Hey I had a small FLW bag with 4 boxes that ran out of room FAST, and it sucked carrying it with one hand or on the shoulder. I went and bought a remington backpack at walmart for 10 bucks. I fit all 4 boxes in the main compartment with room to spare and its a ton more comfortable having my hands free. I was wondering if any of you guys rigged up something to hold your rod on your pack. This one has a side compartment for waterbottles and I was thinking of slicing an X in the bottom so the butt of the rod can slip through but not the reel. Any other ideas?

Backpack is the way to go, mine has a water bottle holder on each side. It also has compression straps on the sides, I use these to hold poles in place, and set the pole handles in water bottle holder!!

i always use an over the shoulder style tackle bag myself, and just carry my rod(s) in the other hand.

ive been trying to tinker with building a rod holder that will carry 1-3 poles, but havent got to involved with that task yet.... as of this point.

never tried the backpack idea.

I do!

I've got just a back pack and I put a few utility boxes in there. I have a big BPS red bag that I keep all my stuff in, cranks, worms, 10" worms, jigs, spinnerbaits, creatures, hooks and other stuff.

I also have smaller ones that keep empty in my back pack. I take a few of the worms and fill up on box, fill one with cranks, creatures, spinnerbaits, and so on!

It's pretty light, I just keep it on and walk the shore! I most of the time have one rod.. bait caster, some time I has a spinning rod with me too, but only if I plan to do a lot of finesse fishing. I also keep two bottles of water in the two sides.

Ya, back packs are handy! :)

Get a hold Islandbass on here, he's also on an other forum I'm on and gave me the statics for making it. I've yet to make it, but will get around to it!  ;D

I carry a backpack and a small shoulder bag from gander mountains. My backpack carries my two binder of plastics,scale,1 3700 box of worms and a jar of my home made scent.Plus an extra spool of line for my spinning rig,i can just swap out the spool and be ready to go again. When you river fish I think it's a must to have an extra spool of line just in case. My shoulder bag carries everything else from lures, tools, jigs, weights and hooks.

I just picked up the Brownng 360 Tackle bag from BPS. Its money.I can fit two rods on the back, and then I can still hold my fishin partners leash (my dumb dog). I find it a pain in the rear sometimes when my rods hit tree limbs and stuff.. Its good for wide open ponds.. Not so much for rivers other rough terrain places.

It is a nice bag BUT keep in mind:

The ad says it will hold up to 4 utility boxes. That's a big maybe. It will hold three with no trouble at all. There's more than enough room in the main section for a fourth box if needed.

I waterproofed mine with Scotchguard fabric waterproof that comes in an aerosol can. I fish in the rain a lot so that's why I did this.

I have an old Marine Corps standard issue back pack. I think it is the MOLLE system I think.

I have a backpak made for surfers, i.e. to carry a full wetsuit, and stuff. Kinda pricey at close to 100.00, but I can stuff just about anything in there, drinks, towels, and of course all my boxs plus about 15 bags of new baits, mostly Ragetail stuff. I could probably fit a very small person in there, but the dang thing is heavy enough already..lol

I carried a regular bag made by Rapala for about 6 mos. never again.

Yep, which makes it much easier to cover more water.. :)

I switch between a tackle box and backpack. I find that the backpack is easier to carry things.

If you have to travel through bush and brush, then whatever you plan to devise ought to completely protect the blank, JMHO.

I too use a backpack but have a homemade quiver to hold my rods. Sometimes, if I am using my 2-piece rods, I will keep them in the main pouch of the pack in the center, held up by the zippers without the reel attached and this is when I know there won't be anything it can bump into.

I found an old backpack frame (aluminum) at a garage sale.  I then used zip ties to fasten a pvc rod holder on each side.  I can only carry 2 rods (but you could double up on the pieces of pvc to get 2 on each side.)  It works well for places with no overhanging cover to get tangled up in.  Then I just strap my backpack to the frame.  Works well when I'm riding my bike along paved paths.  A little bulky but nice to have my hands free.  Message me if you want a picture of it.

Had some requests so heres some pics.  As you can see you could double up on the pvc side by side with another piece and a longer zip tie.

I fish almost entirely from the bank unless I'm out with one of my buddies and I have used the same plano waist pack for several seasons.  It doesn't hold much, but enough to cover most situations.  For longer outings I also wear my hydration pack and that will fit a few more baits as well.  With the waist pack I can hold an extra rod by putting it through the belt on my back, this works so so and so I usually only carry one rod.

Bassmajor.....that pack looks awesome!  Thanks for posting that.

Bassmajor,

That is pretty sweet. When I designed my quiver, I originally wanted it mounted on my back, but I quickly learned that through brush, ideal mobility was limited to open areas. As a result, I had to forego my shoulder straps. It is now hand-held and I can hold three rods all at once with one hand.

@D16 - Compres are one of the best deals out there, and I would take it over the MOJO. The mojo's warranty, if it is important to you, is finite.  The compre's is for life. In addition, it is an excellent rod. I have an MH spinning that serves as my all around spinning.  I used it today and nailed a smallie during lunch break.  :)
