anyone know any bait that is similar to the fat ika by yamamoto? I see they are $7 now, and I am not trying to pay that for 10...

yamamoto baits are very pricey.  Look into ***.  much cheaper, and all i've used have been more durable than other more expensive baits.  their craw tube is similar.  If you want a faster fall rate like the ika's solid body, just put a small weight in it.  they're 25 for 8dollars.

*** used to carry a bait called the *. No longer.

Get a bottle of Mend-It and it will double their life. Senko's as well.

If you need to justify the price, see how well they work. I'm frugal myself but I'd rather catch fish on a bait that sells for $6.99 for 10 than get skunked on a bait that is $3.99 per 10.

Food for thought. RoadWarrior got me hooked on Ikas. (no pun intended). No looking back now. Don't forget to try them rigged backwards. Start the hook at the skirt side, not in the "Head"

Yep, the palm tree is exactly the same bait.  Except for the amount of salt added.  It will have a bit of a different fall rate vs the IKA.  But pretty close.

There are only 5 to a package of Kinami. That makes them .90 per each.

Fat Ikas are .70.  But I agree, price is getting up there for something that usually lasts only 1 or 2 fish.

Agreed.  Like I said, i've used similar baits by other companies, and just find they outperform.  I feel like with GYCB you're paying for the name.  Yea, they make great baits that catch fish.  But there's similar baits that catch just as many fish, and last longer, and are rediculously cheaper.  I have no problem paying more for something that works better, but I don't find that to be the case here.

I like the Gary Yamamoto 5" D/T H-Grub. Great for poor man jigs and you can cut off the "flappers" and have a Fat Ika look-a-like.

I love the 5" Hula grub, one of my staples (that's a #209 on a 1 oz football head in my avitar), but the body is about half the diameter of the fat Ika. Same as the regular Ika, though, and I'll keep a few spider jigs that got the tails ripped off to use as a "skinny Ika" on a drop shot. But the Fat one is a different creature, you can flyline it in 25' of water when the wind is mellow and it's a good one. It's like a big fat gumdrop or something... :)

what size hooks do yall use for these

I like a 5/0 Owner Wide Gap Plus- you need a wide gap, the Fat Ika is a thick bait.  Easy to tex-pose through the thin wee end

My fat ikas last like 3-5 fish after one end gets tore up just switch sides the fish don't seem to mind. ::)

Sure the senkos last only 1-2 fish,(not trying to get into that discussion) but the ika is a very thick bait and will usually last much longer. You can usually just rotate it a little after a few strikes and it will NORMALLY last 3-5 fish or so.

It also takes to mend-it very well.It makes them like brand new.

I like the wide gap plus 4/0 Owner hook for it.It is a perfect match. Many others will say use the Gammy 4/0.I prefer the owner though, gap is wider.

I have been wanting to try these but our local BPS does not carry them.  :'(  I guess I will wait until I make another order from TW

Several of the BPS stores I have been to carry the Kinami Palm Tree, which as stated above, is nearly identical to the Fat IKA and comes in some colors the Fat IKA does not. As to the durability factor, if you go to the GYCB website to buy them, you can get the salt water version which has proven to be a bit more durable for me.
