Hey guys. I was wondering if you can recommend me some crankbaits and other lures. I fish with pretty much all plastics right now and would really like to start throwing cranks/spinners/jigs etc. The choices are just overwhelming. Diving,Countdown,Original,Xrap, not even sure where to start . Do alot of you bank fisherman throw spinners and crankbaits? Seems like it would be a snag nightmare. Are swimbaits a possibility from shore also? Sorry for the noobness.

I throw everything from shore that I would from a boat...The key is to learn the bottom of the body of water your fishing, takes time I know, but will be valuable later, you can use a weighted T rig worm for that.

As far as cranks go, get Shallow divers, i.e. 1-3' Swimbaits..yup, get the floaters..jigs, definitly, use the football heads with weed guards, and yup, you'll lose a few, nature of the beast..Spinner baits, the key is to keep your rod tip High, and retrive as to keep the spinner bait in the upper part of the water, the lighter weight spinner baits, i.e 1/4 & 3/8 oz work best for this. I never fish lippless cranks, i.e. rat l traps ect, to easy to lose in the weeds ect..

As you gain experince at your lake/pond, you'll find out what works, unfortunatly by trail and error, been there done that..lol

I would recomend that you use a spinning rig to start with, use a good quality line, such as Yozuri Hybrid Ultrasoft, it's a copoylmer and very strong for pullin some of the lures out of the weeds.

I'm sure others will add to this, I'm tired and can't think very well..lol

hey thanks hammer, just what I wanted to hear. About the spinning rod. I just ditched my wally world rod for the BPS extreme combo I have it rigged with some 30 test PowerPro. I kinda got stuck in a rut with plastics because thats what I caught my first fish on, so I just use it and use it, but dang alot of these lures look like fun to fish with.

Spinning Rig - Shad Raps and light crankbaits on 8 pound mono.

Baitcaster Rig - Anything else, such as Bandits 100 or 200 for starters on 12 to 17 pound mono.

Have fun and let us know how you do.

By the way, be sure to balance your baitcaster reel with your crankbait.

Rig the baitcaster rig with your lure, point rod tip to 11 o'clock, and release reel so that crank drops to the floor (avoid carpet).

Using the spool tension knob, have the spool stop spinning when the crankbait hits the floor. Be sure you have set the drag to where you want it, too.

You can then adjust it when you get on the water or in the boat as you change lures.

If you do this correctly, the spool will stop when the crank hits the water as you cast it.

And remember, swing the rod to the left or right when setting a treble hook.

Always bring a needle nose pliers with you to remove hooks and be extra careful as many of us have had the hooks slammed into our fingers or hands when the fish shakes as you are removing the hooks.

Have fun.  :)

When I fish from the bank the cranks I throw are spinnerbaits, topwaters, and shallow runners.  Usually Mann's 1- minus and poppers.

Do yourself a favor, get 1 Ratl trap or rapala clackin rap, one DT-4 or DT-6, 1 spinnerbait and some type of topwater be it a sammy I'd go for a heddon zara spook.  Should be around $25-$30 for this stuff

This will give you the diversity you need for now, and let you see what all the different lures are like!

Spinnerbaits are probably one of the best baits to throw from shore. They don't hang-up as readily as other baits. Lipless crankbaits are another bait I use when I fish from shore. Rapala Shallow Shad Raps, and Bomber Square A's are productive baits also.

Read Sam's post again, and follow it to the letter. It's very good advice........Great post Sam.

For those hawgs that you're BOUND to catch on trebled lures, don't swing 'em. Wear 'em down, then pull 'em near the bank, place your hand under the fish, right under its stomach, and lift it out of the water. The fish should remain calm until you can get the hooks out. Then, grip and grin!!!!

for freshwater, i (at this point) always fish from shore....

i throw everything myself, from plastics to large swimbaits....

go with some classic jointed rapala's (they always do the trick)....

shallow cranks...... baby 1 minus... baby bass

cant go wrong with beetle spins (trust me, they slay'em) and only a buck a piece.

a nice popper or two

....and if you start throwin the swimbaits (i regularly toss mattlures hardgills, spro bbz1's, strike kings king kong... although yet to catch a fish on this, and now the strike king sexy swimmer, along with a panther martin vivif hardhead........

invest in some strong braided line, trust me...... it will save your expensive lures from meeting the fate of a murky death.........most of the time at least!
