chilliblanket Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 What are your guy's thoughts on running braid with a fluoro leader as opposed to all fluoro? I was thinking about running this combination of line for my reels currently spooled with straight fluoro. What do you guys think? Quote
MMan16 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 What techniques/cover are you fishing in? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 23, 2012 Super User Posted January 23, 2012 That has been discussed many times http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/95949-braid-to-flouro-leader/ Quote
jkarol24 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Ive switched all of my setups (minus cranking) to powerpro braid with flouro leaders. I cant stand casting flouro and dont like mono, so braid works good for me. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 run all braid and forget the flouro. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 I the very clear water I fish in the winter and early spring I have found that braid and fluro are a good combination. In fact I have 5 setups rigged and loaded for tomorrows trip to upper Bull Shoals. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 A quick search will get you loads of information on this that comes with many differences of opinions. Here's a short version of mine ~ I do like braid and use it where ever I can. I also like using a leader so I'm not cutting back on the braid as I retie. I rarely use a fluorocarbon leader, especially when the hook set is predictable hard and on a short cast, like jigs and plastics in cover. I'm sure it's my fault but I pop off too many times. I switched to mono and virtually eliminated this. I also use mono for a leader whenever there are treble hooks involved. A soft rod and drag with braid and mono works for me. Although mono floats the braid in thin and cuts the water so I'm going to say they cancel out. (I realize many will disagree) I use all braid for the thickest cover and frog fishing. I apply a fly fishing line dressing to the last 10-20 feet of braid when casting a frog, which helps keep the braid from sinking too much. A-Jay Quote
A-Rob Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I break off flouro leaders with baitcasting gear. I go straight flouro or straight braid. However, I fish smallies on spinning gear I will go braid with a flouro leader (and gentle hook sets!) Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 Braid sucks, fish all fluoro. And there you have it, all bases are covered. 1 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 Never fished braid... haven't had a reason to go away from fluoro. Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 I fish straight braid on all my rigs, but I fish HEAVY cover. Quote
Diggy Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I have straight braid and straight fluoro..I prefer the braid, I fish all types of water with it. Mono is a no no, for me anyway Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 24, 2012 Super User Posted January 24, 2012 Braid with a short leader, virtually no stretch. My biggest shortcoming bass fishing is the hookset, we do not set hooks for saltwater, braid is my freshwater savior. Quote
Fishing-Vol Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I used to fish all braid w/floro leader. But the past 3 years I've fished all floro except top water. 15 # Halo on pitching rod, 12 # halo on most of the rest, 10# halo on crankin rod. Quote
chilliblanket Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Thanks for everyones input and help. I'm just trying to get fluoro perks with braid manageability. A lot of you seem to like just the straight fluoro.. i guess i can try both and see how it turns out. Have any of you guys fished seminole? I used to fish all braid w/floro leader. But the past 3 years I've fished all floro except top water. 15 # Halo on pitching rod, 12 # halo on most of the rest, 10# halo on crankin rod. so it seems to me that you prefer running straight fluoro as opposed to braid with a fluoro leader right? what makes it better for you? soopd Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I have have tried Straight braid and I love the sensitivity. I just hated the way it fished during high winds and I hated how it felt on on the fall. I went to braid with Fluor and it still fished the same in high winds and it didn't feel right to me on the fall. I decided to go back to mono and it kept feeling like a rubber band to me. I didn't want to go straight fluorcarbon because of bad issues in past. I decided to just fish straight Fluor for a few weeks and give it a fair shot. After fishing with it and catching a few fish I love fluorcarbon. I went back to braid on 1 rod and I still just felt like I lost contact with the bait. Fast forward 6 months I have 10 setups and I have 8 of them with fluorcarbon. Quote

I fished braid when I was an inexperienced fisherman, because it helped me "feel" what was happening, and I always kept a tight line to the sinker. As I became more experienced, I learned to trust what I was doing. The braid has great feel on a tight line, but not on slack line. Floro has better feel on a slack line. I also, at the time, didn't trust floro. Floro became better and I became more willing to spend the xtra $ on quality floro. If you ask "whats the best floro", you'll get many answers. But I like and trust P-line Halo. I haven't had any issues useing floro for my main line. But I also would have no problem going back to braid tomorrow. Quote
