I finally caught a bass with a jig and craw!!

I was determined to catch fish with jigs this year, and today I caught TWO. I used an Eakins 5/16 jig with a summer craw paca chunk with the first fish, and then a front pulled in and I switched to a 3/8 black and blue booyah with a black and blue chunk. The fish I caught were larger than the fish I normally pull out of the lake I was at. Is that normal, or did I just get lucky?

My question is, do I stick with the craws for trailers or go with a large grub like a Fat Albert when the water cools?

It is normal to catch larger fish on jigs. Most of my big fish this year have been on jigs.

I stick with craw trailers. My favorites are ragetail lobsters and gycb flappin hogs.

You might have a hard time putting down the jig once you start catching a bunch of fatties with it.

WTG...I use the ragetail craws, or a modifiyed gybc hula..You can also use a 4 1/2" worm too. I like the craws cuz they slow down the drop, gives the fish more time to strike..

Congrats on your first jig fish,  as far as trailers I always use a craw trailer, unless swimming it, then I sometimes use grubs, broken worms, etc.  Jigs are one of my favorite ways to fish, especially for smallies.  I use paca craw trailers almost exclusively, and typically the jig will produce bigger fish on average than any other lure in my box.

i too want to learn to fish a jig....but fishing from the bank...every time i have tried a jig i lose it within 5 casts..  :'(

I caught my first jig fish two years ago and i havent looked back. I still like the spinnerbaits, buzz and cranks but jigs are my favs. I like the Netbait trailers anything paca craw you can't beat for my money. Stan Slone or Blaze are my go to jigs.

Are you using Weedless jigs..? What are they getting stuck on..?

The Key is to fish em Slow, if the bottom has rocks ect wher the jig can get hung up on, Never pull hard to free them, and don't reel in any slack..gentely lift the rod tip as high as you can, and gentely pull at a stready pace. Knowing what the bottom has will allow you to lose way fewer lures, it takes time, but well worth it.
