Pete-K Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Do you have a general ideal of what your looking for? I know for me I have always liked my Rem 1100's and my BELIGUM A-5 BROWNING 12 GA with gold trigger. But don't use them anymore. Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 21, 2012 Super User Posted January 21, 2012 Saiga 12gauge. Put a low cap clip and u can hunt with it. Put a 20 round drum and you can use it for home defense, or hunting "two legged" animals. If your a traditionalist then a Mossberg, folding stock with a riot pump, heat shield, and breaching barrel. If you long for the wild wild west or Old English country side. Then go for a over under or side by side. Quote

Super User 00 mod Posted January 21, 2012 Super User Posted January 21, 2012 Used is for sure the way to go there, and about the only reliable shotgun I would consider in that kind of price range would be to find a used Ithaca 37 or a browning bps pump. Pumps, for the most part are always gonna be reliable. Only things you really have to worry about are rust(big no-no), someone storing shells in the gun for a long amount of time and weakening the spring so that the shells wont pop out, and making sure the firing pin is still in good shape. My suggestion would be to save a little money and get a better used gun or look for what I have mentioned here and make sure to break it down and look over it well, as well as ask to shoot it first! Good luck and let us know what you find...... PS- Many people suggest using slugs or buckshot for home defense. I recommend using something much smaller that will still do damage, but not go through walls. Personally my hd shotgun has 1 1/8 oz 7.5 shot with a IC choke. Plenty enough to do damage and will not go through a wall and potentially harm someone on the other side. Pumps are also good for home defense for reliability( no FTF) and the sound is enough to scare someone off. Last thing you really want to do is live the rest of your life knowing you took someone else's. Jeff Quote
florida strain Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 A good quailty shotgun for less than 150.00 may be hard to find. you may be able to find a maverick 88 by mossberg for around that much, but its less quality . its basicaly a 500 pump, but with cheaper parts. the barell and stock as well as alot of other aftermarket parts interchange with the 500 though , so you can build it up how you want it. Super User 00 mod Posted January 22, 2012 Super User Posted January 22, 2012 A good quailty shotgun for less than 150.00 may be hard to find. Depends on the area and the economic status of the people. I have run across deals you would never imagine, and then been some places where a used price is less than $50 off brand new. Some shops here in Memphis have consignment, and they are gonna be a little higher than say "the guy you know at the mechanic shop around the corner who is selling some tools and guns because he needs money to buy his kids Christmas presents." Good deals are to be had, you just have to be patient, cash in hand, and always looking! Jeff Quote
Bass-minded Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Would pawn shops be a good place to look? Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 23, 2012 Super User Posted January 23, 2012 You are looking for a "deal" to get a gun that cheap. The best thing about a pawn shop, is you can almost guarantee the gun to not be stolen. Bad side about a pawn shop, is they know the going price for your area, and unless they are desperate to get rid of it, won't make the kind of "deal" you are looking for. At a shop they have hourly wages and overhead to pay! Jeff Quote
VolFan Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 You can get a Remington 870 at Walley World for under $300. I would go that route or try to find one used. There are several websites that broker gun sales. Also, asking around at gun shops for what you're looking for may help. They may be able to line you up with a private seller for a finder's fee. Super User clayton86 Posted January 23, 2012 Super User Posted January 23, 2012 Gun shows are a good place to look also not the booths persay but guys walking around looking to sell their gun to buy something else. Quote
Bass-minded Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Would gun shows be advertised in the Sunday paper? And do they have entry fees? Thanks Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted January 27, 2012 Super User Posted January 27, 2012 Some are advertised some arnt and usually it's $5 entryfor adults around here Quote
nick76 Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I was looking for a gun show in my area a month or so ago and found several that were not listed in the paper. Just do a Google search for gun shows in your area. We have a few FFL dealers here who put one on every week in a different location. Some of them charge admission (usually $5) and some don't. Just a heads up. Quote

You'll be amazed at the destruction capability of this light load. And with this load, you don't have to worry about sending a double 0 buck pellet into your neighbor's house. However, regardless of what you get for home defense, practice a lot with it at the range. Remember, after the first shot, you will be blinded and you won't be able to hear anything.....so make it count! Quote
tholmes Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I'd be looking for a used Remington 870 Express 12 ga. You'd be lucky to find a good one at your price point, but I've seen them go for around $200. Tom Quote
endless Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I'd be looking for a used Remington 870 Express 12 ga. You'd be lucky to find a good one at your price point, but I've seen them go for around $200. Tom I just bought this new in Va for $319 in box. 12 gauge 28" barrell. Love the gun and the wood stock and pump. At walmart here it goes for $299. I recommend it as well if can find in your price range as well.Your local hunting shops might sell used guns as well and I think Gander Mountain does as well but not sure if can find something in your price besides maybe a Maverick 88. Here in Va at Walmart it goes new for $177. 12 gauge and 20 gauge. My buddy has a Maverick 88 in both 20 gauge and 12 gauge he likes allot. Good luck in your search and hopefully you can find a good deal on something you like in a decent quality shape. Oh Wow didn't realize the last post was on the 7th lol. Well did you have any luck in your search? Quote
Bass-minded Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Thanks. I have had no luck so far. It is very hard to find shotguns in my price range. So far, I have only found single barrel break actions or semi-automatics at anywhere from $200 to $500. Ido thank all of you for your advice. It has helped me on the right track. :-) Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 8, 2012 Super User Posted March 8, 2012 Why used?? You can get an affordable new maverick pump shotgun for a little over $200. Maybe $250 max. Or maybe even cheaper it depends on where we shop. When a used 12 or 120 model winchester 12ga pump would be around $300 to $400. The maverick shotgun is manufactured by mossberg in texas by the same people who manufacture there bolt action rifles. My new maverick is doing double duty, i removed the 28'' barrel and installed the 18.5'' barrel and she is guarding the homeland / family at my home now. I also picked up a 30'' barrel with double bead sights too for shooting skeets. Next i need the scope mount rifled slug barrel so i can use it during the deer hunting season too. For the cost of the extra barrels i have one shotgun that can do it all. BTW the mossberg 500 barrels fit the maverick 88. If i was going to purchase another 12ga pump shotgun i'd buy another maverick 88 for sure. Quote
Bass-minded Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 But, is cheap always good quality? I accept your point, there are good shotguns with low prices out there. Does wal*mart carry The maverick 88? Thanks. Quote
