Hey guys, im currently a Floridian (not native) and have been on this site for a bit in the southeast forum.  I am going to be moving to MN on may 10th.  I don't have an exact location yet but I am looking at places in Minnetonka, St Louis park, eden prairie that general area.  Ive got a little 10ft jon that I have been using for pond hopping down here and some of the smaller "big" lakes.  From reading through this page looks like im gonna be adapting to a new kind of fishing on the big lakes ( im originally from PA so I used to fish lakes there but not from a boat).  Im moving w/ my wife and we are basically going on an adventure.  We don't have any friends/relatives/family in the area so I figured id start here and see if anyone is in the general area where im gonna be and who loves to fish!   Ive been strictly fishing for LGM down here bc that's about all we have and they are pigs but I used to go for smallies back in PA.  So any tips, locations, people whod want to meet up and get their lines wet just let me know!

That's exciting man. I wish you luck, you can kiss your hopes of an 8 pounder goodbye but there are a million bass to be had. However, 100 fish days will be a reality and 3-4 pounders will be caught most outings. Just an incredible fishery and a heaven on earth. All that is missing are big bass. From everything i read, central MN seems to have the biggest bass. A lot of smaller ponds that would be worth your efforts launching your jon boat in there. If i got to choose a place in MN it would be central due to the higher numbers of 7's i hear caught there. But people are very hush about it so you will have to do some discovering. Keep us posted. I fish in fergus falls 2 weeks out of the year and will this year for nearly a month which i have never done. I am so excited. I'll drive in May 22nd, so i wish you luck, post your results.

I'm ready!  Boat is ready!  If everything clicks I'm in Wi next weekend.

Posted

I'm over in siren wi area and it is the toughest opener ive had up here. Saturday water temps were between 38-42 and we cought four fish all day. Sunday was a really nice day some lakes had 50 degree water and we didn't catch a single fish! We tried three lakes and on the last one I had one on a rat-l-trap and lost it near the boat.

I think this high pressure system is really hurting the fishing more than the water temps are.

All right MNsotans...Less than 26 hours away.  Sat look beautiful.  30% chance of TS for Sun and Mon though.  12 mph wind on Sun.  Have a feeling Tonka will be busy.  Havent finalized my weekend destinations.

looks like tomorrow is going to be great weather!  I think I'll be skipping Minnetonka, at least on Saturday, to some of the smaller lakes.  I have a feeling it's going to be CRAZY out there! Maybe Sunday or Monday we'll sneak back in to one of the bays

Boat and gear is going to be here June 1st (couldn't fit inside my pod during the move).  Excited to get out on some of these waters I have been driving around looking at for the past 2 weeks.  Going to be living in Plymouth on the northwest side of the twin cities.  Been scoping out some ramps and talking to a few guys about what they are catching.  My month of June is going to be fish fish fish.  Anyone interested in meeting up and showing the new guy around id appreciate it!

How did everyone do this weekend on the opener?  We did ok.  We caught about 25 with the largest being a 3lb'r. No real consistancy on where we were finding them though.  Is the water still to cold?  I think the lake we were on water temps were about 62-65.

opening weekend was pretty awesome, a little warm, but the fish were biting very well... fishing central mn lakes focusing on lakes with more stained and dirty water that heats up faster. the fish were much shallower than i had anticipated, and their willingness to hit topwater was also a little surprising.  Caught about 125 all large mouth in 2 days of fishing. the majority of the fish were 13-16 inches, but 11 were over 3 lbs with the largest being 21.25" and just a little over 5 lbs... it was a ton of fun, the fish were on very odd patterns, no jigs or texas rigs were effective at all, a few of the better fish came off square-bills, and wake baits... water temps were 64 in the morning and reaching 70 at its peak... water clarity about 2 ft. yellows were the top producer for me... thank God its open season again...

Didnt have the numbers (12 in all) but had some big girls.  They were shallow.  All texas rigged plastics.  Had 2 that were 19.5 inches +  One of these weighed in at 4.7lbs.  She was a hoss.  She was way back i the shallows right up near the bank.

Tried a jig for a few hrs (deep) and got just one strike but didnt land her...I swear my jigging technique sucks or I cant tell when there is a bite or something!

Eagle, What kind of set up are you using for your jigging?

Was using a 7 ft medium Vendetta rod w a 6:4 Patriarch.  Sufix Elite 14lb.

1/4 oz terminator jig w a baby paca craw jig.  pumpkin.

personally i would use at least a medium heavy to a heavy with a fast tip, not an extra fast tip, 7ft + rod with almost any jigging style. thats also my style too.thats what iget my best hooksets and can pick up on bites better.

Anyone know of any honey holes somewhere around SE MN? The farthest north I will go is usually somewhere around faribault but any suggestions?

I don't know how many we caught but it was quite a few (maybe 40 or so).  3 of us in the boat opening day.  3-4's a few 3's and a bunch of 14-16 inchers.  Lots on jerk baits in 5-8 ft, some on spinnerbaits and quite a bunch dead sticking senko's shallow.  Wind was blowing pretty good too later in day.

Didn't get out last weekend.  Not a big deal, weather was kind of crappy but should have went Saturday morning.  I screwed that up.  Alarm went of at 4:45 AM, shut it off and fell back asleep until 8:30!  d**n!  Said screw it, I'll go tomorrow.  Got up at 4:45 and lightning was flying and forecast looked bad.  Went back to bed again.

I'm off work next wed-fri.  Going to fish Chisago or N/S Center this weekend, buddy wants to fish Chisago on Wed, then my son and I are heading up north Thurs-Sun.  If I remember, I'll report back.

Cold front coming this weekend!  Yay!  Get to dig out the finesse gear again, too much fun!

So MN guys, what is the go to for bass in the fall season? Looking forward to visiting Leech lake, but accustomed to deep, cold lakes in Montana where Drop Shotting is a necessity. Any favorite techniques?

I should be fishing on the St. Croix River this weekend. With a cold front coming I will probably be using tubes, dropshots, and jigs to slowly fish for Smallies!

Been tough fishing today and last weekend.  Hate all of this high pressure especially with the number of weekends winding down!!

Almost smoked today but pulled a 16 incher in towards the end of my day.  Hows it going for you guys?  Whats working??

Kayakfisherman...what weight jig are you using?  Also what do you use as a trailer?  I have been going on two years and have not mastered fishing with a jig.  Admittedly it might be more about where I am tossing them as fishing deep water has never been easy for me.

Hi OperationEagle, I was using a black/blue 1/4 oz Terminator Pro series jig with a 4" Chigger Craw. I definitely have not mastered them yet either but they sure are lot of fun. Fishing deep water is never easy, that video I was pitching jigs under docks and fallen down trees, looking for bass in the shade on a bright sunny day. Thanks for the comment!
