I recently got a citica 200e, my first bass casting reel, and put some old 30lb spiderwire on it. I was casting 1/4-1/2 oz lures no problem. I didn't even have the magnetic cast control (the little knob on handle side) tightened at all, it was as loose as could be. I decided to get some 8lb YZH and try it. Well, story short but I can barely cast this stuff with out the line on the spool getting really loose. It's not really backlashing, it just gets loose and requires me to strip off a few yards and reel it back on to get it tight. I NEVER had this problem with the braid. What's going on?

Copolymer and fluorocarbon are heavier than braid so a spool full is heavier. Heavier spool = more cast control since the spinning mass is greater.

I don't have a Citica 200E, but far as I know it doesn't have a magnetic cast control. It has centrifugal braking. The knob you are referring to is the spool tension control. It gets set just tight enough to allow the lure to slowly fall with no more than 1 rotation of the spool after the lure hits the water/ground. Once you get good enough, you can set the spool tension just snug enough to remove side-to-side movement, and use your thumb to control the spool.

The brakes are on the other side of the reel. From what I've read, I would suggest 4 on while learning. Read the manual that came with the reel. It will tell you how to set the brakes.

I fish with a couple citicas, one with braid one with flouro.

Try starting with this before tweaking it yourself...

Put 1/2 the brakes on (the plastic caps inside the side plate, 1/2 of em in, 1/2 of em out.) This will shorten your casts but slow the spool down a bit for ya.

Then put the spool the spool tension nob (by the drag star) to a level that allows the lure to free fall if you drop it but doesn't let the spool spin when it hits the water.

Like I said, this will shorten your casting distance but it will help.

Tweak it from there to your preference

Being a Shimano pro, A-Rob never gave it a second thought, but those 3 brakes he is telling you to put on should be every other one. Do not put 3 on one side "on" and the other 3 opposite them "off".

i would try as said above. tighten the spool for casting so when the lure is left to free fall it goes at a slow steady pace. also lightly put your thumb on the reel before the lure hits the water. i know some braid isnt perfectly round like mono so it could be that the friction keeps it from losening. best of luck!
