tugsandpulls Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 ok your only allowed to own 1 spinning outfit and one baitcasting outfit what would you choose Quote
JIGFISHERMAN. Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Easy. 7' MH casting rod in F or XF. Specific model based on budget. 7' M spinning rod, F model based on budget. As for specifics? Not sure. I would have to search for the perfect rod to cover most bases. Spinning rod would probably be a Loomis mossyback 7'1 M XF. Baitcasting would probably be something similar. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 99% of my water is open with no timber or slop so: BC - St. Croix Avid AVC70MF / BPS Carbonlite 6.4 / 10lb YZ Hybrid Spin - St. Croix Avid AVS68MXF / Pflueger Supreme 030 / 6lb YZ Hybrid (spare spool could have 20lb braid) To tell the truth, every fish I've caught in the last two years (over 2,000 from 41 pound carp, 9 pound bass, on down...) could have been caught on just that 6'8" mxf spinning rod. So, if I could only have ONE rod for all fishing...... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 For enthusiasts, technique specific gear is fun to collect. However, three rigs cover all the basics: #1 6 1/2' or 7' MH baitcaster for jigs, some soft plastics and spinnerbaits #2 6 1/2' or 7' MM baitcaster for treble hook lures #3 7' MF spinning rod for lighter lures and a variety of techniques Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 I've got to agree with Jigfisherman on the rods, except mine might be a tad longer. The reels would be a very tough selection. Don't think I could chose just one of each. Okay, I know how to solve it. Buy 10 casting rods of the same make, model, action, and do the same for the spinning rods. Except I would only need 2 spinning rods to cover my favorite spinning reels. That way you only have one rod TYPE of each style. EDIT: Oops. You also specified one reel of each type. Nope. Can't do it. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 its you're not your The point is we understand the OP says. While I encourage the use of proper grammar at all times personally, I would not impose such standards on a forum like this. It is apparent that your prowress and command of the English language is sound. Before you correct someone, perhaps you should check your what you wrote, because it is not correct either. For future reference, use it's and not its. Its in the context you used, is not correct. Its denotes ownership or possession. The correct word to use in this case is the contraction it's, meaning it is. Ha!! I'm suffering from cabin fever and I'm hearing the voice of my seventh grade Enlish teacher lecturing me on the correct usage of its and it's. My usage of grammar in my post is probably full of errors too. To the subject, I'm in jigfisherman's camp. May we never ever be forced by law to fish under such constraints! Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 i basically use two setups when I go out, the Avid 7' MHF/Curado 201E and a Premier 5 'ULM/Sahara 1000 Quote

Super User islandbass Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 Yeah, the English language has its quirks. There are so many "mistakes" we all make when speaking and writing: 1) Mixing up the use of then and than - we see with great frequency, "This rod is better then that rod." Not correct. 2) Using there, they're and their - Amazing how we screw up the use of these words. We can point to the decreasing emphasis of proper usage of grammar in the schools. To their shame, many people cannot identify the subject, predicate or both in a sentence, or worse yet, name the eight parts of speech. Grammar was one of my weakest subjects in school until I met my 7th grade English teacher. He was the best. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't expect it to see a firm grasp of the English language here, but I do from my kids and myself. Quote
Dave T. Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 BC - St. Croix Avid, LTB, LE, or LX 7'MH with Shimano Curado Reel (pick one) or a Revo. Spin - St. Croix Avid, LTB, LE, or LX 6'9" MLXF with Shimano CI4 2500 or Diawa Fuego 200 Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Situational ethics. I want options not limitations. I won't own any combos, I will borrow 10 from my buddy. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted January 28, 2012 Super User Posted January 28, 2012 A 7' Medium heavy spinning rod/reel with 8 - 10 pound mono for finesse plastics 7' medium/medium heavy fiberglass/composite casting rod and reel with 12 pound mono. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 28, 2012 Super User Posted January 28, 2012 If I'm in the Kayak I only take 2 rods 1=7'M 1=7'MH I don't use spinning reels It varies from day to day what rods I take out but lately one has 12# and one has 15# fc spooled on them, Quote
NCLifetimer Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Baitcaster: 7' MH rod. Spinning: take whatever rod is cheapest, cut it down to 3 feet, and use it as a lure retriever. Joking aside, probably a medium to throw spinner/cranks. Sold all my spinning rods as soon as I learned to use a bait caster. Besides the one used for a lure retriever ofcourse. Quote
Super User deep Posted January 29, 2012 Super User Posted January 29, 2012 I want to play too. Okuma 7'11" heavy, Cardiff 401A, 25 lb Big Game or Yo Zuri hybrid, and a few ROF5 hudds. Powell Max 7'3" Spinning, Shimano Symetre 2500, 30 lb Samurai, and a few 1/4 oz jigs with a bag of Rage Craws. If I ain't catching them on swimbaits or jigs, guess I ain't gonna catch them on any other baits. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 29, 2012 Super User Posted January 29, 2012 Fish a different tourney.Too much retying. Or fish a jig all day and forget about the second combo. In that case Ardent F500 and a Fenwick HMG Quote
trevor Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Baitcasting: 6.3:1 reel spooled with 65 lb braid on a 7' MH Fast rod Spinning: 3000 reel spooled with 12 lb mono on a 7' M Fast rod And I guess this is geared more to the areas I fish, probably not a universal standard. Quote
james 14 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I've grown very partial to longer rods in the last year or so. I see no reason to go any shorter than the 8ft limit imposed in many tournaments with some good tip action unless I plan to flip. Of course there aren't many in that length available but there are plenty 7'6" rods out there. For the baitcaster I'd be using a MH rod with a whippy tip but solid backbone and 20lb FC. For the spinner I'd be using a M rod with 10 or 12lb FC line. Both rods, of couse, would be 7.5ft. As for the grammar. It drives me INSANE to see the degrading standards of proper grammar in our society but I'd never call anyone out on it in a forum like this. Quote

Lucky Craft Man Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Baitcasting: G Loomis GLX BCR853 - Shimano Core 50mg Reel - 12 lb. Fluorocarbon line Spinning: G Loomis GLX BCR852S - Pflueger Supreme 8035 - 10 lb. Fluorocarbon line These two are a mainstay wherever I go. I just ordered both in NRX, so I will be curious to see if there is a discernible upgrade in performance and sensitivity. Quote
Mike__D Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Out of my current lineup I would have to pick these 2... Casting: Legend elite 7MH with a pflueger patriarch xt Spinning: St.Croix avid 68MXF with a pflueger patriarch 9530. Mike D Quote
