Sorry didn't see the last one about skipping with a baitcaster.

But I'll still stand by my feeling that it doesn't make any sense to skip with a baitcaster.

Baitcasters are better.....At some things. But skipping isn't one of them.

3 points.

Baitcasting reels by design, just are not made for it.

Spinning reels allow the lure to fall freely once it gets to the back of the dock. Free fall=spinning is better.

While guys are practicing for god knows how long, and/or picking out backlashes, guys with a spinning rod will be catching fish.

It appears we're doing this thing again....

1) Finish with your rod high, drop the tip and peel line. Very easy let a lure free fall with a baitcaster.

2) Your last one makes sense to me for southern anglers. I have ice right now, so I practice techniques for the spring. It takes very little on-the-water time for me to get comfortable with the techniques I've been practicing all winter.

Different strokes for different folks.

You can practice skipping on a cement surface, like your driveway. I did this to learn at times when I wasn't on the water, and had no problem skipping when I started doing it on the water.

Geralds technique didn't quite work for me, but its still worth watching. It's a good place to start, and you'll likely end up finding your own, more comfortable, technique if it doesn't for you either while practicing.

While learning, braid is going to be your best friend. You won't destroy a bunch of line while learning because backlashes with braid can be picked out much easier, and I found it easier to skip with all together. I still used braid on the water, and even though flourocarbon is recommended because of its abrasion resistance, I had no problems getting fish to the boat with 40# braid being wrapped around lots of stuff.

Tried, went through an entire spool of big game line(some odd 1200 yards) and gave up.......

I can do it with a spinning reel easily. I'll stick with what works for me.

There are a number of things besides docks that you can skip a bait under. Some of those times, it makes sense to use a BC rig.

Like it has been said before, watch the videos and spend time practicing.

Get a 6 pack, take your line pick (you'll need it), and sit out there and practice. Play with your reel settings until it feels comfortable. Thats what I had to do and I am still, by no means, good at it.

I started with thick line (heavy braid or 17+ mono) and had my brakes and knobs set tight. I just backed my tensions down from them. Practicing on cemet would be easier with a jig or something else that would easily slide.

I started skipping under docks with hollow body frogs. Once you get the feel down you can switch to baits that don't really skip as easily (a heavy jig with big creature hangin from it) and start to go lower on your line size and brake settings...

I almost always do it with short/hard roll casts and use momentum to get the bait where it needs to go. I can skip better more accurately with a baitcaster than a spinning reel. I can skip a lure like a rock with a spinning reel though, i might as well close my eyes as for where it lands lol I hate spinning reels.
