Ebrahim Ali Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 hi Over the christmass weekend i caught a northern strain largemouth at my local dam.i couldnt weigh it as i didnt have a lipgrip scale with me and the scale i had would had to have been placed in the gills for a secure weighing. It was 60 cm(23,6 inches)long.measured from snout to tail. Quote

Ebrahim Ali Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 thanks and it was released.on that same day a south african pro was on the same water.he had a kickboat and i was fishing from the bank.after a 10 minute conversation with him i landed this guy.nothing like having a pro congratulate you on a catch. On a sad note some kid was fishing the same dam and cuaght 5 quality bass,he took them all for the pot even though its a catch and release dam. Quote

Super User Marty Posted January 5, 2012 Super User Posted January 5, 2012 On our New York State length-weight charts an "average" bass here of that length would weigh 7-14. Since the girth is considerably smaller I'd agree with the others who say about 5-6#. I've caught several bass that were more than 2# lighter than the average weight for their length. Quote

A scale can make you feel like a dink master, weights only mean something if you're getting paid for the fish. If I can pick up a fish it ain't worth weighing, and if I couldn't pick it up chances are I wouldn't have scale big enough to weigh it anyway PB is kinda meaningless to me as to the quality of my ability. I have no control of what's swimming below, the 2 pounder may strike faster than 7. Quote

james 14 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 A healthy 23" fish is around 7lbs. A spawning 23" fish could be close to 9 or more. A skinny one like that is probably around 5.5. I've had a few "big fish" weighed for tournaments that were in that size range come out to only 5.5lbs. They looked skinny like that one. Still a nice fish. Just cause he wasn't engourged enough to weigh 3lbs more doesn't mean he's any less of a fish...unless of course you were in a tourney Quote

Pete-K Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Nice fish, but sounds like someone needs to be taking more fish out. Being you say its full of small bass and that one looks like its been on weight watchers way to long. Way to many fish for what food they have in there. I have a small pond that has some 10+ bass in it and they are ok, but its full of bait. Then theres a small lake near here, that has the state record in it. But its been worked for trophy bass also. The dam i was fishing is a public ''dog walk'' that happens to have bass in it.its not managed and people take fish out willy nilly.its a catch and release dam but since no ones enforcing no one cares.too many people think with their stomachs.the fodder in the dam are blue kurper and vlei kurper and they are getting fished out as well.this is the biggest fish ive caught from this water and at the current state of it i dont think anybody will catch anything bigger any time soon.
