jj2 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I am in the market for a new pair of glasses have it narrowed down to oakley flak jackets with the shallow blue lens or costas probably the fathoms on the costas is the difference between the 400 and 580 series lens worth the extra money Quote
soopd Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I had a pair of Oakley flack jackets. I liked the way they fit and the lenses were great for some time. The peeling of the lens started to flake as well as the peeling on the frames. I carried them back from where I got th and pretty much said tough luck since I had them longer than 1 year. I purchased the costas brine with the 580 lenses and they is no comparison between them and oakleys. The costas are far superior in lense quality and frame quality. The only issue is the frames are stretched out a little bit. But that is my fault on the way I take them off my big head. I have had them for 3 years now. As far as the 400 lenses I have no idea. Super User 00 mod Posted January 23, 2012 Super User Posted January 23, 2012 I have had both and like both. I have had 8 pairs of half/flak jackets and am on my 3rd pair of costa's. The 580 lens is much better. If you can go to a store which has both, try them for yourself and you will see! Good luck and let us know which ones you get! Jeff Quote
jkarol24 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Oakleys are nice but i feel as if your not only buying sunglasses, but the name and the frames. Lens quality should be the biggest priority, and the Costa 580G lenses are very hard to beat. Quote
CTD6677 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I have been using Wiley X glasses for a couple of years now and really like them. I have a pair of ZAK's and P-17's, one with blue lenses and one with yellow. Very comfortable and durable. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 before i received a pair of costas for my birthday i was part of the "all polarized lenses are the same so no need to spend the extra money " crowd. I really couldn't justify spending $200 on sunglasses. But when i did get the costas (580 lens) i noticed a dramatic difference and could instantly tell why they cost more. Having said that i also have a pair of the 400 lens that Costa offers and honestly they do not perform nearly as well as the 580.Most other manufactures glasses are polycarbonate lens just like the 400 series, but the 580 are glass and it makes a huge difference. I believe i read somewhere that the 580's cut out more of the yellow spectrum of light which is why they are a better lens for fishing. I can't recall all the details and was way above my head technically. Bottom line would i pay an extra $50-100 on Costas with the 400 lens....No....but i would certainly pay whatever extra cost is associated for the 580 lens. on a side note the costas 580 i currently have are strictly for fishing duties and the 400 are for everyday use.. TBendBassin Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I own both and to me costa is superior.. i have a pair of oakley straight jackets in the shallow blue and i have the costa corbinas 580G in every lense color they have for that model.. i like the corbinas the best because of the no slip frame when your face gets sweaty.. i also own one pair of fathoms but they let in alot of light around the lense Quote
ChrisAW Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I'm in the market as well, and get a discount through work on either Wiley's or Costa's. I wouldn't have any problem spending the extra money on Costa's, but the 580 lenses being glass is what I'm worried about. I had a pair of Wiley's and I thought they were great, especially the day I had a 3/4oz jig come out of a fishes mouth and smack me right in the eye. They definitely saved me from harm there, I'm not sure I want glass lenses if it ever happens again Are the 580s really that much better? How much better do they cut the glare? Are they still a basic couple-feet-wide spot that I can see into the water, or do they cut the glare better and allow me to see a bigger area? The water is very clear in the lakes around me, and sight fishing is a big part of my fishing at times, so the better they are the more likely ill end up with a pair of Blackfins with some 580 lenses. Senkoman12 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 im gonna be getting costa corbinas with 480p lens. i cant do much more due budget reasons. i think they will be much better than my last pair which were the $10 walmart ones Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Ive gone through 2 sets of oakleys in about 4yrs. The amber lens always seems to peel/bubble after about 2yrs. Although i love my oakleys, i may be looking for something else when i go to replace them. At $200 a pop...i want something that will last! But gotta have the amber lens! Ive showed the dealer in my area about the lens peeling and like said above...tough luck! Quote
Shinyboy Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Spotters. It's an australian company, but the glasses are available from many online sites. Expensive, but maybe the last ones you'll ever buy. Incredible lenses. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted January 26, 2012 Super User Posted January 26, 2012 I agree with the above, the Costa 580s are better and the difference and worth is clear. I'm selling a pair right now because I decided the style wasn't for me. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/96576-like-new-costa-del-mars-for-sale/ Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 26, 2012 Super User Posted January 26, 2012 Cant go wrong with the 580s. There is a huge difference what u can see with them over the 480s. My wife has 2 pairs of 480s and I have two pairs of 580s. You can definitely see the difference. Quote
BassinNC Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Go with Costa. I have the Brine with the 580p amber lenses and i absolutely love them. So light you can hardly tell your wearing them and the polarization is superior to anything I've every wore. And on top of that Costa stands behind all their products with a great warranty. You will not be disappointed with Costa. Quote
