Nitro 882 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I'm seriously ticked. The stupidity exibited by our elected officials is mind boggleing and insulting on a personal level. As I understand it, the EPA itself declared that there was insufficient evidence to warrant a ban on lead terminal tackle. Mass department of wildlife itself published an attempted explanation of the "lead ban" in which they declared that there were 32 nesting pairs of loons in the state.(The whole freakin state.) Over 2/3's of those were in either the Quabbin or Wachusetts reservoirs. They explain that a nesting pair of loons requires 1000 acres of water and very little human contact to take up residence and successfully reproduce. I don't know about you but, most if not all the lakes I fish in Mass are less than 600 acres. Not big enough for any of the 64 freakin Mass loons to consider, according to the Mass studies ,so lead should not be a problem for the loons in these lakes since THERE ARE NO FREAKIN LOONS AROUND ANYWAY. In the states explanation, they claim that this ban should not be a big problem as "there are many ready alternative to lead being offered by tackle suppliers/manufacturers." Well, lets forget for a moment that , by my recent inventory of my tackle, I will have to throw away well over $600 in lead terminal tackle. I could ,single handedly, wipe out the entire population of loons ,yes all 64, in Mass. Talk about "shock and awe". I have looked on line and just today visited Bass Pro Shops and there is basically nothing available to replace my lead gear. Enough from me---what say you.
jig Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 i say keep on using your lead !enoughs enough with this state.Tree huggers r taken over.
GrundleLove Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 "throw away your lead stuff" dude seriously? or you could continue to use and literally see NO differnce at all..why even get upset? who is going to do ANYTHING to enforce/care
Nitro 882 Posted January 18, 2012 Author Posted January 18, 2012 Why doesn't Massachusetts ban LEAD BULLETS? I understand LEAD BULLETS KILL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, its not politically correct to care about people. KISS MY BASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
grampa1114 Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 So I assume that you think this ban is enforceable.....well if you do, and are worried about 'getting caught' some alternatives are Timmy Tom's Leadfree Jig Co. and Leadfree Jigheads.com. I've used both and they have good prices and very good products.
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 My guess is that law enforcement will be out in force when the season gets underway in earnest, particularly at the more popular ramps. I'd expect them to go through every boat with a fine tooth comb, checking for banned lead products, as much for revenue enhancement as law enforcement. What I'd like to know is this. Does the mere presence of these products on the boat constitute "intent to use them" on Mass waters? How will it affect Wallum, which is in both Mass and RI, and as I understand it, governed by RI regs? I'll be getting a Rhode Island license this year. Even though my boat, trailer, and tow vehicle are registered in MA, does having a Rhode Island fishing license exclude me from the MA lead ban when fishing Wallum?
grampa1114 Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I certainly think that 'making money' was the farthest thing from the Massachusetts legislators minds when they concocted this farce. Only the welfare of those 64 loons was considered...........right........If that were truly the case then only Loon infested waters should fall under the ban......I still don't think that those (insert derogatory term of your choice) will spring for a big enough budget to put more Game Wardens to work enforcing the law....again more idealistic drivel at the taxpayers expense. Super User Jigfishn10 Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 Does anyone know what the penalty is if you do get caught fishing lead? I thought I read a license suspension for first time offenders, but I'm not sure of that nor do I know what the penalties are for multiple violations/offenses?
Super User A-Jay Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 Might be less than switching everything to tungsten. btw - if a bait has a painted head - might be lead, might be tungsten. Are the authorities equipt with "Lead Detectors" that will accurately identify the presence of said material, or are we "using the force" ? - I'm just saying A-Jay
Super User J Francho Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 I think the part that is really silly is putting anglers at odds with DNR/Econ officers. Seems to me, that whole, "we are your eyes and ears on the waters" thing will evaporate. 1
grampa1114 Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Keep in mind that it's not the Warden's fault that they changed the rules. Just like (if I may) It's not the Players fault if the Refs make a bad call. They are just doing their jobs. Which leads us to good people continuing to do good things.
Super User deaknh03 Posted January 20, 2012 Super User Posted January 20, 2012 I am feeling very kind today, so all of you Mass guys are welcome to ship me your lead up here to NH. I will ensure that it is taken care of (put to good use). Hurry before I'm not feeling charitable.
grampa1114 Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 You are the answer to a prayer...just put your address and phone number up here and we'll get in touch...

I thought I read in the law that there is no restriction for carrying lead, even on deck. or maybe a lack of that wording. I will still keep all of my lead for when I fish out of state. the worst part of this whole ban is that tungsten(one alternative has very bad environmental impacts also). I can wait to see what happens when they find out that it's the hooks the birds swallow that are killing them. then what are we gonna do? rubber hooks?
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 21, 2012 Super User Posted January 21, 2012 My reason for stating that it will end up being used as revenue enhancement goes back decades ago. The registry inspectors used to be out on the roadways, enforcing traffic laws along with the state and local police. However, you rarely saw them except at inspection time. Back then your car had to be inspected twice a year, in April and October, if I'm not mistaken. On the first day of the following months, May and November, the inspectors and the state police were out in force, looking for cars with expired stickers. If caught, you paid a fine for driving a car without a valid inspection sticker. Since those days, the registry inspectors' job is basically doing drivers' license tests. You never see 'em lurking on the roadways looking for cars with a headlight or tailight that does not work, or loud mufflers. Since they went to annual inspections, where the month you have to have your vehicle inspected goes by the last number on your license plate, the practice of cops focussing on expired inspection stickers has vanished.
jig Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 i dont think the law states u cant have lead on board or your tackle boxes.U could just say u have it for fishing other stater.Just have some tungsten or whatever is legal near by and cut your line if u get caught by surprise.Kill a loon in the processs !

I enjoy my time on the water too much to have to look over my shoulder all the time. My greatest concern was not being able to find an alternative to my lead jigs. I was searching on-line for "tungsten" and the only thing that came up was Keitech. They(Japanese) offer tungsten jigs but the largest has only a #2 hook. Not big enough for me. Thanks to your tip, I just ordered a little over $100 in "Tin Alloy" bass jigs, weighted swim bait hooks, shakey head jigs and drop shot weights. I'm still ticked but at least I can continue my favorite method of bass fishing---the jig/pig.
grampa1114 Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 My pleasure and you are welcome to join the get together discussion as well.
