Nkybassfisherman Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Are you all using oil or grease on your worm gear? And what makes one better than the other in this situation? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Grease is not the best option to lube worm gears due to their exposed nature. The grease collects dirt and gums them up. A couple drops of oil works fine. I use a toothpick to drop some 90wt gear oil into the groves. Jfrancho had a good idea of using ATF (automatic transmission fluid) The atf will lube very well but is thinner and may require slightly more frequent relubing. Quote
NBR Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 When I was a youngster I had a worm gear/pawl failure at a time when one reel and rod was standard. I was out of fishing until we found and received a new one. Beginning then I started putting a drop of very light oil on the worm gear every fishing day and still do. I do a very basic clean and relube job on the reels annually but I don't break them down very much. For me that is a job for the professionals. Depending on how much I fish I will open them up and put a drop of oil in each bearing that supports a rotating shaft during the cast. J Francko's idea of ATF sounds pretty good but I use KVD's line conditioner or Reel Magic depending on what's in the boat. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 My advice is to keep Reel Magic, WD-40 and all other similar spray silicones away from reel internals and levelwinds. The solvent that makes them sprayable actually acts as a degreaser and leaves little residual lubrication. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 I would not recommend using KVD Line & Lure Conditionaer to lube any reel part either. The ATF works pretty well, as does any fine reel oil. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 I have started using TG's Rocketfuel, liquid grease, it is basically a very heavy version of the yellow label rocket fuel. If it's a little too thick, you can custom blend it with any of their other products in the rocketfuel line. Quote
The Guy Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 My advice is to keep Reel Magic, WD-40 and all other similar spray silicones away from reel internals and levelwinds. The solvent that makes them sprayable actually acts as a degreaser and leaves little residual lubrication. I used reel magic as a line conditioner and it got into the reel. I had to take the reel apart and clean it because it got so rough. I'll never use it on a reel again, works great for freeing up rusty pliers though. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Reel X works well on worm gears. It has anti-corrision properties and has the right viscosity. Quote
urp Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Agree with Reel X or any machine oil such as 3 in 1. Quote
