Pig-N-Jig

We have recently put out 50 pieces of cover in different spots for running and gunning in tournaments. What is your favorite Pig-N-Jig bait and presentation for attacking these pieces of cover? Any ideas on boat position other baits or any opinions on the matter are appreciated.

I always fish a brush pile from outside to in.

I use my Big O Brush Jig. I build it for that application.

Trailer, I use several typse. I use some Rage Craws and some hand pours I make.

I will always attack the structure in a circle pattern and completely fish the whole structure from all angles and throw past the structure and come back.

As far as the jig and pig I buy Strike King football headed bare jigs and from there I make my own.

Ok thanks for your info guys. We set up the structure so that we can fish 360 degrees and we did everything we could to make sure that the cover is standing straight up. Some of the structure is Magnolia trees, have you guys ever used that?

I'm not so sure I would use the football style head to fish brush. I would look at a flippin style head that works through the limba and branches. Any trailer that gives you a controlled fall is in order. SO's head style would be my choice for brush. I agree with with outside in and work the entire perimeter. 50 pieces ? Some one has been busy.

I routinely try to approach and fish that kind of cover from down wind and / or down current ( providing there is any).

That way, it's easier to keep from being blown down onto the fish and my bait will approach the fish head first which may be a more natural presentation.

I like throwing a jig...my favorite being a locally hand made jig with a zoom super chunk or chunk jr or a zoom fat albert double tail, or a netbait paca craw.

I would also throw a worm like a zoom mag II.

If the fish are suspeded a bit and don't want to eat a worm/jig off the bottom it is hard to beat a weightless senko

Good stuff guys...yes we have been busy! It is tough to find the cover even with great electronics. When you put it in the water boy it really gets small. I have to try the senko as well.

I've always been one to flip a 3/8 or 1/2 oz jig in there, starting from the outside and working in. However, over the course of the day, you should be able to pattern a more exact location as to where the fish will be holding on a piece of cover. For instance, one day all the fish you catch could come from the heart of the cover, next to the biggest stump or thickest cover. On the contrary, they could be on the outside edge. The first few bushes or pieces of cover you fish, pick them apart thoroughly. If you happen to stick a fish, then pay attention to where the fish was located and try to pattern their location. On a certain day, the fish will mostly be on a certain part of the cover, not randomly dispersed throughout. Therefore, keep the pattern in your head and only fish that certain area and then move on to the next bush and repeat. This approach will make your run and gun approach even faster because you wont have to sit and pick apart every little part of the bush after you have a pattern going, but instead allow you to make one or two precise pitches into the most likely areas and then motor over to the next piece of cover.
