YoungProdigy19 Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hi, I'm just going to get started making my own soft plastics. Something I've really wanted to do for ALONG time, not just for the sake it saves money, but that its also fun! But anyways. What are the basic things I need? I'm going to be ordering molds. And I won't be making my own plastic I will just be using old plastics I have and melting them down. So what tool's do I need? Thanks! Quote
loodkop Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 First is a heat source to melt your plastic. Perhaps the easiest way to start will be a microwave. Use a pyrex cup to heat the plastic in. There are lots of threads on this here on this forum and a search will give more detailed answers on various aspects of the pouring hobby. Just be warned before you start that you will get addicted and will not save money as there will always be a new mold you "need". Working only with remelts only will soon be limiting as well and you will start buying virgin plastisol, coloring, glitter and various additives. Don't hesitate to ask questions as this can shorten the learning curve. Good luck. Quote
Bass Dude Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 There is a lot of information on this forum that should answer most of your questions. Also, tackleunderground.com is the best forum around for all types of lure building. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 What are the basic things I need?I'm going to be ordering molds. And I won't be making my own plastic I will just be using old plastics I have and melting them down. So what tool's do I need? Thanks! First when you melt down old plastics you will wind up with greens and browns as the various colors blend so I strongly suggest that you buy some medium plastisol when you make your initial order for molds. As stated you will need a microwave oven ($40 for a cheap one or check flea mkts.) or electric hot plate ($15-20). With the microwave you'll need some 1 cup Pyrex pitchers. With the hot plate some pans with thick bottoms. You will need some colorants and some glitter when you make your order. A very important item is gloves. Molten plastisol is around 350°F and will take your skin right off. It is very easy to scorch plastisol so you also should buy some heat stabilizer. Since many items you may want will have a higher shipping fee than the item itself, take your time and find the site that has what you want so you can get it all and only have one shipping fee. Some places you may want to look at are Barlow's, Jann's, Lurecraft, and Bear's. There are many more if you want to do a google search. Quote
