Im looking into getting better with the jigs, I have a couple questions.

1. What's a quality brand to buy?

I had some bass pro brand ones and they all just fell apart after little use.

2. Rattles or No Rattles?

3. What weight? (I already have some heavy ones for punching through grass and heavy weeds)

I fish mostly depths from 1-15 ft, little current

Just looking for a decent all around weight, Thinking 3/8's?

4. Any luck fishing them without a trailer?

Just lookin for some info, Thanks.

I recently started fishing the jig and pig. The jigs I use were poured and painted by one of my friends. They work awsome and I have been cacthing some quality fish on them. They don't cost as much either. so you can lose some. I really don't think the rattles matter that much. I always fish them with a trailer. 3/8 OZ should work good.

Jigs catch all sizes of fish, they are hands down my favorite bait to throw. I caught the fish in my avatar on a jig.

 What Brands :

Dirty Jigs Tackle makes AWESOME jigs, in all sizes, colors, and jig head types. I tied my own jigs for a while, but these have replaced all of my hand tied jigs.

Rattles : It's really up to you. I don't use them, except on very rare occasions.

Weight:

Lakes and Reservoirs that I'm fishing 1-8ft or so, I throw a 1/2oz Pitching Jig (Arkey head). For deeper in lakes I throw a 1/2oz Football jig.

For the Delta , where I fish the most, there is current, I choose to use a 3/4oz jig there.

1/2oz jigs are a GREAT place to start, you can feel the bait very well with them, and they work just about anywhere.

A great trailer to use is a Paca Chunk, Sweet Beaver, or  Yamamoto Twin Tail Grub. All 3 work very well and you can't go wrong.

Colors:

If you decide to check out Dirty Jigs, I love Curts Craw in 1/2oz Pitching Jig, any black and blue color is also very useful and will almost always catch you fish.

Clear water : Brown / Green / Purples

Darker water : Blacks / Blues / Reds

Hopes this helps a little bit. You can check the jigs out at HookedUpTackle, or DirtyJigsTackle .

Hope this helps a bit.

2. Rattles or No Rattles?  That is up to you.  I only use rattles in muddy water.

3. What weight? I fish mostly depths from 1-15 ft, little current

I would say 1/4-3/8 somewhere in that area.  Most of mine I use are 3/8-1/2.

Just looking for a decent all around weight, Thinking 3/8's?  Probably the most versitale

4. Any luck fishing them without a trailer?  Never had much luck on it unless I was fishing a hair jig.  Then yes.

Check out this video, it really goes into depth about choosing the right jig.  http://www.another site/fishing-videos/jig-fishing/

1) I like SK pro model jigs a lot! I did get some Thunder stuck jigs in the mail yesterday night and they seem very good, they have a very thick (100 or 80) strand skirt, they do how ever lake rattles, but you can simply add them.

2) Rattles, yes, always!

3) 1/4 - 3/8

4) ALWAYS use a trail, I like chigger craws and yum chunks.

What's a quality brand to buy?

There are dozens of quality brands on the market my personal favorite is Terry Oldham's which is outstanding in heavy cover of all types.

Rattles or No Rattles?

My opinions on rattles is that I find them to be unnecessary but on the rare occasion that I use one it will be a Lunker Lures Original Rattleback Flipping Jig or Triple Rattleback

What weight?

ROF (rate of fall) determines what weight I throw not depth of water; I'll throw ¼ oz in 25' or ½ oz in 5'.

Any luck fishing them without a trailer?

My personal preference is with one

My preference on trailers

Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craws

Zoom Swimmin' Chunk & Salty Pro Chunks in sapphire blue

Uncle Josh #11A Original Chunk & #23 Kicker Frog in blue

Rage Tail Chunk, Craw, & Lobster in colors to match jigs

Top colors: Black-N-Blue, Black Neon, Black Neon/Brown/Amber

There have been a lot of great suggestions already, you may want to round out your selection with some finnesse jigs. A very readily available option would be the Booyah Baby Boo which comes in 3/16 oz. & 5/16 oz. sizes and works well in weedy lakes. If your willing to spend the extra $$ I have been very impressed with the Kietech Model 1 Tungsten jig, I use 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 oz sizes. Also the Kietech Model 2 football jig came through for me during a tough cold front last weekend in the 1/2 oz size. I like using the 2.75" Yum Craw Papi for my trailer, I snip app 1/8" off, super glue it on and makes for a very compact package. I throw this on a Loomis BCR852 rod with the old Curado 101D spooled with 10 lb Floro.

I first started with the BPS "Uncle Buck's" jigs, they were pretty terrible, then i moved on to the bitsy bug jigs, hated those also, moved up a bit to the strike king football head and that satisfied me for a few months, tried the booyah boo jig and i hated that also, I just purchased 2 packs megastrike e2 jig heads in 3/8 ounce, THEY'RE AMAZING!! i'm ready to order more at the end of the month.

I personally would recommend the megastrike e2 jig heads with a ragetail lobster trailer. it looks bloody amazing in the water. TRUST me you'll crap bricks when you see this thing in the water lol

I used to be a fan of Booyah jigs until I discovered Jewel jigs.  My favorite Jewel jig is the Eakin's jig in Green Gourd color.

    For weight usually 7/16 oz.

For trailers, I usually go with Rage Tail Craws, Twin-Tail grubs, and Flappin' Hogs on occasion.

There are so many jig and trailers out there the possibilities are limitless.  I really like the Eakins jigs in 5/16 and 3/8oz finesse with a Berkley 3" Chigger Craw.  Blue and Black Flash Jig and Blue and Black trailer.  I also like the Yum money Craw trailers in Ozark.

Gman's jigs won't ever fall apart on you.  You'll literally have to tear the strands apart to get the skirt to fall apart.

No rattles, and no real reason why I don't fish them.  The main reason is probably because GMAN's jigs don't come with them.

I fish 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 oz jigs in basically the same depths you're fishing.

I always use a trailer.  It's almost always going to be a Rage Tail product or a Netbait product too.
