TravisLovett Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I was reading an article in field and stream and it was very informative about berkely and there testing of artificial lures. During the article, a lab tech was quoted saying " our Frenzy line isnt selling to well due to marketing, but let me tell you there one of the biggest sleepers in bass fishing". Did anyone else read this? Does anyone have any info about the Frenzy line of crankbaits? Quote
Super User 5bass Posted March 1, 2007 Super User Posted March 1, 2007 In my opinion, the paint jobs on the Frenzy cranks and the overall design are pretty cheap looking but I do own some of them and have caught fish with them. Not sure how true the "sleeper" comment is but you never know. Quote
boondocks Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 There has been a few threads started on these lures in the past. If you do a search they should pop up. Personnally I have had some good luck with these baits. Its my go to lure on a particular lake that I fish that has very stained water with a good amount of flooded timber. They are suprisingly weedless with very loud rattles. I have a firetiger pattern thats has loads of fish to its credit. Fivebasslimit, are the lures you have older versions? The older ones did seem to have plain jane paint jobs but the newer ones are a little more detailed. Besides the firetiger pattern they come in natural patterns that ain't as appealing to fisherman as they are the fish. Do to the paint jobs they probably ain't the bait monkeys best friend either but they definately catch fish. I think so many of us are so used to paying an arm and a leg for crankbaits that when we see one that is cheap with a not so flashy paint job we think they won't work. IMO they are a very well built lure for the price. They have actually been around for quite some time and are just now really being talked about. I'd say buy a bunch while the price is still decent because if they are a "sleeper" and explode you can expect the price to rise considerably. Quote

Not sure how true the "sleeper" comment is but you never know. Do you have the old Frenzy baits or the newly redesigned baits with the scaled finish and glass eyes? The old Frenzy cranks that came in the plastic box did look a little cheap, but had durable paint finishes and held up surprisingly well. The new baits are high quality all the way around; they upgraded the finish, so now they not only have a durable finish, but a textured scale finish along with glass eyes. I would agree with the sleeper comment...I've been preaching their effectiveness for the past couple of years. The Frenzy medium divers are absolute dynamite in the prespawn; maybe my favorite prespawn crank. Ike hinted to the Frenzy's effectiveness when he won the Elite Series event on Guntersville, relying on a blue/chartreuse Frenzy medium diver for part of his limit each day. I would gladly pay $5 a peice for these baits, and I can't believe Berkley only wants $2.99 a piece for them, when Bomber, Storm, etc. charge a couple dollars more. I just purchased 50 of so of the medium divers at Cabelas when they put them on sale for $1.99. If you are going to be attending the Bass Pro Spring Classic in your area, they will be $1.99 there as well. I promise you all, if you will tie on a Frenzy medium diver when the water temp gets into the 50's, and go hit some rocky ledges or points...I PROMISE you will catch fish. Quote
The_Natural Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Craap Boondock...I think we must have been typing at the same time . I guess we are on the same page 8-) Quote
Stringjam Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I wouldn't be surprised. I'm a big crankbait fan.....I've got $20 baits from Ever Green, Megabass, LuckyCraft, Tiemco, so on and so on. I also have baits that only cost a fraction of that from Bandit, Storm (Wiggle Wart), Bomber Flat A (fantastic design). One thing in common - - they work - and that's what counts. I think one of the biggest sleeper cranks is the Lee Sisson Slim Willie (lower crank)......it's about $5 and has an action like a fat lady chasing a Twinkie. Great crank for digging through cover. That is good to hear about the Slim Willie. I scored a few on clearance, but they haven't been wet yet. Quote
Javelin_Venom Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I have always wondered why more people don't fish the Frenzies. I love them. It is my go to crankbait when the water color is right. I agree with fivebass, the color leaves something to be desired, but not because of the paint job. I just don't think they have a very wide variety. Firetiger is my personal favorite. You can't beat the price either. As for as the biggest sleeper in bass fishing, who knows. I always pick up a couple Frenzies when I am in need of a crankbait, but wish they'd have a few more colors. TravisLovett Posted March 1, 2007 Author Posted March 1, 2007 Ya, Ive always beed really impressed with there power bait and GULP! line. I just got one shallow minnow diver in the black back/ silver bottom and I might get it wet tomorrow. Ill give you my test of it when I do. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 1, 2007 Super User Posted March 1, 2007 I don't know abot the biggest "sleeper", but these things sure seem to be a well kept secret. They catch fish, and they are always on sale. Go figure. Maybe the less than perfect paint schemes have hurt sales. It hasn't in my case. I don't think a "perfect" paint job makes a crankbait any better. Except in the sense that it will catch fishermen better. What makes a crank work is action and vibration. We all know bass can see very well, much better than we can underwater, but do they have the brain power to process the fine detail exhibited by some of those high dollar cranks? I think it unlikely. Give me one that will hit the depth it claims, runs mostly true, with a little side to side "hunting" action,, and has a natural looking paint job and good hooks, and I'm happy with it. Now sell it for 2 bucks, and I'm all over it. That's the Frenzy divers. If you let the plain jane colors scare you off, you're missing out on a fish catching bait. This years models have better paint jobs. Cheers, GK Quote
ohiobassmaster93 Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 i think that the berkly gulp and the soft plastics line is one of the greatest worms around but their hard bait line just stinks. i have a couble of them and i've never cought anything on it and i used to use them but now i just let them sit their untill i see a desent time to use one but other than that i don't really like them Quote
boondocks Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I just read this on a walleye fishing website "rumor on the street has it some time this year the price of these lures is going to $5." DISCLAIMER = Remember this is a rumor take it for what its worth. Quote
Fishing Doug Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 The Frenzy lipless crankbait in Firetiger was my best producing lipless last year...and I fished nearly every brand (except for Lucky Craft) I could find in Firetiger just to do a little comparison. I picked up 5 of them at $1.99 each while Berkely had their "$5 rebate when you buy a minimum of $10 of Berkely product". So there you have it. You can get these things for a buck a peice.........
