Today i got a citica very cheap from dicks sporting goods, it was on sale and it was the last one in stock so they took more off the price. I got the floor model. it was in perfect condition. The reel works perfectly and smoothly. But when the reel is held horizontally(like normal) and you reel in it makes a loud geary noise. If anyone knows what i should do please tell me!

The problem is probably minor, but I would take it back.

Shimano will replace the reel.

Never had that particular problem. I used to have a couple of Diawas that occasionally wouldn't disengage when I cast them and started reeling. That caused a "geary" sound sometime. First, I would contact Shimano, as mentioned above. They'll probably replace it.

If you end up trying to do anything yourself, I'd take it apart and make sure everything has lube so it can operate smoothly. After that, it might take a full disassembly to see if all of the parts are there and in the proper place (probably going to take an hour or 2).

If you pull the side plate off and pull the spool out, sometimes where the spool goes into the drive side of the reel the bronze pinion gear needs a little lube. Put some grease on the spool shafts and put it together and try it. If not, call Shimano.

Not recommended. Shimano even says that they need to be dry. The tolerances are so tight that any friction will hinder proper operation.

Thank you guys. I am going to call Shimano on tuesday when they are open. Even though the reel is last years model do you think they will still replace it?

My Citica 201E started making noise this fall, it had been fine all summer. I just sent it to Shimano, I'll let you know how that goes when I hear from them and/or get it back.

I would tell them to send you the new curado, since it's almost identical to the citica 200e lol

Sad but true

Hmmm I'm sure they may just do a quick repair regardless of the model.

Great reel for the price otherwise. I have a tackle shop near me that does shimano work under warranty, perhaps you have one as well?

Willing to bet the reel was sold and was a return because of the gear noise.

Over a season the original grease on the gear teeth is probably dried out.

Send it into Shimano, DVT, or any of the Reel Mechanics here and have it deep serviced..

Ya, if it was a display model it's probably been cranked on some. See what shimano has to say and let me know if you want me to take a look.

Shimano said that i can try to take it apart to see what the problem is if i am good with reels, which im not :P, or i can send it to them and they will take a look at it, since i got it yesterday im still under warrantee all i will have to pay for is shipping both ways (hopefully) but incase you were wondering i got the reel as a compete steal, $45!! who would pass that up??

If you send it off you might see if they'll remove the bushing throw a bearing on the driveshaft, assuming you have a 200E. It does not make a huge difference but the bearing is cheap and they'll be down in there anyway.

The Shimano 5x9x3mm bearing pack isn't cheap, MSRP is $16.00ea.

OK, you bought a new reel. It has a warranty. Demo or not, it should work fine. Otherwise it should be repaired or replaced by Shimano. Call them: 1-877-577-0600.

I don't know, $16 isn't too bad. You can get the same bearing from another source, such as boca, for much less. I snagged up one of those DSG closeout Citicas for $59, flushed/oiled the spool bearings and tossed a ball bearing on the driveshaft. I admit I stole the bearing from a parts reel so the cost was basically free. Poor Man's Curado G.

But yeah, if you don't want to do the work yourself or pay to have it done just send it in for warranty work.

Yes I am quoteing myself LOL....just got the reel back today from Shimano. Smooth as new, they replaced the main drive gear, pinion gear, and a ball bearing part# BNT2170. Along with a clean and lube job...for $25.

Just wondering, how long did it take for you to get your reel back?
