Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 19, 2012 Global Moderator Posted January 19, 2012 This forum is full of lots of very helpful people that will give you any information they can. Most of us try not to give information on equipment that we haven't personally used. I have personally never even picked up any of the reels you listed, therefore I'm not exactly qualified to make a suggestion. As far as your second post, you catch more flies with honey, just saying. nightmid Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 well i wasnt trying to be rude just seen all the views and thought it was odd that no one posted and i dont have any exp with any of these reels either most of the ones i have are revos and alike just need input on a lower model well price wise for a rod that wont be used alot and dont want to spend revo type of money on i have been leaning towards the pinnacle matrix xlt 10 bearings and all the reviews i have read were good just want more input on any of these Quote
Super User deep Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 I haven't tried any of those reels, but I'd get an used Curado B5 or B38. They go for around $60. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 I'd want a reel with a 5.1 gear ratio. Some of the reels you have listed don't have that ratio. I'd look at a Lew's speed spool in 5.1 If the gear ratio is not an issue look at the Citica. Quote

This is my 2nd time looking. First time there were no replies. I wondered which reel guys were suggesting. I've never handled any on the list either. nightmid, I doubt many on here have tried any you listed. I think most would rather buy used and get a better reel. I would keep an eye on the classifieds, and for sales. You can buy twice the reel for what some of the above reels cost new. Do a little research on here. There have been many threads regarding the best low cost reels. My personal experience with lower cost reels has been with Cabela's Prodigy (a reel I can highly recommend), a $100 purchased for $60 on sale. Also picked up a couple used Trions based on the excellent reviews on it. Another $100 reel that I got for $45 and $40. Got them at the end of the season so I haven't used either yet. I am expecting to be thrilled with them....for their price point. You can find used Shimano "greenies" from about $50-$80 depending on condition. If you need it soon, then congratulations. I won't be able to fish for several more months. Quote

I won't be able to fish for several more months. I haven't used any of the reels you asked about either but I can recommend the Prodigy which I do have. I also have a Daiwa Exceler, a Quantum Accurist PT 501, a Quantum Kinetic PT, a Quantum Accurist PT, a Quantum Energy PT and a Quantum Energy PTXM all off ebay for less than $100. I picked the Prodigy up from Cabelas on sale for $60 as well. The Shimano Caenan looks like a pretty good reel and haven't fished or even handled it but saw it put through its paces on an episode of WFN's Getting School'd. The reel is $90 at BPS but I would check ebay as well. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 I have the Optimus XLT The reel is new to me, but my initial rating is a DEAD SOLID 10! http://www.pinnaclefishing.com/shop/p-78-optimus-xlt.aspx#page=page-1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 Never tried any of em. Heck haven't heard of any but three of em. The Okuma Alumina is a good reel, least the older ones are. Try looking at pawn shops they pretty much give reels away. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 well in the market When I first jumped into the market for a cheap baitcaster I looked at the ones you mentioned, then read tons of reviews on them and realized they wern't worth the price/performance/quality. I figured I'd look for a brand more people recommended but found at better prices, and well it was worth it. I suggest you save more or spend more for a better reel, sorry it's not the answer you're looking for but it's the better option. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 The reels you have listed are inexpensive but will not have a long life. The Prodigy or BPS Pro Qualifier on sale or a higher end second hand reel will serve you much better. Quote
Packard Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I'd suggest you get a used Curado B5 or B3.8. If I had to choose one of those I'd go with the Caius. If you can find a new Shimano Chromica 100b somewere they are a great reel for the money. They are an older discountinued reel but will come up on auction sites every now and then. Sam performance as my Curado 200e but just not as light and almost as smooth. Quote
NCLifetimer Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I personally have the Abu Garcia Silver max you listed. Its a great reel for the price IMO, even better after i cleaned it. It makes a noise when casting even with clean bearings, but I don't mind. Personally, since it seems like you want a low budget reel, Id get either a Basspro Pro Qualifier in a 5:1 gear ratio or a lews speed spool in a similar ratio. Id spend the extra 50 dollars or so now, you'll be glad you did. Quote
A-Rob Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 The reels you have listed are inexpensive but will not have a long life. The Prodigy or BPS Pro Qualifier on sale or a higher end second hand reel will serve you much better. I agree. The other thing I'd like to add is I used to try to throw cranks on a cheaper baitcast reel and had a lot of trouble with backlashes. I stepped up the quality and no longer had the problem. So it may be worth saving a bit longer and getting something that'll work nicely and not be frustrating for you. Quote
nightmid Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 well did more looking and alot of guys on here are using a h2o from acadamy and they say it is the best budget reel out i have looked at them and put them in the top of my list i checked ebay and found a few shimanos and bps ones Quote

Save your cash and buy a better quality reel. You will be glad you did. If no one has said it, welcome to the forum !!! Quote
