Four fricken weeks of planning down the drain. My wife is about to turn 30, the way she's taking it you'd think she was turning a hundred. (Some of you dirty old men wish you were 30 again don't cha?) Anyway, she mentioned a few years back that she has always wanted a surprise party. One in which she is truely surprised. Well I had it worked out finally. She was none the wiser about any of it. We were going to have it this upcoming Sunday. Under the guise that my parents were having a late anniversary party. Two more days to go and I'm in the home stretch and she expects nothing. Then last night I made my fatal error. I invited her parents. It didn't even take her mom 24 hours after finding out to get completely obliterated, and call my wife to ask if she knew she was having a surprise party on Sunday. I honestly can say I was completely speechless. I wanted to call to the whole thing off but my wife says that only hurts her not my MIL (who has now been informed there is no party). I figure I'll just let everyone else enjoy themselves and they can find out about it later.

Join the club bro...... grin and bear it. IDK if you have kids, but what till you see how "interesting" thing get when you make them a grandmother.

You know, there is a certain level of respect you would normally be expected to give your wife's parents....Similar to your own parents.

I've had to step WAY, WAY, WAY outside that ONE time, and things are much better now. My brother told me I would have to do it-as he had to with his MIL.

My mother did the same thing to my wife for my 30th B-day party. It wasn't going to be as big a to do, as what you had planned, but my wife is STILL not happy about it, two years later.

MIL's, can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em :devil3: I'm not even going to start on mine because there isn't enough time in the day. I try to get along with the woman, I really do, but that is one person that gets under my skin like nobody I've ever met can.

My bassin' partner's MIL decided to host Easter dinner for their whole family a few years back, and announced she was serving ham. As he and his wife walked through the door, they noticed no aroma of ham. They found his MIL lounging on the couch, hittin' the sauce. When asked why they didn't smell the telltale scent of ham, she replied "I didn't feel like buying/cooking one, so I made sloppy joes."

He was PIZZED. He marched out the door, and found an open Pick-n-Save. He bought one of the last hams they had, and cooked it at his MIL's house. At dinner he didn't eat any of her food, just a huge plate of ham.

There is a darn good reason why Mother-in-Law jokes are so popular, but all of us guys need to remember several things.

1/3 of those jokes deal with the woman that raised you, and another 1/3 is (or will be) aimed at the woman you married! :o

And the other 1/3?

Wellllll, I thought that was self-explanatory. When you married her daughter, she became yours!

The woman who raised your wife. There are two mothers-in-law (notice the proper spelling of the plural of mother-in-law) in every marriage. The more appropriate would be 25% involving the wife, 25% involving the husband and the other 50% involving the two mothers-in-law.

Raider, I'm going to make an assumption here. It is not the first time that MIL got obliterated. My guess would be that it happens from time to time. What's the old saying? "If more than one person knows something, it's not a secret." It's not uncommon for an inebriated person to become a blabbermouth. I understand your frustration. Don't be too harsh on the old ba.......er, mother-in-law. She may still wish your wife was attached to her apron strings.

Consider this. A mother-in-law will always be your spouse's mother, but your spouse may not always be your spouse.

The expression about "marrying into a family" is not off the mark.

It's funny with all the divorces now-a-days, you are now "awarded" with more than one MIL.

I have two.

The one, that is so bad I shouldn't even get into it, that I had to put in her place, and the other who my wife respects much more than her actual mother.

My wife's step mom is great. She isn't like me at all. She's all artsy and kinda weird, but she is a good person, and they stay out of our business unless we ask them to be in it.

My wife, is my second wife. BOTH marriages my mom, has been the "MIL" that I'm sure they talk about to their friends.

I'm blessed with great in-laws. My wife and I enjoy spending time with both sets of our parents. They let us live life, and don't offer an opinion on the decisions we make, unless we ask them.

I'm one of the lucky ones too...My in-laws seem great. Only have problems with one,but my wife & entire family has problems with her too. I won't allow her in the house anymore, she's banned from this house...LOL. My wife agrees with me and gives me no grief over it.

Same here. I actually spend about 2 months of the year with my MIL at her summer home, and my wife is usually not there but for about a week of the time. I bring my boat up and fish on their lake everyday, help her with whatever she needs done around the place, enjoy her company VERY much and help her entertain whatever company comes along. We are really great friends.

I really do feel for all the guys with awful MIL's. Far too common to read about it. Has to suck.

Homie don't say that. I've heard the expression before but still. Some may call me shallow, but I told my wife if she EVER gets that big I'll leave her. I'm sorry but I'm at 294 lbs. right now and she (my Mil) out weighs me. And before I get ripped on its not a condition it pure and simple laziness. Granted she is losing some weight now, but still.

If your mother was your MIL that would mean you married your sister.

My late MIL was one of the most wonderful women I have ever met. She was a much finer woman than my own mother. I called her Mom, and I miss her to this day.

Kent, that's bad. Just bad.

I'm one of the lucky ones, I get along great with my mother in law. She's a pretty awesome lady.
