I will be the first to admit, when a village is looking for an idiot, my name is usually up there high on the list. OK, REALLY high on the list.

I have Split Rings, I have Split Ring Pliers and I have Treble Hooks. Is there a trick? I have tried to change just the hook, the ring and then the hook, voodoo dolls and still takes forever with much hook induced pain. I also fear I am doing damage to the new hook I am putting on.

Any help is appreciated, band-aids are going to be named "Twitch-Hole-Covers" soon.

Thanks - Twitch

It depends on the split ring pliers. They are not equal.  For example my Rapala split ring pliers just won't do smaller size 1 or 2 split rings without it being a PITA or ruining the split ring. It does work well with size 3 and up.

Choose a pair of split ring pliers suited size of the split rings and you will fare much better.

I hate split ring pliers, I use a pair of needle nose for this job.   Put the hook on the ring first but just enough to hold the ring open, then install on the hook hanger.

I can't stand using split ring pliers. But just like the previous post said, have some plastic tubing. It will save you a lot of cuts.  :)

im confused at how youre bleeding.

before i bought pliers for this i used to do it with the file attatchment on my fingernail clippers. from #10's to big #3's i cant think of a time that i actually cut myself or hooked myself changing them. it was a massive p.i.t.a. though.

im almost conviced actually that i was more profeciant at it with the nail clippers. lol.... sometimes the pliers just get in the way. cant think of any advice really to give you on it except be more careful!!! :)

I forgot to mention that I wear safety glasses whenever I do this without fail. It sucks to get pricked in the finger, but I imagine it would be far worse to get hooked in the eye.

Don't know if the pics are doctored, but it will get the point across about the prudence of wearing glasses. OUCH!

If you are very careful, you can open split rings with a knife blade.  I have better luck than with some split ring pliers.  For better results, leave the split ring on the lure.

Mind me when I say this:

I spend A LOT of time in Orthopedic Trauma Operating Rooms, multiple fractures, gunshot wounds, MVAs, motorcycle accidents, severed limbs fingers and toes.

Island THAT is the grossest thing I have EVER seen.

I will be puking if anyone needs me.

Twiiiiiitttt(verp)ch

Which pliers you have does make a difference. Sometimes I think a file probably is the better tool though. It REALLY gets bad in my situation. Close-up vision started going bad at 40 and now I'm passed 60 ;D...

Wouldn't have been my first choice for sure but the prospect of a free education apparently CAN make a man swallow his pride :-[

Just takes practice.  I was using my fingernail or a penknife until I found a pair of split ring pliers on the ground.  I don't think fumbling with it is so unusual, but after time it's second nature.
