NCbassmaster4Life Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Is anyone currently enrolled in college and fishes in a college bass club..i'm transitioning from the military sometime soon and am looking at going to a college with a bass club any input would be helpful. Quote
NCLifetimer Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Lots of colleges have teams. Go to FLW and look at ranks. Most clubs get either 10 or 8 spots for national tournaments. North Carolina recently got moved to the southern division of FLW(guessing by your username you might be looking at a north carolina school). some schools like NCSU have large clubs, so competition to move on is tough. ECU for instance has a smaller club. Larger/organized clubs go by point systems, the anglers that preform the best move on. Having a boat and knowing the lakes is almost essential to being able to qualify for the spots in schools that have larger clubs. Their are other circuits that colleges fish besides FLW, but its the big one with the biggest payouts as fair as I know. FLW is structures as= qualifying events, regional championships and national championship. usually schools get to send 1 boat 2 people (boater and non boater) to each qualifying event. the best five boats from the qualifying event in the region move on to regional championships. best 5 from each division move on to nationals for the big money (100,000 dollars). The southeastern division has 5 qualifying events, so up to 10 people from each school get a chance to win big. My advice, decide what you want to major in and than look at schools. Most schools already have a club, if not you can start one at the school and enter collegiate tournament circuits. If you have any other questions drop me a PM. Quote
NCLifetimer Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Oh ya, not sure how important the tournament aspect is to you, but some tournament circuits have an age limit. FLW might be 25, not sure if this applies or is relevant to you thou. Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Yeah NCSU was my priorty because of engineering...not sayin im the best but most of the lakes in the piedmont I know them with my eyes closed I am very proficiant at catching bass in the 3-6lb range no problem...the big ones will take time cause im a little rusty..been on too many deployments. jeremyt Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 From an old military guy, I think your first priority should be school. See how that goes for a semester before worrying about fishing in a collegiate tournament. You may be very "proficient" at catching fish, but the GI bill would be a horrible thing to waste. Just saying Either way, good luck to you. Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 Most of my schooling for my Bach...is almost finished. Quote
jeremyt Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Most of my schooling for my Bach...is almost finished. What are you majoring in? That would answer a lot of questions pertaining to where you want to go to school and if they have a bass club or not. Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Engineering with 6 years of experience a log with spec ops experience. Now it's time to get back to my passion and be famous. Quote
jeremyt Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 If engineering is your major and you are staying in NC then I would be looking at NC State or ECU. Good luck. Quote
HEEF Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 you can defiantly still fish while in school man. The FLW college circuit isn't anything grueling. Heck I played college football, had a job, carried 18 hours. you'll be fine. Of course that could be why I didn't do so great in the College tournament circuit! Its still a blast to fish in waters you have noooo clue about! If you want to come up north I know Fairmont State has engineering and someone from our team is always in the hunt for the National Championship. Hope that helps my friend! Quote
Christina Maria Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 If engineering is your major and you are staying than it will superb & fine ! Quote

Only one downside to fishing in college, I will not be eligible to fish in any tournements....that's sum bs, especially when i'm going to be a veteran. Quote
bweave09 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Only the flw has an age limit. There was a guy last year at the Collegiate Bass Championship at Kentucky Lake that fished for Indiana state or something that was in his 50's. Also another guy fishes for University of North Alabama who served and is now going back to school in his mid 30's. Quote

I didn't know they had an age limit. If that is what you are meaning you won't be eligible to fish tournaments. Its a club team for us so it only has a few rules. I think thats how most teams are set up at other schools Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Hey I don't know if anyone can help me, I am going to university of alabama and I know they have a bass team I just can not find any up to date info. Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 For B.A.S.S. it's an age limit to fish tournements and to be eligible. Quote

Contact your universities Club Sports Office, they can give you the necessary contact information. All college fishing teams are club teams, atleast all of the offical ones. Quote
jrotureau Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Plenty of trails other than FLW that allow any age range to fish competitively. College BASS, Boat US, Collegiate Bass Championships, etc. I'm at Georgia Southern, senior civil eng. major and have been fishing tournaments all throughout my college career. I've seen military veterans as well as citizens who are 25+ at these tournaments. There are plenty of opportunities. Find a school with a program that fits you and most D-1 and D-1AA schools have teams now. This sport has grown exponentially in the last 5 years. Good luck! Quote
