KevO Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Anyone own one of these? I finally decided a tin boat would be best for me. I found an 05 18' Polarkraft w/ a 150 yamaha vmax for 13K at a dealer. The motor only has 62 hrs on it, with a little bit of warranty left. It has 2 gps units and a 24v 70# minn kota all terrain tm. I don't know anyone that owns a polar kraft and have only seen a couple on the water. Any advice would be great. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 8, 2012 Super User Posted January 8, 2012 One of my great friends and fishing buddies fishes out of a polar kraft. It is his 2nd or 3rd one and the only aluminum boat he will own. He loves them and has been fishing out of aluminum boats for 20+ years. I have an aluminum boat, but did not go with polar kraft even though that it what I looked for at first per his recommendations. Not a ton of used ones around and the local dealer I went to was a jerk, so I actually traveled 2 states away and 4 hrs to pick up my new boat at a different dealership, and only save $100. But it was worth it to me to buy from someone who appreciated my business! You should check them out as well. They are much closer to you, right down in Alabama. Backwoods landing. With 13k budget you should be able to get a real nice tin boat! Jeff Quote
SAC2 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 my friend has one and its a great boat. 16 footer that was actually custom made by one of the guys that worked in the factory. actually was "downgraded" for our jersey waters because what a lake is to us is a pond for most and by the time you get full rpms youre already on the other side of the lake. the boat has great storage and was well though out for being a small boat. KevO Posted January 15, 2012 Author Posted January 15, 2012 Ok so I bought this boat! It's my first boat now I have a couple questions. First, can I run regular 87 octane in the Yamaha HPDI? Should I only use Yamalube or will any TCW3 oil be ok (I was wrong about the warranty it has expired)? What about stabill ethanol treatments or quikleen, should I use these products or are there better choices? I bought a transom saver since one was not included, it extends from 24-36", how long do I need to set it? This boat does not have a jack plate installed, do I need one? Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 16, 2012 Super User Posted January 16, 2012 I would assume the 87 would be ok, but check Yamaha website or dealer first! I would always use the motor company oil. Not much more expensive and they cant ever blame problems on other products. ALWAYS use stabil ethanol treatment(some use seafoam). You must use judgment on the transom saver length. Hard to tell with no pictures. you will need to run the boat, but I doubt you will need a jack plate. Does it have tilt/trim? Jeff Quote
