Smoke Pt

Well, I have waited a year since the smoke PT has come out, having not been willing to pay the price originally. Yet, when I go into the local BPS to the reel counter it's still by far the smoothest reel there. I think I am going to go ahead and pop for one during the fishing classic when they have the reel trade in. However; I have heard such bad things about the longevity of Quantum's that I thought I would check with you guys first. anybody have or have had a PT and what are your thoughts on this reel?

I have 5 Quantum PT reels with an older Accurist PT 501,a newer Accurist PT, a older Energy PT, a Energy PTXM and a Kinetic PT and not a problem with any of them. The Energy PT was purchased used 2 years ago and after a good cleaning has been flawless. The Accurist PT 501 is roughly 4 years old and it's time for a cleaning but it has performed well also. Those are just the casting reels and on the spinning side I have 4-5 spinning model PT reels as well that have all performed great. I haven't had any experience with the Smoke but if I was in the market for another casting reel it would be at the top of my list. I will be adding the Smoke spinning reel to my arsenal during the BPS classic with the reel trade in as well.

I have had a smoke pti (spinning) for about 6 months and have used it pretty hard with no problems. I have had problems with Energy PTis in the past. The anti-reverse goes out and is a very common problem. It happened on 2 of the 3 energys I had. It's actually a very easy and cheap fix, had my local tackle guy replace it for $20, but it still sucks. I am really happy with the Smoke, my biggest issue with the Energys was weight. I also may be picking up some PTs soon.

I have 10 "old" Accurists that are still working fine. Clean & lube at least once a year.

4- AC401C, 5- 501CX and 1- 501PT. Plus a KVD 601 and a new model Energy PT.

Actually 2 yrs. ago I bought a new TE1161 and then sold it because I liked the Accurist better

Those Accurists with the aluminum frame are bulletproof. I have five of them, and they are absolute workhorses. Those are my pitching/flipping reels and get some pretty harsh use. I've caught two snakeheads over 37" (both potential world records, I've since come to find out...) flipping my golf course pond. If you have never hooked a 10+ lb snakehead on ~10 feet of 65lb braided line, it is hard to explain the experience. Something like setting the hook on a bucking bronco. I also use these in the saltwater (didn't want to use my curados, chronarchs, etc) catching fish that fight much harder than any bass you will ever encounter.

I have two smoke reels and could not be happier with those. NOTHING outcasts this reel.

I am not as impressed with Quantum's other offerings outside of the Accurist/Smoke models.

I love my smoke spinning combo and casting combo. They are light, cast very well, and have experienced no issues to this point. Fish in avatar pic was caught on my smoke spinning rod and reel, 8 lb test and it handled flawlessly.

I have 2 Catalyst spinning reels, and 6 Quantum bait casters: an old Accurist, 4 Catalysts (2 orange & 2 salt water silver and blue), and an Energy PT VI. Never had a single problem with any of them. I use the orange Catalysts and the Energy PT for cranking. I crank the snot out of those reels and have never had an issue with them.

I have been debating very hard myself on getting a Smoke. The Smoke reels are awesome! I have used my buddies Smoke several times and it is great! If you decide to buy one, you will be glad you did.

Well, you certainly haven't talked me out of it. I have heard such good things about the castability and smoothness of the smoke PT I will probably be picking up the slower ratio casting reel to use for cranking come february. Thanks for the input.

I have one Smoke PT that I have had for almost a year now and I can say I am honestly very impressed with it so far.

This past summer I purchased a Smoke reel and paired it up to a 7'1" St. Croix Rage rod. I had waited a while for the price to come down but just couldn't wait another season. Its hands down the best combo I've ever used. I fished with it pretty hard through the end of the summer & fall without a single problem. It's super light, comfortable, & durable. The drag system is smooth as silk & I can easily outcast anyone on the lake most days by at least 20-30 feet. I use it mostly for Senkos & texas rigged worms because of the casting accuracy and consistancy, but it really does well with anything I throw on the end of the line. It was well worth the investment & I plan to buy the spinning combo next season. My advice is go for it! You wont be disappointed. Good Luck!

I bought a smoke pt and a lews tournament pro in the spring of last year. They are comparable in weight and price. I like the smoke reel but I like the tournament pro better and plan on buying another one soon.

Hey wormy,can you give any thoughts on why you like the lews over the smoke? [better casting/flipping,smoother,etc..]

I have one of the two on my radar for this season.Trying to do some research,but it seems that anyone i talk to w/ either reel is very happy w/ their choice.

Lew's is smoother in my hands and the spool starts up faster. It also feels like it is built better. Both are very nice reels though.

The lews tournament pro cast a little further and smoother than the Smoke pt.

Huh, every Smoke I've handled has been rough, I mean ROUGH. I've not handled a single reel that I would have considered owning in that series. Particularly not for the $220 price tag; there are a lot of reels that you can spend that money on that have a better reputation and a better initial feel. I'm also not terribly impressed with the longevity of Quantum's newer reels. The Tour reels are quite nice by comparison, however. I've got a couple of the Tour reels on crank sticks and they're pretty reliable.
